Well Betty, even though Cheryl is not a newcomer to our group, I still want to respond to something you said.Truly, truly and with every fibre of my body, I believe that absolutely every Dr. be given the correct information and get their eyes opened to this epidemic. However, that is not going to happen until the Health Departments are ready to get their collective heads out of there asses. Which then means that the governments have to do the same!! Already Hep C is at least 4 times what the HIV epidemic has been. By the way, I'm Canadian and the test is absolutely free!! No excuse right?? However, the patient would have

to be sent for the test and the Drs don't do that.If memory serves me, didn't we have some kind of immunization card when we were kids?? That way the schools knew who had been immunized for what. Well, maybe they should do that for Hep C??? Hell, up here they provide safe sites, rigs and pipe paraphernalia. I just can not understand why they don't set up lab days for everyone to get tested!!!Whoops - on my soap box againGloria

Hi Cheryl,

I am Betty, also from Md. 51 yrs old. I am sorry to hear that your daughter also has hcv. Its one thing for me myself but I cant imagine your child too. I am also Geno 1a. Will your daughter be going to Hopkins at Greenspring Station or Downtown. I ask because Greenspring has the best people working for them. They aren't judgemental. That was my experience and there is another lady in this group who rec I go there a few yrs back. Its great to know u are an early responder, thats the goal and can make the difference between the tx working or not. So u say the new tx is only 24 wks, thats great. Well welcome to the group, its cool to know u are in Md too. ( Like we are the only two people in Md w/HCV, DAH ) Can you really imagine how many people here have it and do not know it! There should be easier , more accurate, and readily available testing for everyone through the Health Dept like they do for HIV. Well i wish u

the best with your tx it sounds like u are on the road to recovery. Betty

Hi and Welcome,

I am Cheryl from land, 48 years old, diagnosed with HCV in April 2009. I am currently in my 26th week of treatment. Doing well and have been an early responder since week 4. I am genotype 1a and have a daughter who was diagnosed also with HepC at the same time as me. She is currently applying for a clinical trial here in land at s Hopkins Hospital, if she is excepted will might begin the new treatment as early as April, which would be great since the new treatment is only 24 weeks if she is an early responder like me.

Please share your story with us, everyone here is very supportive and many have great knowledge to help you with any thing you need.

Gloria, I believe that they know it is at epidemic levels, therefore if they do test freely to everyone , THEN WHAT?? How do they treat even more of us when they dont really have a handle on treatment now. And of course lets not forget the EXPENSE to the govt. They truely would not know how to handle it, so I believe thats why so much is still UNSAID. I dont believe that they dont have answers they just dont like the ones they have. Have they even considered the prevention awareness if everyone is tested, then eventually we could lesson the # of people infected. I know blah, blah blah... right. Betty

Absolutely hear you on these points!!I've caught a couple of articles and the press were trying very hard to call this a baby boomer disease!! That's just so they can label and file it away again. However, I've been known to point out - do folks realize that the baby boomer generation was followed by the smallest generation?? That means that eventually there will not be enough folks paying into our Social Systems to keep us going. Add to that, that folks who already know about their Hep C. They need to begin to receive their Pension Funds a whole lot earlier than originally budgeted for. Also, they need to turn to the medical system to either help with medications they need now as well

as ones for the side affects. Here in Canada, we are very socialized with these kinds of benefits. Provincially, persons that are not able to work, apply for Welfare. Now, those that are disabled, apply for the Canada Disability Pension and their monthly stipend will depend on how much they worked in their past. So, if they are single and that federal pension isn't enough, one can apply for the provincial top up. I believe that all disabled folks here get about $950.00 per month. However, their medical is covered and 99.99% of their medication are covered. So, where does the money come from to pay these people each month?? We all know it doesn't grow on trees! Of course, it's coming off the pay cheques of those that are still working. Same thing with the medical and prescription coverage. No one counted on the fact that perhaps so many of us were not going to pay into the

system; but, rather, withdraw from it!!! So, yes, our governments are looking at the big mess over there in that corner and collectively do not want to deal with it. So, the pile just gets bigger and bigger. Then all of a sudden, that pile is going to topple all over our governments and then they are going to have one awfully big pile of shit to crawl through.I like a lot of people, wonder - where is the money going to come from when both our governments have us in a deficit that will take years to unravel. I'm not trying to be the least offensive here; but, we Canadians wonder how much longer the US has before the Chinese call for payments on their loans?? What happens when they can't pay?Yet, huge sums of money go out to another country that has just faced a disaster!! I sure would like to see, this many years later, what our $$'s really did to help the poor!! Sure, we could start with Haiti,

that was desperately poverty stricken already. Take a look over in the Far East where the tsunami did so much damage some years back. Hell - take a look at New Orleans!!!!!! It's criminal that their are still people not back in their homes there, even today.Gloria

Gloria, this has been a hot spot for me for YEARS now.  The US is already in deep deficit and the places they are talking about cutting expenses on are the exact places that need more funding.  I was HORRIFIED when we were sending funds and people to Haiti.  We seem to be the first ones sending money and supplies to other Countries in need but our own Country takes a back seat to this.  Nobody came to our rescue when New Orleans got hit so hard and that area is still a mess.  Yet we are the first ones pledging money and supplies and man power to other places.    Granted, I have my own theories on what happened in New Orleans and if I'm right, they got the desired results pretty much but at the expense of other states.

There are people here who cannot afford health care...  and not people who are unemployed either.   My husband has worked solidly for forever but for the last 15 years the only time he has had health care is when I was working and had him on my policies.  He has been uninsured since 2006 and has not seen a doctor in that long either.  The company he works for offers medical insurance but to just cover him will cost almost half his check.  It's ridiculous.

Off my soapbox now...

Hugs,
