My understanding is that it is supposed > to dilate or relax the ducts so the stones could pass through. Yes and No. Epson salt is magnesium sulphate. A dose of 8g of magnesium sulphate will retain about 120ml of water in the lumen of the gut. This doubles the volume of the feces. The amount of magnesium absorbed after an oral dose is usually too small. Blood normally contains magnesium ions in three states: bound to plasma proteins, complexed to small anion ligands such as bicarbonate or to peptides and FREE. It is the FREE ionized form of magnesium that is physiologically active. Changes in extracellular magnesium concentration have direct effects on vascular smooth muscle tone. Decreases in extracellular Mg++ raise contractile tension while elevations above physiologic level lower baseline tension. So although magnesium relaxes smooth muscle, you will not have enough of the free form in the blood to give you that effect. I think it will be better to try to dissolve or soften the stone. Your husband needs to see his doctor or a qualified alternative medicine practitioner. I've been doing these on and off for about 15 years...when I was younger (in my mid 30's) I started and got to the point I was doing very well with diet, etc., and things were under control. Then I got a little less careful about my diet and after not " flushing " for over 5 years, started again about a year ago. I also think there are more stones as a result of age and hormonal changes the body goes through? Anyway, I am flushing every now and then as I feel like it, no real regimine. Usually wait about a month or 2 between each. I am improved a lot, but still have discomfort at times...never have had the extreme pain many describe. Best to you and your hubby, L.
