SCLERODERMA FAMILY REGISTRY & DNA REPOSITORY

Funded by: National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculosketetal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The researchers: The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston under the direction of Dr. Maureen D. Mayes and Dr. Arnett.

The objective of this research: The overall objective is to identify the genes that influence scleroderma.

(1) To determine the precise frequency that scleroderma occurs in more than 1 family member & to determine the frequency that other autoimmune diseases (like lupus) occur in families with at least one scleroderma case.

(2) To identify genes affecting the expression of SSc.

(3) To establish a repository of DNA and serum on 400 singleton families and 100 multiplex families. To also provide these samples as a resource to the scientific community to study scleroderma and related diseases.

It is not necessary to go to Houston to take part in this. The Participant will sign a medical release, through contact with the participant's medical facilities and physician.
