PATIENTS WANTED FOR CLINICAL TRIALS AT UT SOUTHWESTERN

DALLAS – March 21, 2003 – Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center at

Dallas are seeking patients to participate in medical studies on Alzheimer's

disease, alcohol abuse and type 2 diabetes. Participants will be compensated

according to the specific requirements of each study. All trials are

approved by UT Southwestern's Institutional Review Board, which reviews them

for benefits, risks, side effects and informed consent.

Alzheimer's

UT Southwestern researchers are conducting a study of vitamin therapy to

reduce the blood level of an amino acid called homocysteine. Homocysteine

levels tend to be higher in people who have Alzheimer's disease. Volunteers

must be 60 years of age or older but do not have to suffer from Alzheimer's

or exhibit signs of cognitive impairment. Participants will take a low-dose

B-vitamin supplement during the first part of the study, then take higher

doses during the study's final stages. The study includes some memory and

thinking tests. Participants will be financially compensated and receive

vitamins as part of the study. For more information, call 214-648-7459.

Alcohol

UT Southwestern scientists are seeking women with alcohol problems to

participate in an inpatient research study. The study is designed to learn

more about the biology of alcoholism. Eligible participants must be between

30 and 50 years of age, be in reasonably good health, not be overweight, and

not be taking oral contraceptives. Eligible subjects will receive six to

eight weeks of residential treatment for alcohol problems. Volunteers also

will receive physical exams, EKG and blood tests, and financial compensation

for their participation. For more information, call 214-857-0830.

Type 2 diabetes

UT Southwestern is looking for volunteers who are not diabetic but have at

least three of the following risk factors: strong family history of

diabetes; 30 to 65 years of age; overweight; high blood pressure; high

cholesterol; African-American, Native American or Hispanic ancestry; or

diabetes during pregnancy. The study examines the exact mechanism of a Food

and Drug Administration-approved drug and its effects on the heart.

Participants will be chosen at random to take the drug or a placebo for

eight months. Monetary compensation will be provided. For more information,

call 214-648-5432.
