Think Tank for Women & Families Welcomes New Director of Policy and Communications and Senior Research Associate

Washington, D.C.—The National Center for Policy Research (CPR) for Women & Families is gearing up for 2003 with the help of two new senior staff, Cathleen Witter and Cattaneo, Ph.D.

Cathleen Witter is CPR’s new Director of Policy and Communications, responsible for CPR’s media and policy strategy. One of Ms. Witter’s key responsibilities will be to tackle CPR’s new public education campaign on surgical options for breast cancer patients. “Many women have no idea that there are alternatives to a mastectomy that are just as safe and less debilitating in the long-term. I look forward to working with the media to improve women's access to information on this issue and many other health topics that are just as important to women and families,” says Ms. Witter. Before joining CPR, Ms. Witter was the Communications Associate for Catholics for a Free Choice, where she worked on health care and AIDS prevention issues, and at the Global TeleExchange, where she managed client relations.

Cattaneo, Ph.D., joins CPR as a Senior Policy Research Associate. Dr. Cattaneo is responsible for evaluating Junior League volunteer projects in six states, which are aimed at improving services for children who have witnessed domestic violence. Prior to joining CPR, Dr. Cattaneo worked at the Urban Institute, where she evaluated federally-funded domestic violence projects throughout the country. In addition to her work with CPR, Dr. Cattaneo is currently consulting with the District of Columbia's U.S. Attorney's Office to evaluate a pilot program that collaborates with other local agencies to respond to the most serious domestic violence cases. “Children who have witnessed violence against their mothers can be terribly traumatized, even if they are not physically hurt,” explains Cattaneo. “Our goal is to determine how volunteers can make a difference in the lives of these children in their communities” says Dr. Cattaneo.

CPR, a Washington-based nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank founded in 1999 by President Zuckerman, focuses on health policy issues. CPR provides information that can be used to improve the lives of women and families by gathering and synthesizing research information and explaining its implications to consumers, the media, policy makers and opinion leaders. Says Dr. Zuckerman, “Dr. Cattaneo and Ms. Witter have the expertise and dedication that will help us achieve our mission of improving the health and well-being of women, children, and families across the country.”
