Guest guest
We just returned tonight from seeing the new documentary " SUPERSIZE ME " and I want to highly recommend it to any and all gall bladder/liver concerned people. WE LOVED THE FILM! When I got back home to type a review for you I found a friend had just seen the same showing and had sent a mini-review to us at our local food study group. Here is what she wrote: FROM ANNA: " Well, I just got in from seeing a film documentary by Spurlock that is showing at the Uptown theater. What a great movie! It wasn't your " traditional " documentary by any means, just a normal guy with a point to make, and a video camera. And he happens to be quite funny to boot. wanted to see what would happen, healthwise, if you spent an entire month eating nothing but Mcs " food " . That means breakfast, lunch and dinner. There were only a few rules; 1) anything he consumed had to be off the Mcs menu (including beverages) 2) he would only Super Size it, at their suggestion, and 3) he had to try everything on the menu at least once during that month. " He began by getting a thorough physical by 3 different doctors. Throughout, he was being monitored by all of them; a general practitioner, a nutritionist, and I think the other was a heart specialist (or something along those lines) Initially, they all proclaimed him to be in excellent health. Needless to say, that changed very quickly. " The second day, he threw up everything he had eaten, but soon found that the Mcs food developed an addictive quality. By the second week, he had gained 17lbs. All of his levels (cholesterol, etc.) were off the charts, and all the doctors were recommending he stop immediately. His liver was going to hell, he felt like hell, tired and depressed all the time.....until he ate more Mcs, that is. " Thankfully, nothing serious happened to him, but in the end he wound up gaining something like 24lbs. They calculated that he had consumed somewhere along the lines of 30lbs of sugar, and if he had continued, he could have permanantly damaged his liver. The doctor was shocked at that, and commented that he knew that kind of damage was possible by chronic alcohol consumption, but never dreamed it was possible by eating those foods. In all, it took him about 14 months to " undo " evrything he had done, and to lose all the weight he had gained in that one month! I found that really scary! " This movie is packed full of mind-blowing statistics and great information. I am so glad to see something like this come out, I think its really going to be huge. Not long after this film was shown at Sundance, Mcs eliminated their " Super Size " portions. And heres a hoot - I think it's just hilarious that the theater where this film is being shown right now, just happens to be right across the street from what else, but Mcs. We all noticed on the way out, not a single person sitting in that restaurant! Yeah! It was also quite interesting that I noticed there were a number of people there with their children, and families. How great is that! - Aaaaaaaand.........the great project in Appleton, WI, with Natural Ovens is also featured in the film, isn't that fantastic! " Overall, I really enjoyed this film. Like I said, it's not your typical dry, boring documentary, brought to you by some corporation with a vested interest. And this guy is really funny, I especially enjoyed his girlfriend, who had to watch him go through this whole ordeal. That was pretty difficult for her, considering she's a vegan chef! I'm really looking forward to watching this film take off, and will recommend it to everyone I know - thought this would be a good place to start!
