PATIENTS WANTED FOR CLINICAL TRIALS AT UT SOUTHWESTERN DALLAS – April 15, 2003 – Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas are seeking patients to participate in medical studies on bone loss, osteoporosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Participants will be compensated according to the specific requirements of each study. All trials are approved by UT Southwestern's Institutional Review Board, which reviews them for benefits, risks, side effects and informed consent. Bone loss Men and women 65 years of age and older without osteoporosis are needed for a UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas study on bone loss. The 27-week study will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a medication designed to prevent age-related bone loss. Osteoporosis UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas researchers are seeking women to participate in a 54-month study to compare the effectiveness of two osteoporosis drugs. Participants must be female, 55 years or older, and have osteoporosis. The study seeks women who are not taking estrogen or prescription medication for the bone-thinning disease. Pulmonary disease Patients are being sought for a clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of an investigational medicine for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas need people who are at least 40 years old, diagnosed with COPD, currently smoke or have a history of heavy smoking, and have no other major health problems. Subjects will receive study-related medication, an electrocardiogram and pulmonary tests at no charge and will be compensated for time spent participating.
