Interesting question. There are almost as many neurons as well as nearly as

much volume of neurotransmitter substance in the guts as there are in the

brain! They call it the " second brain " . Everything is hooked up with

incredibly

complex feedback loops and relays. Almost all of it occurs without conscious

thought but at times our cerebral emotions direct it.

A parasympathetic rush occurs with certain internal gastric and hepatic

functions including a flush. This is the autonomic nervous system in action.

Note that you get this sweaty and clammy condition when you get food

poisoning or nausea. The body senses a need to to pump more blood flow

through the area to prevent venous pooling and toxicity of the intestinal or

hepatic blood. Sweating and skin flushing is part of that process.

All the blood coming back up to the heart from below includes venous

drainage from the legs, uterus or prostate, the entire intestinal tract, and

other organs and runs first into the liver via the posterior vena cava. The

liver

" cleanses " the blood coming from digestion and removes any nutrients (or

toxins) that have just been derived from digestion. This is before it goes to

the heart again. This is why a congested liver causes " dirty " , food-laden blood

to get back up to the heart unfiltered where it is pumped into the lungs and

then into the whole arterial system in that state. This leads to all sorts of

arterial problems and possibly contributes to or may even cause arterial

plaque. One of the most common sources of liver congestion is the swollen

and enlarged liver that results from excess storage of glycogen, most often

caused by a diet too high in simple carbohydrates.

I'm digressing but I'd say in summary that during these flushes, and the

subsequent triggering of specific nerves, the autonomic system is calling for

an increased and more efficient blood flow. This is where the increased heart

rate and simultaneous vascular dilation comes in.

I think it is caused by the stress on the body. My dh suffers from a

tachycardia, his heartbeat suddenly doubles, gos from 80 to 160 and

back again half an hour later. It happens when his body goes under

stress, when he's constipated, when he exercises and the last time it

happened he had just consumed a bagel and a coffee.

I have that occasionally, but not so much when I use

the epsoms before doing the flush, as the magnesium

relaxes the ducts, and other muscles, like the heart.

I think it's just the extra stress the body is under.
