I am right there with you Diane...  We took our daughter to start college back in August.... she is going to DePauw University in Indiana, and we stopped for breakfast in Greencastle, IN.  As we walked in the hostess asked us " Smoking or Non Smoking? "  I about died...  I told my hubs I wanted to move there!  Little hick town and they don't care!  I loved it.

I remember when you could smoke on airplanes....  and with as freaked out as I get when I fly, I really need to smoke!  My blu cig has gotten me thru the last few plane trips beautifully.  I love it.  Plus it's black with a blue tip and it looks so cool!

I ended up with the fifty-ones but was thinking about trying the blues. Originally the fifty ones were not working well but they were an older model and the new ones are much better. As a smoker I still hate the smell in the house and on my clothes and when I have my granddaughter they come in real handy. The best was when my husband had his biopsy , after waiting for a couple of hours I was getting desperate for a hit, it was great to just go into the bathroom and get that nicotine. Now so many hopitals are no smoking on the whole campus! I have to say that I feel the whole no smoking thing has gone way too far, now NY saying you can't smoke in the parks, give me a break.

Diane,You know, I signed a one year lease the house I am in...  the intention here is to buy.  Do you know that after I signed the lease and moved in I saw that there was a clause added where I couldn't smoke in the house.  Really?  I am paying a lot of money to be in this house and they can tell me I can't smoke in it?  WTF?

Yes, you can bring an e-cig on a plane and use it freely.  The flight attendants are well aware of them, as a matter of fact, they use them too!  I'm sure you are beyond terrified about your husband starting treatment....  do me a big favor though.. try not to let him know that... somebody has to keep the appearance of " Everything is going to be just fine... "  and it's going to be hard for that person to be him.

There is absolutely nothing and everything to be afraid of...  how's that for a wishy washy comment!  Right now you are afraid of the unknown.  He hasn't started yet and until he takes that first shot, you won't know how he's going to react.  Some people get thru this with very few side effects if any.  Steve, who is a mod on this group, he went thru treatment and worked the entire time.  He had some side effects but he wasn't side lined by them.  I, on the other hand, was completely side lined.  Every person reacts differently.  There are people here who have had a really difficult time and some that have had their weeks just change with side effects.  Sometimes a few sometimes none sometimes all of them.  We never know.  Everyone has their own walk with treatment.  Even the drug companies will tell you that there is no prediction because everyone has a different experience.

Now, for the advice...  The best thing you can do to help your husband is to get prepared for this fiasco!  First off I want you to keep a positive attitude no matter what when you are around him.  If you want to totally freak out, come on here and do it.   He very well may be sick and if he's trying to still be the one holding the family together it can be tough.  If you need an outlet, which you will.. find a friend that you can talk to.. meet for coffee for a half hour... something.  You will need to blow steam off.  They say this can be harder on the care giver than on the patient...  Not sure how true that is...  I know it about killed my husband to watch what I was going thru.  He felt pretty helpless.  I also know how hard it was on me so...  it was probably pretty even difficulty wise but his torment was mental and mine was mental and physical.

Enough of that...  he's going to need to drink a lot of water to flush the meds thru his system..  The more water he drinks the easier the side effects are.  He should be drinking a gallon + of water in addition to what he would normally drink.  These meds dehydrate you.  You have to replace the fluids in your system.  Gatorade works too... as does herbal tea.  He may find it difficult to eat...  food tastes different.  There is also the metal taste that we get in our mouth.. really bad.  To get rid of the metal taste try pickles or Junior Mints.  Some folks here have put Junior Mints in the freezer and popped one to get rid of the taste.  I used dark chocolate.  Not a big mint fan.  Food... that's a rough one.. whatever he can tolerate, you're going to see he's going to stray towards really bland stuff.  AS this stuff happens, just pop on here and we will walk you thru it.

Educate yourself now.  Read all the booklets the doc gives you with the meds.  They tell you what to expect.  And they are accurate. As for replying to a post... on the post you want to reply to, from your e-mails, just reply as you would to a normal e-mail...  if there is more than one post on the e-mail (sometimes we leave a string of them... ticks some people off)  remove all but the one you are responding to (cut and paste, but just cut...) If the subject is changing please change the subject line.  It's a lot and we all forget sometimes so just give it a good college try!  Hope that answers that question!

Let me know if you need anything...  I am here and more than willing to help....Hugs,TeriOn Sat, Feb 26, 2011 at 9:50 AM, dianedellicarpini <dellcar9@...> wrote:

Regarding smoking, it is awful how much they have gone after smokers and most of it is not based on science just pc bull. I think I would also almost pass out if I heard smoking or non smoking, sure would be nice. Also Can you take ecigs on the plane and not get hasseled? Another thing Iam really not quite sure of where to put a post and after reading what happened I sure don't want to insult anyone.

Don posted how scared he was of biopsy, I must confess that I am terrified of my husband going into treatment. And Don, my husband had no problem with the biopsy other than a little sorenes at the site.

Diane,I totally understand your fears.  I also know that you are going to make yourself sick worrying about the unknown right now.  When you start to get nervous about all of this stop what you are doing and take a deep breath.  Then do it again.  We use that trick here all the time for folks on treatment. Just breathe...    There is no reason to worry about what " might " happen.  That's wasted energy.  You need your energy.

About the side effects that go on after treatment...  not everyone has those.  A few of us do.  I do. But here is the thing.  I had a choice.  Either I went on treatment when I did or I'd have been on the liver transplant list within 6 months..  and I'd have died waiting there.  I had no idea about lasting side effects when I started treatment.  I knew about the possible side effects during treatment and I had every one of them.  But, I had a choice....  treatment and live or not.  I choose life.  I'm sure your husband is thinking the same thing.  That's the page you need to be on...  the life page.  Granted, more people die with hep c than from it but hep c can make you pretty damn sick and end stage liver disease just isn't pretty.

You and your husband are going to be just fine...  and just so you know, what you're feeling right now... we all went thru that too.  It's pretty normal.  Just hang in there, keep your chin up and stay positive....  we are right here for whatever issues come up.  Promise.

Hi, Thanks for the advice, I have not told my husband how I feel. I don't want to lay that on him. What scares me is when I read about side effects that go on after treatment. I did buy several books when we found out about hep c. One of them is about western medicine and alternative medicine. Pharmaceuticals scare me and it is because it puts you on a never ending take one get side effects take another for the side effects.

Thanks for the info on the e-cigs and planes. My daughter moved to the west coast and I was thinking about visiting{hate to fly} but could not imagine the flight without a cig. She does come to see us so that's a good thing.

About treatment, I did get in touch with naturapathic md and was told it was best to do the treatment because it is the only possible cure at this time. He did say that there were natural substances to help with side effects.

You are right, now I am afraid because we don't know how he will react. I suppose we will know a lot more in april, that's when we see the hep doctor.

Just have to say that there are a lot of brave souls on this site.

DianeUnfortunately, you will not be finding out in April about any side effects. It is so individual that you will only know when he is finally on tx.Obviously, both of you must know something about the damage the Hep has done to his liver. I say that because of the Naturath. Do you know what geno type and what level a biopsy put him at??Gloria
