IMPLANT SYNDROME

by Carolyn Gorman

The 20th century has seen many advances in medicine, industry, transportation, agriculture, and architecture. The many new chemicals and synthetically created products together with climate controlled airtight buildings has bombarded mankind with exposure to myriad chemical compounds. These compounds can affect the vascular, immune, endocrine and nervous system of individuals causing numerous complaints.

The main routes of exposure to these chemicals are through inhalation, ingestion, and through absorption by the skin, the body's largest organ. In most instances the chemical enzyme detoxification system metabolizes the chemicals, rendering them harmless. They are then eliminated by bowel, kidney or through the sweat glands. We maintain good health and increase our body's ability to combat viruses, bacteria, and damage by chemical compounds with proper diet, fluid intake, and through supplementation with vitamin, minerals, and antioxidants. However, sometimes the exposure is too great, or the body has been weakened by a recent surgery or infection. When this happens, the weakened immune or chemical detoxification system is overwhelmed. The chemicals circulate in the blood and can become stored in fatty tissue. The virus or bacteria can cause infection which may necessitate the use of medication. In the case of implant recipients, the chemicals can be absorbed into adjacent tissue where they remain. They can also circulate in the blood or in the lymphatic system. Their final destination can be lymph nodes, vital organs or body cavities.

These implants can be in many locations in the body serving many functions. Some implants save mobility and some save sight. Some make chewing possible, others serve cosmetic purposes. They can be fashioned from metal, silicon, Teflon, Dacron, acrylic, polyethylene, polypropylene, polytetraflorethalene and metal. In hernia surgery, a polypropylene or polyethylene mesh is often used. Hip, knee and joint replacements can contain silicone, stainless steel and titanium units. There may be metal rods inserted into broken bones. Stainless steel posts can be placed into the jawbone for attachment of teeth. Some Teflon and silicon implants can be in the jaw, chin, cheeks or breasts. Eyeballs can be fashioned of acrylic or other plastic. Cataract surgery with lens replacement involves a lens of acrylic, polymethylmethacrylate or silicone. Heart valves are steel and silicone. Vascular grafts can be teflon, Dacron, polypropylene, etc.

Breast implants are usually silicon gel or saline encapsulated in plastic envelopes. Silicon breast implants have leached silicon into the body with grave consequences. Urethane coated implants have allowed this chemical to become part of body tissue. Saline implants in silicon envelopes can still create sensitivities and illnesses due to the effect of this foreign material in the body. Any of these well-intended, sometimes necessary implants can be a source of symptoms and illness. Recipients can even develop antibodies to them further complicating the disease processes.

The Environmental Health Center - Dallas welcomes this opportunity to acquaint you with its program for the evaluation and treatment of persons who may be suffering from the implant syndrome. This syndrome can be a result of any synthetically created implant material…..silicone, acrylic, Teflon, etc. The chemical exposure of those with implants can create sensitivities to substances such as cleaning products, laundry detergents, perfumes, cigarette smoke, and paints. The symptoms produced can include fatigue, allergies, muscle pain and depression. Complaints and symptoms can be many and diversified leaving you and your physician frustrated in the many attempts to treat your disease process and improve your health.

Simple biochemistry is the basis of the treatment given at this facility. It is an established treatment modality which uses a diversified and holistic approach to management of the disease process. This approach uses natural substances to return the body to a balanced state. It stresses clean air, food, water, elimination of tissue-stored chemicals, avoidance of excessive chemical and electromagnetic exposure and proper nutritional management.

Since we spend 90% of our time indoors, the indoor environment is extremely important. The use of products containing petroleum, chlorine or ammonia, ketones or acetones can add contaminants to the air which can damage the central nervous system, liver, kidneys, heart and mucous membranes. Small changes can reap great rewards. These changes exceed the creation of an indoor environment free of cigarette smoke or pesticides. It includes the selection of natural or less chemically contaminated personal care items, paints, caulks, grouts, and cleaning solutions and powders. These products which assist in the maintenance of homeostasis or good health are found at the American Environmental Health Foundation (AEHF) or online www.aehf.com. The selection and placement of the heat source can be very important. Care must be taken to insure that the climate control system functions properly, has no leaks and does not expose you to gas, oil or carbon monoxide. Be knowledgeable in the selection of your flooring. Carpeting and wood flooring do vary and safer selections are available. Become familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets which can inform you of chemical content, and the health effects of them.

What we eat is extremely important as nutrition is a building block of good health. In our fast paced, time crunched world, fast foods are viewed as timely and convenient, but they can be low in nutritional value and high in fat content, bisulfites and other preservatives. Conventionally grown and processed foods can contain metals, pesticides, artificial flavoring and preservatives. Naturally grown or organically grown food should be considered a viable option. Their availability is increasing and many supermarkets are now carrying organic food. Also, conventionally grown food can be deficient in vitamins and minerals. The soil in which they are grown may be sterile having been depleted by the use of pesticides, fungicides or herbicides. The less chemically contaminated food usually contains more nutrients as it may be grown in soil and under conditions which increase plant nutrient content.

Another aspect of proper nutrition is the preparation of your food. Cooking utensils can add undesirable chemical and metal contaminants to your food. Therefore, it is suggested that you cook your food in glass, iron or stainless steel. Steaming, broiling or baking is the recommended method of food preparation. These methods better preserve the nutritional content of the food.

We should consume at least 64 ounces of water a day, but what else are we drinking - chlorine, fluoride, toluene, styrene, trichlorethylene? The daily consumption of these substances through drinking and showering can pose a significant health risk. Plastic bottled water can allow chemical compounds to leach into the drinking water. Glass bottled or a charcoal filtration system can provide a water source which is free of harmful chemicals. It is important to know your water content in order to make the proper choice of water filtration systems. This is especially important if you obtain your water from a well. Water Testing Kits are available at AEHF. Therefore, carefully consider your water source.

Living in today's world exposes one to xenobiotics in air, food and water. These exposures can be the factor which overloads the body's detoxification and immune systems thus affecting vital organ functioning. For those whose health problem is complicated by exposure to implant materials, the effect could be life threatening. If laboratory testing reveals that chemicals are circulating in the blood, or metals or foreign substances are present in organs and fatty tissue, the heat chamber chemical depuration program of EHC-D could possibly be beneficial. This program is designed to reduce the toxic body burden thereby achieving a reduction in symptom response.

These exposures combined with exposure to implanted material, increases the need for oral and IV supplementation of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These are crucial to proper organ functioning and maintaining biochemical reactions and nerve transmissions and in protecting the body from free radical damage. EHC-D has a comprehensive testing and treatment program combining the axions of proper nutrition with those of individual patient needs

These suggestions are given to minimize chemical exposure. Chemicals are absorbed by your body through the food you eat, the air you breathe, the water you drink, the products applied to the surface of your skin, those implanted into the body and the chemicals to which your skin comes in contact. Protecting your body and its functioning with a more natural and ecological lifestyle decreases your health risk and increases your chances for optimal health. The EHC-D stresses this through the specially designed treatment facility. We minimize the use of medications and maximize the use of natural substances in our treatment of health problems. Our goal is to reduce the total body load and maximize the natural healing power of the body to allow it to return to a state of balance or homeostasis.

Following is a list of resources with which to begin your creation of a less-toxic environment. Hopefully they will provide you with a better understanding of the effects of chemicals on the disease process. We sincerely hope the use of less-toxic alternatives combined with proper nutrition will maximize the healing power of your body and move you forward in your journey toward optimal health.
