Guest guest
A little bit about myself: I was diagnosed with a single large gallstone almost a year ago, after a severe attack which lasted many weeks (I ran a fever and felt horribly sick and sore). Once I started to feel better, I changed my diet (to the diet of Cabot), I also started taking a regimen of supplements (milk thistle, taurine, lecithin etc) and have found a clear improvement in the level of pain (from a constant nagging to occasional twinges). The initial scan showed a stone of 1.8cm, a second scan done about 6 months later, after I changed my diet and started taking supplements, showed a 1.6cm stone. I realise this could be an error in measurement but the surgeon was actually encouraging and said I should continue on as I have been and come back for a scan in 6 months to a year to check my progress. So far, I have been too chicken to do a flush. I promised myself I would, once it was about 1cm in diameter (my Chinese doctor says I should not try to flush it when it is larger than 1cm). So, I want to include anything that might make that stone decrease in size! Which brings me to pectin: I found the recent discussion on pectin and malic acid very interesting! I thought you might also find this reference interesting: Kritchevsky D,Tepper SA,Klurfeld DM. Effect of pectin and cellulose on formation and regression of gallstones in hamsters. Experientia. 1984 Apr; 40: 350 - 351 This study shows a regression of gallstones in hamsters fed on a 4.2% pectin diet. Now, hamsters are not humans but this looks promising! Does anyone know of any studies with humans with regard to pectin? I could not find any reference to adverse effects of pectin, are any such effects known?
