I thought some of you might want to know about them as well. They have a US office. I have to tell you that I don't have any other info about this org but this is the same thing I did during Katrina-to help orgs that work with people with disabilities. I am going somewhat on faith that they are good organizations because nobody publicizes these agencies like Red Cross and others.

Guest guest
TeriI got my dukes up!! You ready?? Kidding Go back and try to remember when any news show, ever mentions the help from Canada. Canada was first to arrive in Haiti!! Our rescue helicopters are kept fully ready so that when the last woman/man jumps aboard it's gone!!It was really hard to listen to the bashing that reporters and the general population were making because it "appeared" that Canada said "No Thanks" to the war in Iraq. The fact was, elite Canadian troops have always tried to separate the war from the population. It's why we are called PeaceKeepers. They were and had been in northern Afghanistan. Our populations are vastly different, so it doesn't come off very well if we try to compete. One good laugh I had and nothing about the whole thing is funny;but, on CNN there were the reporters etc. around any and all of your air force bases. We knew that you wouldn't find the jets;because, they had been coming in here for about a week up to our bases. Those fly boys spend lots of time when they have it, to give us a show. I mean, both American and Canadian.Truthfully, I'm all for PEACE and EDUCATION. SHARE all the food and everything. I really don't have a formalized plan yet; but, I do believe that we all need to get out of our own way and be ready. The lowest form of animal, as far as I'm concerned, is when supplies and food is being sent by others countries - so very little every gets down to where it belongs. Gloria, this has been a hot spot for me for YEARS now. The US is already in deep deficit and the places they are talking about cutting expenses on are the exact places that need more funding. I was HORRIFIED when we were sending funds and people to Haiti. We seem to be the first ones sending money and supplies to other Countries in need but our own Country takes a back seat to this. Nobody came to our rescue when New Orleans got hit so hard and that area is still a mess. Yet we are the first ones pledging money and supplies and man power to other places. Granted, I have my own theories on what happened in New Orleans and if I'm right, they got the desired results pretty much but at the expense of other states. There are people here who cannot afford health care... and not people who are unemployed either. My husband has worked solidly for forever but for the last 15 years the only time he has had health care is when I was working and had him on my policies. He has been uninsured since 2006 and has not seen a doctor in that long either. The company he works for offers medical insurance but to just cover him will cost almost half his check. It's ridiculous. Off my soapbox now... Now, those that are disabled, apply for the Canada Disability Pension and their monthly stipend will depend on how much they worked in their past. So, if they are single and that federal pension isn't enough, one can apply for the provincial top up. I believe that all disabled folks here get about $950.00 per month. However, their medical is covered and 99.99% of their medication are covered. So, where does the money come from to pay these people each month?? We all know it doesn't grow on trees! Of course, it's coming off the pay cheques of those that are still working. Same thing with the medical and prescription coverage. No one counted on the fact that perhaps so many of us were not going to pay into the system; but, rather, withdraw from it!!! So, yes, our governments are looking at the big mess over there in that corner and collectively do not want to deal with it. So, the pile just gets bigger and bigger. Then all of a sudden, that pile is going to topple all over our governments and then they are going to have one awfully big pile of shit to crawl through. I like a lot of people, wonder - where is the money going to come from when both our governments have us in a deficit that will take years to unravel. I'm not trying to be the least offensive here; but, we Canadians wonder how much longer the US has before the Chinese call for payments on their loans?? What happens when they can't pay? Yet, huge sums of money go out to another country that has just faced a disaster!! I sure would like to see, this many years later, what our $$'s really did to help the poor!! Sure, we could start with Haiti, that was desperately poverty stricken already. Take a look over in the Far East where the tsunami did so much damage some years back. Hell - take a look at New Orleans!!!!!! It's criminal that their are still people not back in their homes there, even today. Guest guest
Gloria,The whole Iraq/Afghanistan thing didn't bother me near as much as New Orleans did.... and Canada was never an issue.. It was FRANCE and those other folks that we've helped out that weren't there... It wasn't until then that I realized how much other Countries hate the US. I had no clue. I guess we're the big bad mean guys... funny.. we had been quiet and keeping to ourselves for a very long time... someone else started that.. we didn't. We just finished it. I really think that New Orleans is a travesty though... So sad... still.Hugs,TeriOn Fri, Feb 18, 2011 at 11:04 PM, Gloria <gadamscan@...> wrote: Teri I got my dukes up!! You ready??
