Guest guest
Hi Itchy scalp on treatment may be a sign of a couple of things. 1 - Treatment does sometimes cause hair loss. 2 - Your not staying hydrated enough - drink more water. A suggestion is to not wash your hair all that often, because this strips the oils out of your hair and skin. Also the type of shampoos and hair conditioners my cause itching. Here are a few things I have heard of. [There are many.] - "Woody's Meat & Potatoes Bar" soap. It has tea tree oil and hemp in it, along with some other things. - Tea tree oil. - Alavert. - Oatmeal. - Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo. - There is a shampoo BAR called ZNP. Ask your pharmacist. - A hydrating gel. - Benadryl, or a Benadryl lotion. - Ive heard of hydrogen peroxide helping, but I would be careful about that one. - Vitamin D3. - Avoiding coffee, teas, sugars. - Fatty acids in milk and meat cause more secretions of the oil glands. - Avoid perfumed soaps and lotions. - There is a prescription called Desonide Lotion 0.05%, you might ask your doctor about. You might also talk to your doctor and/or pharmacist about this problem, and see what they suggest. However, some women are under theimpression that interferon therapy will cause them to lose all theirhair. (Well, that's what Pamela stated as one of her mainreasons for not starting therapy!). This is a total misconception. Infact, hair loss while on interferon therapy is infrequent. If itoccurs at all, the amount of hair lost is often minimal and usuallyunnoticeable to others. Women on interferon do not experience hairloss in the way that a cancer patient on chemotherapy does. Hairloss from interferon appears to be most frequent in Caucasians withblack hair, and in Orientals. It typically occurs around the thirdor fourth month of therapy. Hair loss may continue for up to threemonths after treatment is discontinued. Hair loss is more commonamong women then it is among men (as well as less sociallyacceptable). If hair loss does occur, there are many steps that women cantake to minimize this side effect. Women should refrain from dying orbleaching their hair while on interferon therapy, since this mayexacerbate hair loss. A mild hair rinse may be used as analternative to coloring. Avoid permanents and hair straighteningprocedures while on therapy. Many women have found the vitamin biotin(a B vitamin) to be helpful. It is advisable to take this vitamindaily a few weeks prior to beginning therapy and to continue while ontherapy. A mild shampoo and a detangling conditioner are advisable.Nioxin shampoo, Nioxin conditioner and Nioxin hair growth promotercan help keep hair loss to a minimum while on therapy. Nioxin hairloss treatment should be started about a month prior to startingantiviral therapy. Other recommended shampoos include Tricomin,Revivogen and Nizoral. Minoxidil (Rogaine) liquid topical medicationmay be of some benefit. It should be applied only to the scalp andnot ingested. It may stop hair loss and thicken the remaining hair, but continued use twice daily for at least 4 months is typicallyrequired before obvious results are noted.Other tips for diminishing hair loss include: the use of a widetooth comb, avoidance of curling irons and rollers, and avoidance ofdaily shampooing. Avoid cornrowing, tight braids and pulling hairback in a ponytail with tight rubberbands. A short haircut may be inorder. If hair loss becomes a major problem, medical insurances willtypically cover the cost of a wig or a hairpiece. Often a doctor'snote or prescription along with a receipt of purchase is all that isrequired for insurance reimbursement.Fortunately, any hair loss induced by interferon therapy istemporary, and regrowth typically occurs within three to six monthsfrom the drug's discontinuation. The color and texture of hair maydiffer from the person's original hair type. In fact, many womenhave noted that their hair grows back thicker, straighter, andshinier than before! ItchingSome women find relief from itching by using gentle anti-itchingsoaps and lotions made for sensitive skin such as Aveeno, Cetaphilsoap, L'Occitane or other brands containing an oatmeal base. Over-the-counter topical hydrocortisone cream or Benadryl lotion may beapplied directly to the itchy area. It is important to avoidperfumed soaps and lotions.Hot baths and showers have been noted to exacerbate itching andshould be avoided. Instead, take lukewarm baths and showers. It isimportant for women suffering with itching to wear loose fittingclothes made of soft, smooth cotton (not wool) material and to keeptheir skin as moisturized as possible. Drinking up to one gallon ofbottled water each day has also found to be helpful. During hot andhumid weather, women who suffer from itching are advised to stayindoors in air-conditioned places. Finally, oral antihistamines suchas Benadryl or Claritin may be used.----------------------------------------------------------------------- , I hope some of this info will help you.
