There seem to be lots of new members, many of whom are student health

visitors. You are all very welcome: do join in the discussions, or

ask

questions for us all to ponder. Some of our most interesting

discussions in the past have stemmed from students seeking help for an

assignment, or just trying to get their heads around something (which

is

often the same thing that taxes us 'old hands' as well). best wishes

Hi,

I'm a new member of this group. My name is Colleen, I'm 54 and from the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. I have chronic neck and back pain. For the last few days I've been having a bad flareup. I'm always in pain, every day, but some days are much worse than others. Right now it's almost 1:30 am and I woke up because of the pain in the back of my neck. I get occiputal headaches a lot. I am also having lower back pain with sciatic pain shotting down my leg. I went to the chiropractor Tuesday, but alack and alas, he was on vacation.

I have four kids, but only one is young enough to still be at home. He's 15. The others are 25, 32 and 34. I also have, according to my middle son, a granddog named . He's a Schnuggle, which is half Pug and half Schnauzer.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and interacting with you for information and support.

Thanks Larry.

I'm Tammy and I was in 2 automobile accidents in 2 months, both with neck and back strains (June and August). I have been in constant pain for 7 months now. I have gone through Physical Therapy, Chiropratic care and massage in addition to various meds. Last week I finally had an MRI and they found bulging discs on most of my cervical spine, but the worst was between C5 and 6 where I do have spinal cord compression. They also found an atypical hemangionoma (sp?) at T1. I guess the hemangionomas aren't uncommon, but I do have a lot of pain right there so we may be researching further. Currently my doctor wants me to only do massage for the next 4 weeks and if there is no improvement, she will likely send me to meet with a neurologist and a physiatrist. The pain is now even radiating down my right arm which makes it difficult to work (and to type at times of course).

I am glad to have found this wonderful group on the web. I look forward to talking with you all, who know exactly what this is like.

Hello Tammy,We are glad to have you in our group.

As I said in the welcome we are here to help and support you in any way that we can.

I also was injured in an auto accident where I suffered injury to my neck and low back. The accident happened in October of 2003.

I have a disk herniation at the c4-c5 level and disks bulging at the c5-6 and c6-7.

I also have a disk bulging at the L4-5 and a disk protrusion at L5-S1.

I have constant headaches as well as neck and shoulder pain all the time.

When the headaches are the worst it feels like my eyes are going to explode from their sockets.

I can not stand or walk for more than 5 to10 minutes before my left leg starts to go numb around from the back to the front of my thigh. I also have a hard time driving for very long before the pressure of the seat belt strap on my shoulder causes me to hurt really bad.

I also have a lot of problems with the nerves in my low back.

The only way that I can describe what happens is that it seems that the nerves in my leg seem to just fire of electrical impulses that causes my whole body to jerk very hard. Sometimes it happens so fast and hard all I can do is gasp and hope that it will stop. I have had this happen for as short as a few seconds to as long as every 2 to 3 seconds for hours at a time.

When that happens I am exhausted and hurt so bad that I can barely move for several days afterward.

Well,so much for me. I just wanted to share my pain background with you so that you would know that I understand what it is like to hurt all of the time[or at least most of the time].

I hope that we can be of service to you and that you will find the help that you are looking for.

MAY YOU HAVE A BETTER DAY TODAY THAN YESTERDAY AND NOT AS GOOD A DAY AS TOMORROW.

TAKE AS BEST CARE AS YOU CAN AND BE SAFE.

-Thanks Kathy,

I am hoping for the same future. It is early months for me but have

had great comfort in your story. The distance is not so far when we

share. I flew into Pittburgh when visiting friends in Ohio last year.

So far I have had a dilation in early Aug2005 but am finding that I

am getting more and more bad days of eating from nothing to chocolate

and chips ( sorry crisps I believe over there). But at other times I

am able to eat the better part of a meal.

It is a matter of deciding when to travel back to see the surgeon

again. I don't know wether to hold out longer and see or get on with

it and go sooner.

Hi Inger,

It's sad to hear about Tom's friend and I hope Tom takes care of

I think I may have missed replying to this question so I want to do so

before I leave.

I almost never feel blue. On the rare occasions that I do, it's usually just

hormones or something and normally passes after a little while. :-)

YES!!

Welcome EVERYONE!!

Barbara, I was so happy to see you joined. PLEASE feel free to add files regarding communication items.

