Bottled Water and Water Filters: Hype or Healthy?

You're invited to our next Fourth Fridays lunch

on Friday, July 25

It's summer, and drinking water seems like a healthy choice. But is it? Sales of bottled water have sky-rocketed in the past decade due to public perception that it is purer and safer than tap water. Meanwhile, Americans have spent more than $1 billion on home water-filtering gizmos. And, millions of Americans rely on good, old-fashioned tap water. How safe is our tap water, do water filters make it safer, and are there risks as well as benefits to bottled water?

Policy questions include: What are the regulations for bottled water in the U.S. and are they adequate to assure consumers of purity or safety? How rigorous are the testing and purity standards for bottled water compared to those for tap water?

According to government and industry estimates, about one-fourth of bottled water is actually bottled tap water. And some scientists are concerned about the safety of the plastics used. Are you paying a premium to drink tap water in a plastic bottle, when the bottle itself may contain harmful chemicals?

Come and hear the experts discuss what the research really shows about bottled water and tap water safety. Learn about the policy issues and what you can do as a consumer to make the best choices for yourself and your family.

CPR's Fourth Fridays lunch series is free. Just tell us you're coming and we'll save you a sandwich or salad and make sure you have a place to sit. Our goal is to provide useful information and interesting discussions among leaders from across the spectrum of life in the Washington, DC area, in an informal setting.

The National Center for Policy Research (CPR) for Women & Families provides unbiased health information by translating medical and scientific research into plain English that everyone can understand. We don't take money from companies that make the products that we analyze, and we provide our information for free to everyone. On the fourth Friday of every month (except for holiday weekends), CPR hosts an informal lunch on a topic that provides "news you can use."

Thanks to Potbelly Sandwich Works for providing the lunch

and for providing the refreshments and conference room!
