Guest guest
Hey Don, I may not have explained properly. The 50,000 iu is a once per week prescription for three months. I thought it was a lot too but then I did the math. Doc says 5,000-7,000 iu per day is what people need. 5,000 X 7 days = 35,000 per week. 7,000 X 7 days = 49,000. The difference isn't too bad. It will take several weeks to get me up into the normal range. Doc will retest in three months. Today I took the inititive and called a facility to help me rebuild my muscles, respecting what I've been through. They will design a plan that will be customized for me and what I may need from day to day. I'm excited, which is interesting since I've always hated exercise. I just want to feel better. I have been so discouraged with how slowly I am bouncing back. And then I end up sick and in the hospital too. Just shoot me...HAHAHA...just kidding. I can't express how much it helps having this group to lean on. During treatment, it was a life saver but after treatment, I'm finding it just as valuable. So those who are in the treatment zone or outside of it, this group can help. Once you are done, remember to respect what your body needs and don't push too hard. You can make yourself sicker by not respecting where you are at. Prayers to all. I have been posting to folks that V-D is seeming to be very important to most people, and for those on HCV treatment its helps the responce rate too. Im not sure how much a person is supposed to take, but 50,000 IU seems a bit much to me. [i am not a doctor.] I do about 1000 IU per day, and my old Dad says he takes 10,000 IU per day, just for maintaince. Most Americans [maybe most people] are sadly lacking in V-D, I have read. I am glad your negative for HAV-HBV - get those vaccines. Isnt it sad when we patients know more than the doctors treating us? I understand it is because they are busy, and not specializing in certain fields, but it sure does shake our confidence. Please let us know how you are doing. We are all learning from one another here. I am blasting you with love, healing, and everything good. love don in ks From: Ramona Cook <cook_1057@...>Subject: [ ] Vitamin D issues Date: Thursday, April 28, 2011, 10:01 AM Hey everyone, Recently there was a flurry of info about the need for vitamin D. Well, I just got out of the hospital yesterday...horrible acid reflux...at least it wasn't a heart attack. Anyway, after getting home, I received a call from my VA clinic. The nurse told me that my blood work indicated that I was vitamin D deficient. She stated that the normal range is 35 to 100, preferably closer to 70. My level was 17. Yep...major low. I am a bit irritated with my family doc. He never tested me. He flippantly suggested that I take a multivitamin with D. The VA Doc is putting me on 50,000 iu per week for the next 3 months. Yes...all those zeros are correct. The nurse told me that it is no wonder I ache and hurt all over. My bones and muscles are screaming for help. My brain is trying to kick my ass. I am overwhelmed at what I'm finding out about how important this vitamin is. Your body will tell you if you have too much==diarhhea. Normally, you want somewhere between 5,000-7,000 iu per day. Yep, that much. My point in all this is, ask to have your level checked. You will feel so much better if the vitamin is in adequate amounts in your system. And it take several weeks to get it built up. Hep C treatment can take so much out of your bones and muscles. Put it back. Don't let this damn virus take anymore from you than it already has. Stay strong and fight to stay healthy. I also had Hep A & B test...negative...whoopy!! I have to start the process of vaccinations in the next couple weeks. During my hospitalization, they did a CT of my lungs, checking for blood clots. They found that my liver is enlarged and pushing up into my lungs making it hard to breath sometimes. I specifically asked my Gastro if my liver was enlarged. She said "NO." Ok, here is what I'm figuring out. My family Doc and my gastro just want to hurry up and get me out of their offices. It is taking four doctors for me to find out what is going on with my body. My point is, doctors don't walk on water, so get what you are paying for. Make them give you the care that you absolutely deserve. Don't let anyone in the medical field give you the brush off. Do your homework on the internet so your barrels are loaded when you ask questions. I the hospital, my doctor was actually asking me questions about the genotypes, side effects, etc. She openly admitted she didn't know much about it. I immediately gained great respect for her. I gave her a list of all my supplements. The next day, she told me that she had researched them on the internet and told me to keep taking them. I gained tons more respect for her. But I believe that if I wasn't informed, it wouldn't have gone that way. So keep yourself informed so you can take better care of yourselves. This group, and especially Don, is a valuable resource. You all are in my prayers. Ramona
Guest guest
Hi Ramona I hope you dont mean 50,000 IU of Vitamin D, just one time a week. 7000 IU of Vitamin D per day sounds much better. Youve heard me say before that massive doses of anything can harm us too. Im not a doctor, but I am very careful that I dont cross the line, and take too much of something all at once. If I do, it usually makes me sick, and I know then not to do 'that one' again. LOL :-) Exercise is something Im having to get back into also. I am 60 now, and have been laying around for the last couple of years, getting weaker and weaker. Im afraid that I dont have much motivation to exercise regularly, so Im taking it slow. Too much of that will beat me up, just like too little. I have a 10 speed bicycle, and now I have a small electric air compressor to air up the tires. Im going to being riding again. One or two blocks at first, then more and more. Hopefully by the end of summer I can ride a long ways without too much difficulty. I used to love riding my bicycle, so this is maybe something that I can see through. Its not as stressful as say, lifting weights or running. Just peddle enough to keep upright on the bike, and keep moving. I dont have to go fast, or climb hills. Kansas is flat. I really need a good diet and exercise to get my body back into shape. Maybe if I can do this, the doctor will allow me to treat my HCV. I can always hope any way. Please let us know how you do on your protocal. I will do the same. love don in ks ----------------------------------------------------------- Hey Don, I may not have explained properly. Guest guest
Hey Don, Yep 50,000 per week. I, too, am concerned about it but I will give it a try. I can always call the doc and let her know it is too much. We'll see. I just want to feel better. I know I mentioned the exercise thing but I also set an appointment with a dietician. I'm really excited about this. I'm VERY overwhelmed about how to eat. I have to think about my liver, my bones, my stomach and esophagus and futrue stuff like diabetis and heart disease, which both runs in my family. It is crazy. I'm going to push to get what I need from this person too...no brush offs. Today, I feel a bit better. Bruises from IVs and bloodwork needles are turning yellow so they should be gone soon. Don't feel quite so weak, think about going for a walk in the yard later; or should I say a swim around the yard. Yesterday, I went out and picked dandelion blossoms for lunch. I squished the whole time. We are VERY wet here in east central Indiana. We are going to get more too. Lots of flooding. I wish everyone a wonderful weekend. And prayers to everyone. Guest guest
Hi Ramona I wont try to second guess the doctor - maybe he knows what he is doing - I certainly dont. If you start having problems, please make sure you contact his office and let them know. Please let us know too, because I for one, am very interested in this protocal. Hopefully it will make you feel better fast. love don in ks From: Ramona Cook <cook_1057@...>Subject: Re: [ ] Vitamin D issues Date: Friday, April 29, 2011, 7:13 AM Hey Don, Yep 50,000 per week.
