Hi Soili,

Yes, has had all his vaccines on schedule including chicken pox and Prevnar. To my understanding once you start the meds, no more live vaccines. My concern is the chicken pox vaccine is not a guarantee, but the disease mey be less severe.Another concern is that due to the JRA and the drugs that suppress the immune system his vaccine may not have taken as well as a child who has no immune problems.Kind of like he never got vaccinated at all.

Hi, Becki. I sure would ask if its possible that there may be contact. They don't have to let you know, but if a large portion of kids start to come down with it, my kids school will send a note home. Given 's immune sytem situation, I think you are within your rights to ask. When you call, just mention you heard that some kids have it, explain about , and ask if they may be around him. Even if they are not in his class, he could get it in other common areas - bathrooms, halls, etc - as this is spread by sneezing and coughing and kids are contagious before they show spots. At least you can be prepared and maybe call your dr for some input. Hope this helps some, Michele (mom to 15, pauci & spondy)

Dear Becki,

I would difinetly ask them if he may have been exposed as you happened

to overhear their conversation and due to his health problems and meds

that he's on--it's extremely important for you to know. I'm lucky in

the fact that Kate's school will notify me if anyone in her building has

chickenpox, strep throat etc.. (she's in 2nd grade) I explained to her

school when she started kindergarten (and every year to her teachers)

how important this is as her diease as well as her meds can mask or

imitate some very serious illnesses and at least if they notify me I can

watch for things that seem to be suspicious. I hope that helped you

some.

On an update on Kate as I haven't been on much--she just received 2

custom specially made sterling sliver ring splints for each pinky

finger---total cost for both--$1,000.00! She has more money in her two

" rings " than I have in my whole jewlery box! If you want to be really

extravagant you can order gold ones with diamond settings etc... that

mimick a real ring! She saw one in the booklet that was gold with a 4

marqui diamond setting! Said we could get her that one instead for

Christmas! (sure!!!! LOL!!!) Hope everyone on list is doing well!

Becki, just go ahead and ask. I'm sure the other parents won't mind,

after all who wants it to be a big secret if a child has chicken pox?

Do you people vaccinate your jra kids against chicken pox? We had

Juha vaccinated just before starting him on mtx because hasn't had it.

Hugs to everyone

Soili (whos' on sick leave because of a nasty flu...)

Hi Becki,

Riley's rheumy had her get all of her vaccines after she started the mtx. He just said not to mix the live and dead vaccines. She didn't have a reaction but it was still really scary giving them to her.

Hi Becki and All

Still catching up - I have mostly been glancing through most of the posts to get

an idea about what is going on - but I wanted to respond to this one. The

school nurse met with me when Robbie was first enrolled in his kindergarden -

she was doing a " nursing evaluation " for the school, she referred him to OT and

also gave me a letter typed up for the Doctor to indicate which communicable

diseases/illnesses that they needed to notify me if they occurred in anyone in

the school because of his compromised immune system. They do this for any child

in the school who has an compromised immune system for whatever reason. (they

called me the first week of school because his teacher went home with a fever) -

I told them that was a little overkill - but if any of the listed diagnoses came

up I would need to know. That way if Chickenpox came up in the school, I could

be told and pull Robbie out of the school. What's more, now that the evaluation

is finally complete (this week!) the school would provide home schooling for any

time he needs to be out for his illness (shame it wasn't done sooner - he could

have done school work most of the afternoons he was home - just not the mornings

and evenings!) or if he needs to be removed to avoid the chicken pox incubation

period - or whatever illness. When there was suspected chickenpox at his

preschool his doc said I would need to keep him home for 10 days following the

most recent outbreak, thus adding days for each subsequent outbreak. So this

has been a real lengthy response - but the school should be able to notify you -

with maybe a letter from the doc.

At his preschool/daycare - which is associated with the hospital I worked at

they would put a sign on the front door notifying parents of any contagious

diseases that had come up in the school. (Like strep, chickenpox, etc.)

Henry had chicken pox aged 2 3/4. He didn't have any homeopathy, or anything

else, and was better after about 4 days. Usually children get better quickly

from chicken pox without any medication, although it is usual to use something

topically for the itching. That said, vigilance and careful nursing are always a

good idea, as well as making sure the child gets enough to drink and enough

rest. Henry was on the beach by about day 3.

many years ago. We are seeing this doctor this afternoon to confirm if it is

but in the meantime, I have been dabbing calamine lotion on it to soothe and

also piriton to help with the itching although it doesnt seem to be working! I

start to itch too whenever I see him scratching like hell! Has anyone found

anything else that proved to be helpful for chicken pox?
