IOM ANNUAL FUNDInformation for Women about the Safety of Silicone Breast Implants

Last year an estimated 150,000 women obtained saline-filled breast implants for augmentation or reconstruction purposes, underscoring the need for information that will assist women in making informed decisions about whether the benefits of breast implants are worth the risks.

To meet this need, the IOM published a 30-page booklet for women who have or who are considering breast implants; it is a lay version of a previously released IOM technical report. Using accessible language, the booklet concisely reviews the evidence on the implants’ associations with health problems, offers answers to the most common questions about breast implant safety, and addresses the controversies around silicone breast implants. Approximately 25,000 copies have been distributed through collaborations with the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Y-me National Breast Cancer Association, and the Dow Corning and Mentor corporations.

Both the 30-page booklet and the technical report are available on-line.
