It would be nice to lose the "love handles" around the waist and the"saddle bags" on the hips as well, said the hundreds of women andhandful of men who lined up to be interviewed for ABC's "ExtremeMakeover" television show.Although the casting call wasn't until 3 p.m., some hopefuls were inthe parking lot at the Elks Lodge by 1 a.m., said Marla Brodsky, theprogram's casting coordinator.Brodsky and Dawn Stroupe, the show's coordinating producer, vowed tostay until everyone had the chance to say why he or she needs cosmeticwork. The makeover has to be exactly what the show's name says – extreme,Stroupe said. She wasn't interested in someone who simply wantedstraighter teeth, although dental work often is part of the overallmakeover, which can cost, Stroupe said, between $50,000 and $100,000 aperson.Ultimately, 20 people will get their chance at looking different aftersix months during the show's second season, starting in the fall. Theywill be chosen from thousands of applicants Brodsky and Stroupe willinterview, here and in Philadelphia, Houston and Seattle. The show came to Oceanside, Stroupe said, because they areparticularly looking for military wives who want to improve theirappearance for their husbands' return. One woman, whose husband is a Marine on deploymen t, said she wants tolook younger and more fit for him. And, noting that the producers alsoare looking for mother-daughter combinations, she showed her24-year-old daughter's application for breast implants, tummy tucks, anose job and laser surgery on her eyes.Stroupe also was looking for men, whom she said are reluctantparticipants. "Men believe they're not supposed to do something likethis," she said.Jim of Big Bear wasn't the least shy, though. He wants a nose reduction and a bump taken off his nose, a chinimplant or his jaw broken and brought forward, liposuction to hisstomach, upper and lower eyelid reduction and a chest implant to makehim look more muscular."I can list 10 more things, at least," said. Stroupe told those waiting to be interviewed to scrub off their makeupand pull their hair back because they won't be chosen if they are toopretty. And that's what the appl icants were calling each other. While "Twiggy," a 54-year-old woman from Hillcrest, said she wantedthe insults about her small bra size to stop, she praised thebeautiful face of Camarena, 36, of Vista, who was waiting atthe same table. But Camarena, after four children, three delivered by Caesareansection, said, "My stomach to me is like a disease."She's taken out all the mirrors from her home, except one over thebathroom basin. If a candidate really impressed Brodsky or Stroupe, like Giermann of Oceanside, they would single that person out. Giermann'spersonality and career aspirations attracted Brodsky's attention.Otherwise, the contestants were told their applications would be kepton file but not to expect a call before the first show airs inSeptember.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lola Sherman: (760) 476-8241; lola.sherman@...
