Guest guest
No problem. Mayo Hospital/Clinic in Rochester, MN. My daughter was fortunate to do a nursing internship program there this summer.  We've had some celebrities go there too.  Just googled Hopkins, located in Baltimore MD. Daughter said JH was ranked #1, Mayo ranked #2.  Unless of course there are more than one of these famous hospitals located elsewhere. That's all I know for today. Guest guest
I am sorry to hear that you are going through this and know this must be very difficult for your son at the age of 17. It is odd how everything seems to be " normal " one day and the next things are just totally different. That is how it was for us but then as we stopped and looked back there were so many signs that we had just chalked up to something else. I do not know where you are from but hope you can find a connection for the support you need through this close by as well as am glad you found our group. We have others on this list with spondy and I am sure they will chime in to give you the encouragement. If you have a local arthritis group it would be good to connect there also, you can call your arthritis foundation and find out. Do not think you are alone in this fight? I felt that way for a while and then one day was sitting at a table at my daughters school giving out some sort of information, I cant remember. I was stressing over the amount of school my daughter had missed and happened to mention it to the other lady helping me. As we talked I mentioned JIA to her and she looked at me like I was odd and said that her son also had JIA. While we were talking another mother walked up and had over heard us and she said she totally understood our frustrations becasue she had been diagnosed with JIA at a young age. So here I had two mom's to talk to about this issue that I had known for years but the subject had never come up. These were not close friends just acquaintances whos children were in the same class with my daughter since preschool, and I only see them on rare occasions. I just say this to point out that there are many out there that will probably never tell you their story if they do not know you have a story to tell them. We do not have a local group here but I wish we did. I am not sure how I would find time to be involved but I know I could find time for it somehow. We have people on this list from all over the world. What state are you in? I would guess we have people from every state in the US as well and maybe there is someone close that can help you feel more connected. I hope things get better for your son soon and that the meds start working. I think it is really horrible when our kids are hit at such a young age before they are walking even and all the suffering they go through. But I also know how devastating it can be for a healthy teenage to get hit and suddenly have to change their lifestyle to accomodate an illness. My daughter was 11 at diagnosis and it was not easy, it was certainly not fun, it was scary with all the testing they did to rule out all the many other horrible things it could have been. But I almost think her age was easier then if she had be struck with this at the age of 15, 16 or 17. Prayers for you and your family. Veri & Jaye 16 poly Hello My 17yo son was recently diagnosed with Juvenile Spondyloarthropathy. He was working a full time job over the summer where he took a couple of days off to attend wrestling camp. When he came home we noted a skin infection/rash. One weekend he helped out a friend on a side job where he started pounding his feet into a shovel repeatedly. About three days later he began with swelling and severe pain in his heels. Doctor diagnosed plantar fascitis but after a few weeks and no relief sent him for blood work. Pediatrician was skeptical about arthritis but we decided to follow up anyway. Rheum. says he either has reactive or possible ankylosing spondylitis. Currently, He takes Methotrexate injections, sulfasalazine, prednisone, and motrin. We are starting Remicade infusions next week since he has had some relief but not complete yet. He still spends half the day with crutches and complains of increasing back pain. Mornings and evenings are the worse time of day. My husband who has been dealing with back pain for the over 25 years has also tested positive for HLA-B27 so we have to follow up with a doctor for him as well. I look forward to talking with others who understand our issues. There have not been any others in our area that we are aware of with arthritis. Guest guest
Hi there, Although my daughter has a different type of arthritis (psoriatic), she started on the Remicade infusions over the summer, and has really seen a big difference! Her affected areas are toes, one thumb joint, knees and lower spine, plus had had recurring bouts of uveitits, losing the sight in one eye twice. (luckily, it has come back and has been stabilized with the Remicade). She also takes methtexate injections and liquid Naprosen. She was on Humira for about a year, but it didn't do much for her. She was diagnosed at age 5, and is 9 now. Hopefully the Remicade will help your son as well. I'll say an extra prayer for your family!! Guest guest
Hello, I am so sorry. It sounds like the doctors are treating him aggressively, and doing eveything right on schedule. You are very blessed with that. Sometimes it takes forever to get a diagnosis and treatment. It takes 6 week here and a state away to see a ped. rheumy! This is a great group for support. You may want to contact your local arthritis foundation, to see if there are any local groups. It is nice for your child to meet others. My children are young enough to go to arthritis camp. That is life-changing for them. They LOVE it. Everyone hurts, and everyone takes meds, so they are not different. Have a very blessed holiday season. Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the list. My son has the same diagnosis as yours, however tested negative for HLAB 27. My husband too has similar struggles. You have found a great group with lots of info. There are others here with same diagnosis; 's son Rob also tested positive as yours did. If you have any questions feel free to ask away. Or if you just need a safe place to vent, you have found others who understand exactly what you are going through. I think I just replied to the email you sent to my personal email address. 1) Teas are diuretic, meaning they make your body lose water along with important minerals, so it isn't a good idea to have more than 2 cups per day. 2) Fruits are high in a sugar called fructose, which is one of the worst kinds of sugar for anyone, even when they are healthy. My program allows small amount of lemon and lime, but some people just starting on my program aren't able to tolerate any for awhile.
