, Thank you so much for this.  I hate this drug.  It scares me to death.  I have never taken one or been prescribed one, I just know what they do.  Hugs,Teri

Hi Folks,

I am feeling compelled to chime in here. Oxycontin was originally to be used for cancer pain. It should be the very LAST resort. Diet, exercise, OTC anti inflammatory meds like ibuprofen or even prescription strength should be used first. If NOTHING works and you are looking for 24 hour relief maybe a fentanyl patch would be more appropriate.

We have a local doctor who was selling prescriptions for Oxycontin- SHE was recently arrested (sold to an undercover cop) but guess what, she is innocent until proven guilty and is still practicing medicine (just not allowed to write scripts for narcotics) This is the same Doc who treated my stepdaughters Mom who WAS horribly addicted to Oxycontin and overdosed several years ago. So, yes, you have to be VERY careful and decide wisely about taking this medication. I believe it is over prescribed. I am an RN and work as a Visiting Nurse, so I see it all. Oxycontin is to be taken twice daily (every 12 hours) as it is a long- acting drug.

I am sure everyone knows about oxycontin on the streets, its an epidemic- it is crushed - enteric coating removed thereby releasing the full effect of the drug all at once. Just like heroin this way and very difficult for them to get off of it due to effect on the brain. Keep your oxycontin/ narcotics safely away, so anyone at risk to abuse it can't get it.

Don you are always giving great advise, I hope you heed the advice others are giving you.

Hugs,

Pain-free thank you ASEA!

TeriI have no doubt that they are extremely addictive. It's a lot of the reason I'm glad that I don't have to ask for anything like it. I know that you've taken them for a week or two, your hooked. What I was really trying to put across was that Don has been on these Oxy's for a long time already. If that is what works to maintain a comfortable life, it is what it is. No use worrying about addiction at this stage. My fear is that I would ask for something like that, away to early and then when the pain really gets intense, the Oxy's won't work unless they keep me highly doped. The likelihood that my liver is going to go down hill is very high! So, hopefully I can continue with these muscle relaxants

until I need something stronger. My brother already takes morphine pills and I have a friend that takes the Oxy's.Gloria

Unfortunately Oxy's are a very easy addiction. They truly are heroin in pill form. The fewer of these that Don takes the better. Those things scare the crap out of me. On Fri, Feb 25, 2011 at 1:18 AM, Gloria <gadamscan@...> wrote:

Oh, it's not easy to get pain relievers here either. It has to be long term incapacity from pain, at the very least. I wouldn't know enough about the Oxy's and whether they should be taken on a schedule!! Just worry about Don when he takes so many meds and trying to get him to be regular.

But, just about any or everything is filtered through our livers. Then, the things that could be dangerous to a sick liver today, will suddenly be absolutely wonderful the next. I guess I need to look up a whole lot more, what really can cause harm to the liver.

You both know that I had an addiction to OTC Acetaminophen. But, that does not say

that I "have" to stay totally away from them. They were recommended for any headaches while on tx. I'm very aware to take them so little that it would be hard to find the bottle.

Thanks I am actually saving the Oxy addiction until the cancer comes back. That's what I meant in my last post.Yup, well aware of the street addiction to Oxy's as well. Because I don't and never have lived in that kind of addition, I just can't figure out where these folks get the pills. Nope, don't want to know either.
