I have enormous faith in the veterinary profession and am listening to your insights with great interest. My Dad is now an elderly retired MRCVS/DVM and the family lived in many developing countries, as we all grew up. He worked in small animal practice in Canada, then the Eli Lilly Drug Company, before joining the UN, as a dairy and livestock advisor for many years. So, he had a vast wealth of knowledge and experience and I knew that if any one of the family fell ill (there were 5 kids and my Mum on the road with him), he would know exactly what to do for us. He was a man of intuition, as many 'old school' vets (and doctors) had to be, without all the current interventions and technologies. Afterall, a veterinarian's patients can't speak and tell you what they are feeling. Even today, he is a proponent of taking the least invasive course of action possible in any medical protocol/procedure and has tremendous knowledge with regard to 'old fashioned' remedies that may not have the modern day clinical trials to back them up. He knew intuitively, 30 years ago, that overuse of antibiotics would lead to the situation we have, today, where they are no longer working as effectively. As you say, everything in moderation. My ol' Dad may not have been as well versed in the modern diagnostic practices and treatments that we have today, but I feel very blessed to have been a witness to his insights into the more gentle, holistic approaches and the good sense to at least give them a try before attempting anything more invasive. With regard to epsom salts, the healing properties of these have been known for a very long time and I was amazed and relieved to find that only 1 tspn in juice would quickly abate the intense pain of a gb attack.....with no horrific side-effects. That's one thing that always stuns me when I watch these ads for various 'miracle' medications on the telly. They may be a wonder cure for your ailment, but you could also wind up with a variety of other complications from the drug. Of course, I don't want to damn the efficacy of any drug that may indeed be life-saving, just that I think we have given away much of our empowerment to heal ourselves to a medical profession that has lost its ability to intuit (our inborn inner technology) to the overuse of outer technologies. Something of our dignity and empowerment (as pointed out), as human beings has been lost in all this.... Anyway, just wanted you to know that I am reading your posts with great interest and that your replies were exactly what I've been pondering, but did not have the expertise to express it all in such a well read, erudite way. Thanks so much for your contributions and bless you for your insights, n
Guest guest
With all due respect, I read that site and I find no explanation whatsoever of his claims that Epson Salts when used properly can harm the intestine. Furthermore, he highly touts such nasty vermifuges as Black Walnut Extract, Wormwood, and Citrus Seed extracts. I'm an herbalist and I rarely, if ever use these chemicals as there is a raft of contraindications and tales of woe from their use. If you do a scientific review of Epson Salts, starting witht he MSDS sheets, for instance, you will find it to be one of the more non-toxic substances in the PDR. The Merck Manual lists dozens of uses. A Google search turned up nothing that I could find that indicated problems have occurred. It is one of the more useful products in medicine with widely varying indications ranging from migraines, seisure control, autism management, and other calcium channel blocking activities. Most of this is I.V. use too and the blood vessels are far more easily damaged by caustic substances than intestinal lining. Epsom salts are used for heavy metal detoxification as well. Note that massively overdosed quantities given IV can be fatal and in my profession (animal doc) it can be used as an IV euthanasia solution in an emergency, but this is massive overdose and really requires some barbituates to hasten the demise. The oral toxic dose is 428 mg/kg in men and 351 mg/kg for women which is quite non-toxic. Incidently, I am not recommend the overuse of this product, mind you, any more than one would overuse anything. As we all know, even water can be fatal if overdosed. Personally, I would like to see discreditors such as Dr. to come up with their own evidence of damage from Epsom salts. There sure are a lot of happy campers like me who have used it successfully. This issue came up on the Cure-Zone discussions back in 2002 (see Archives) and there was no substantiation of any harm, none, and plenty of testimonials and data to attest to the safety, even with pregnant women and children. I love my Epsom Salts! Will in Minneapolis
