Hi , Will has already offered far better insight based on his own experience than I could ever do with all this. Although, one thing that occurred to me, which was based on what you said, above, about your age. Are you in mid-life and could you be going through peri-menopause or menopause? It's quite common to have extreme fatigue with all the hormone fluctuations. The waking in the early morning and not being able to go back to sleep would also seem to go with that. As Will said, once you've ruled out other things with tests, it's worth considering that it may be a part of this normal transition that just happens to produce a myriad of annoying chronic symptoms, like fatigue and sleeplessness. In addition, when I wake up like that and cannot go back to sleep one of two things is going on. The first is that my inner-knowing is trying to get in touch and I need to receive a message and/or work through some problem that is plaguing me. If I just stop and say, ok, what do I need to hear, I hear the message and the sleep issues resolve. The second option for me is that my pH is off. Usually being acidic prevents good deep sleep. The pH issues can be from a normal detox reaction (since your body detoxes at night while sleeping) and you need a bit of assistance to speed along the detox (colon clean, drinking enough water, exercise to raise respiration rate or a few supplements like chlorella). Or, your diet (not enough veggies, too much meat, grains, caffeine or sugar). Or your hormones are fluctuating or your blood sugar drops. Or most likely you have tired adrenals and you are having a cortisol spike which often happens traditionally but inappropriately at 4AM. The band-aid approach for this problem is a 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 6 ounces of water, cover with saran wrap and leave by the bed. If you wake up and cannot go back to sleep, take a small sip. That should restore your pH temporarily. IT DOES NOT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM and you should not use this method except occasionally, ie less than 3 days a month. Then, since you can think better now you are rested, find one of those wonderful UK naturopaths or herbalists and get to the bottom of what is causing you the issue. That person should also be able to support you around liver flushing. Will's answer is the right one. Mine is only a bandaid, but sometimes we need bandaids to cover the wound while we figure out what to do next. Hope this helps, (Atlanta)
