Guest guest
I know you didn't address your questions to me, but I wanted to add my 2-cents' worth...a resounding YES to both questions!

TD absolutely CAN run in families, though it doesn't always do so. My father had Graves Disease (extreme hyPERthyroidism), one of his sisters is hypo, and so is one of her daughters. One of the other causes - or in many cases, what are called " triggers " - are environmental in nature. Such as radiation exposure and - yes - smoking. After I quit my 15-year smoking habit, TD hit me (as I like to say) " like a runaway train " ! Here's how: smoking poses a " double-whammy " effect on the thyroid. The smoke itself can DAMAGE the thyroid, causing malfunction...and the nicotine in the cigarettes create a " masking " effect that will actually HIDE THE DAMAGE, for as long as you smoke. Then when you quit smoking - BOOM! - the damage is unmasked, and it hits you big time! I had long suspected that I " triggered " my thyroid problem by quitting, but after a lot of investigation over the internet I have come to the conclusion that my suspicions were a little off. Quitting didn't cause my TD; smoking ITSELF caused it. Quitting only showed me how much damage I'd done, in 15 years of smoking cigarettes! Hope this info helps!

BTW, my experiences can now be seen - at length - on my homepage, " JWT's Thyroid Journal " at: http://members.delphi.com/jwthompson
It's long, but maybe some will be able to benefit from my experiences!

(((((bunches-o-hugs!)))))... Guest guest
Thank you for sharing your experiences with me I never knew that smoking was even more harming on the thyroid, I am all new to this disease and I am glad that you answered my message. The more information for me the better!

I will diffently check out your web page, I am also intrested in the genetic aspect of this disease, so maybe I could prevent my children from doing some of the things I did wrong in my life so maybe they won't get this!

Thank you again,
sunflower_413. Guest guest
I just heard about nicotine patches on the news. The patches are not addictive and they're useful for various mental complaints such as Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Schizophrenia, and Attention Deficit Disorder. Might help our brain fog? They didn't mention gum, but I think that might be addictive because it delivers the nicotine in one hit. It's the rush of nicotine from smoking that's addictive. The patches deliver a slow, even dose. esp wrote: > From: esp <esp@...> > > Barb, > > Dr Bell told me I'd feel much better if I took up smoking but he also > told me that wasn't a good idea!......I wondered about trying the > nicotine gum myself last year and someone leant me some.....but in the > end i didn't try it as while its a good thing for someone going off > smoking its not a good thing for us to get involved with an addictive > drug.....I tried taking a dopamine drug but it didn't help.... > > From: kb46@... > Subject: Re: nicotine > > The last few days there have been numerous news pieces on nicotine > research. > Supposedly nicotine helps modulate dopamine which affects Parkinson's > disease > sufferers, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's. > > I felt somewhat better taking Amantadine which helps with dopamine as > well as > being an antiviral. Congrats, , I don't remember the date when I quit (pipe and cigars), but it was in the late 80s. Once in a while, I smell some good pipe tobacco, and get tempted, but I'm able to resist. It's been about 30 years since I had a cigarette. I know my sister was still living home, and she got married when I was 11, so I must have been about 10 when I quit those. I dont smoke so can't really offer any personal experience but I've heard researching lung cancer online with all the gory pics can help. Really! I know someone who did this and it made it much easier for her to quit. Its similiar to people who say they witnessed a loved one pass away from a smoking related illness and suddenly found the resolve to quit cold turkey. Quitting really would go hand in hand with your whole new approach to healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. Good luck! Guest guest
Dana, Hi fellow bigmouth girlfriend! If I didn't know I was older than you, I would think we were twins separated at birth, LOL! I *hate* that I smoke, I think it would be the biggest accomplishment I ever made in my life if I could quit. Like a young jerk, I started at 11 - I looked older than I was and hung out with the older kids. I'm so sorry that you're having problems, hope you can get your appt. moved up. I think the acupuncturist can help you, even if it's with the side effects of the protocol, and maybe smoking. Hmmmm........will have to send my own e-mail to hepatitis activist. My husband is in Salt Lake City this weekend for work and I have my darling granddaughter here with me. We are scrapbooking our hearts out, and I'm having so much fun with her that I won't have much time, but I will make some! It's so much fun, seeing life through a 9-year old's eyes, and she understands when I have to take a nap. To your daughter, I say, you go, girl! If she wants to be an attorney bad enough, she'll make her own path. No one was more stunned than me that my son turned into a rock'n'roller and a salesman with his anxieties and bouts of depression. He saw a lady get killed last year, 2 weeks before Sept. 11, and then Sept. 11 happened. He has been worse and better than he ever has been. The time of the trial is coming up and he is a key witness, his acid reflux is getting him crazy. Marilyn Re: Smoking Can you believe I quit for 3 years and started again. Divorce and heartbreak.