Have not gotten around to adding Dr. Jim's list as a resource.

Also, it would be so great to get more mom's of older kids. I would REALLY like to hear more about the middle and teen years now. :-)

I learned so much reading other mom's postings regarding younger kids when was a baby, and now I would like to read about the older kids too.

Know anymore parents you could invite to join us?

My goodness, you ladies are busy! LOL A new list and all those files already!

Mark is 18 now and will be a senior. He's part of a job training group this summer. Only they aren't going to be actually working, but doing fun classes together. I'll know more after he starts next week. I'll write more when different topics come up, and I have something to add from my own experiences. :-) Well... one bit of advice...speech continues to improve as our kids get older.... so, don't let anyone discourage you about this. I also think our kids can keep learning *everything* as they get older. School never really stops at our house, and I'm not even a homeschooling mom.

I have two websites to recommend for your links section. Dr. Jim Mac's Communicating Partners http://www.jamesdmacdonald.org and http://www.brianskotko.com We've known Dr. Jim for 15 years now, and he has very good advice for communication and speech development. We met in Boston two weeks ago. He lives in the same apartment building my older son lives in and they work out together in the gym. (my son is studying to be an architect) What a nice young man is, and I'm sure he will be a help to many, many parents in the future. He and Mark had a fun little conversation-- we just happened to meet him as he was coming into the apartment building and we were leaving to go to Plymouth for the day. (We spent a weekend in Boston visiting my son and going to his girlfriend's graduation from Tufts dental school.) said his next research project is going to be about sibling relationships, so if anyone wants to write to him and ask him to join this new list, please do. We are all experts on sibling relationships! He said he should join some of the DS lists. He's going to be speaking at the NDSC convention this summer in Atlanta. And, so will Dr. Mac, as he usually does. We aren't going (my husband, Mark, and I-- we spent too much money in Boston), but I know anyone who goes will want to meet both of them.

Hi Rose, How do you cope with agoraphobia? I was curious because I developed PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) prior to being diagnosed with Celiac. I'm on the verge of a panic attack everytime I get into a vehicle... so I'm home bound most of the time. I've thought about meeting with a therapist, but don't want anymore meds. the group all the new members. I am Rose, one of the moderators. I am 49 years young and have stage 5 RA of the cervical spine, agoraphobia with panic attacks, and bi-lateral epilepsy. I live in Portland OR. Between the love of my life and I, we have 3 teenage boys-his two age 19 and age 17 and my own pride and joy aged 18. I don't post alot because my neurologist wants me to limit my computer time as it is a seizure trigger for me, even though I have been seizure-free for 15 months. I also co-own/moderate various medically based groups on as well as being a member of quite a few. If y'all ever need me, drop me an e-mail at wolflady_1957 or add me to your messenger.Hugs and Blessings,Rose

Hi Cheryl,

I cope with agoraphobia in a lot of ways. I have a dog that doubles as

a seizure alert/comfort animal, my safe people and I started carrying

a cell phone...I also do deep breathing when I feel a panic attack

coming on. I try to keep a positive attitude as well.

Hugs,

Rose

I too want to welcome the new members. My name is Tracey. I am 30 years old and was born with the Myelomeningocele form of Spina Bifida (otherwise known simply as SB), Hydrocephalus (hydro), and Arnold-Chiari Malformation (ACM). As a result of this combination of birth defects and chronic health problems, I am paralyzed from the waist down and use a wheelchair full-time, have a learning disability and an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and am partially incontinent of both bowel and bladder. I have anxiety and depression relating to my physical disability and issues caused by my ASD, and PTSD related to being raped, molested, and as a result of medical procedures I had to have done in relation to my physical disability. I also have hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, chronic back pain and headaches. Recently I had to have a complete hysterectomy and am now experiencing urinary tract and GI tract complications.Despite all the health problems, I am generally a happy person. I am married to the same man I went to my high school prom with (11 years ago!), and he is the best friend I've ever had. I am an orange belt in an adaptive martial arts program, am an amateur public speaker and a volunteer at the local sexual assault center and Boys & Girls Club. I go to school at the local university when my health and finances allow, and am working toward a degree in Community Psychology. I like to crochet, do Soduko puzzles, play computer games, talk to friends, read (right now am 3/4 done with " Something Wicked This Way Comes, " ), write, draw, and do latch hook projects and jigsaw puzzles.
