Subject: POST: More on the reviewer of the book review from JAMA

Subj: More on the reviewer of the book review from JAMA Date: 12/3/2002 8:14:07 PM Eastern Standard Time From: ahotz@... Regarding the book entitled Whiplash and Other Useful Illnessesthat was reviewed by E. Ehrlich, MDAs you all probably already know, toxin induced injury cantrigger fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome and otherchronic illnesses--but what you may not know is that peoplelike Dr. Ehrlich, are part of a well organized pro-industrymachine, to undermine people like you and me.Dr. Ehrlich is an industry shill who serves as an advisor toThe American Council on Science and Health -- an industryfront organization. See his name as item number 12 at:http://www.healthfactsandfears.com/contributors.htmlLook at some of the names of books and articles that this ASCHadvisor group is writing about and you will get a gist of whatthey are all about. It is ASCH's and Ehrlich's job, to ridicule and undermine all claimsof toxin induced illness. His lead-in is about whiplash -- to promptthe reader to fall into a mental state that sees persons who sue becauseof these injuries-- as predatory, hysterical, crazy, etc.ACSH behaves like a public relations firm for the chemical/pharmaceuticalindustry and regularly attacks alternative medicine products and practices.ACSH's job is to continually twist the truth and paint all environmentalistsas misguided fanatics. Its officers and spokespersons say outrageous things like DDT is"safe." ACSH's main financial support of course, comes from thechemical/pharmaceutical industry (see list at end of this message),and other companies that use and/or sell synthetic chemical productsincluding the processed food industry.ACSH pumps out pro-industry “scientific†opinions on avariety of products and practices, but only by digging can youfind that they are funded by the same industriesthat they promote. ASCH’s modus operandi is to conductbogus, incomplete analyses of the medical and scientificliterature and to promote their corporate contributors byputting out a barrage of press releases and letters to theeditors of news outlets all over the country.ASCH has received scathing criticism for its deceptivetactics: “Forefront of Science or Just a Front?â€. (SeeConsumer Reports, May 1994; Megalli and Friedman,“Masks of Deceptionâ€, p. 3; Bleifuss, “Science in thePrivate Interest: Hiring Flacks to Attack the Factsâ€,PR Watch, Vol. 2, No. 1 (1995) , p. 11; Anon., “PublicInterest Pretendersâ€, Consumer Reports, Vol. 59, No. 5 (1994),p. 319; Anon., “Misguided Health Priorities Could Affect Economyâ€,International Insurance Monitor, Vol. 41, No. 6 (1987) ; Anon.,“Dr blasts US health care prioritiesâ€, Cash Flow, Vol. 91, No. 47 (1987).Its former Vice President, Barrett, M.D. (retired psychiatrist)is still closely associated with ACSH and is listed as an ASCH associateand science advisor. Barrett is the founder of Quackwatch. Barrett’stactics, along with his associates, are outrageous, brutal, and sick:http://www.quackpotwatch.org/default.htmhttp://www.internetwks.com/pauling/quack.htmlhttp://www.quackpotwatch.org/default.htmAnother "Quackwatch" player is the National CouncilAgainst Health Fraud's Executive Director, T.Jarvis, PhD. He is also a close associate of ACSH.You should know by now that ACSH does not invite anyone onthe board or into its membership if they are honestly pursuinglinks between toxic chemicals and neurological damage and disease.RE ACSH funding and conflicts of interest. The most complete supporting material comes from Center for Science inthe Public Interest -- a watchdog group that has an excellent web siteshowing lists of scientists, non-profits, universities -- etc.,with ties to industry -- including ACSH --at:http://www.cspinet.org/integrity/corp_funding.htmlFUNDER LIST -- AMERICAN COUNCIL ON SCIENCE AND HEALTHThe following groups have contributed to ACSH in the past according toACSH’s 1991 annual report.
