Guest guest
I switched to Nutiva when someone complained about Mountain Rose changing their supplier--- they said that the coconut oil was more of a yellow color and they didn't like the taste. Is that true? I'd switch back too to save a few dollars :-) in VA ________________________________ From: Pamela <pbmaltzman@...> Sent: Wed, March 2, 2011 11:58:46 AM Subject: [ ] Coconut oil... let's see where the bargains are!  Well, I tried to order from Nutiva this morning, but they were out of the 1-gallon size of coconut oil--and besides, they keep raising their prices (now up to $59.99 for 1 gallon). I ended up ordering from Mountain Rose Herbs. It was $44 plus $11.51 for shipping, bringing the total to $55.51 for a gallon of coconut oil (unrefined). Can any of my fellow list members beat this price at all? I know prices are going up everywhere... but when I ordered my first gallon from Nutiva I think they only charged me $39.99! Ow!! I was surprised to see that Mountain Rose beat Nutiva's price. Well, happy shopping to everybody!! Pam Maltzman
Guest guest
Hi, Marti: Thanks for the referrals to Wilderness Family and Tropical Traditions. I've printed out your message. I should really look into going with a co-op... $135 for 5 gallons is great. Expeller pressed would be okay with me, although I do like the taste of coconut oil. Hopefully the Mountain Rose product will be okay when it arrives. I like Nutiva, but they were out, and I get tired of the constant price jumps. I have a 54-ounce jar that originally contained Nutiva, and I keep refilling it from the gallon container, so I'd do something similar with a 5-gallon container. Well, as I get some more bills paid off here, I will be able to buy a larger quantity of the coconut oil at some point. Pam > > > Hi Pam, > > If you use the expeller pressed coconut oil at all (for cooking things you don't want tasting like coconut), then Wilderness Family Naturals has the 1 gallon quantity on Amazon.com for $38. I forget how much shipping is. I've been buying a 5-gallon bucket of expeller pressed oil from Tropical Traditions through a lady who does a co-op. Then it's $135 for 5 gallons with no shipping. It lasts our family about 6-9 months. To do a Tropical Traditions co-op order I believe there is a $295 minimum. Then I buy the Nutiva from a Frontier co-op, and that is $22 for a 54 oz. jar. > > It's a pain to have that 5 gallon bucket taking up so much space, but I do it, because it saves us so much money, especially since we know we're going to be eating this stuff every day:) > > Marti > >
Guest guest
Well, this will be the first time I've bought coconut oil from Mountain Rose. I hope it tastes okay. One of my Nutiva orders of coconut oil did arrive kind of yellow, but tasted okay other than a little burnt. Guest guest
My first order of coconut oil from Mountain Rose arrived today, and it was the normal creamy white. I haven't tasted it yet, but it smells normal. I guess that any supplier can have a bad batch or two. I guess that I'll continue to order from Mountain Rose until or unless I figure out a better way to do it. Also, BTW, the bucket from Mountain Rose has an actual metal handle on it, which surprised me. The bucket is taller than Nutiva's, but smaller in circumference. Since I won't be ordering many other things in bulk besides the coconut oil, I will hold off on joining a buying cooperative for a while. Guest guest
Personally, I get my virgin coconut oil from an Aromatherapy company. They are not licenced here in the UK to sell it for food use, and as a result it is a lot cheaper than that from the food outlets. Obviously, virgin coconut oil is virgin coconut oil whichever source it comes from, and what I choose to do with it when I get it is up to me. I make sure it is cold-pressed virgin oil. Guest guest
Hi, Ali: Could you please post the URL for the website where you order your coconut oil? I'll check them out. If they also sell in the US, and if their shipping isn't too much, I might try them next time I order some. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
I went to Nutiva to buy some coconut oil and couldn't believe how expensive it was either, and the gallon size was out, as you said. I hunted a little and found that www.vitacost.com has the 54 oz. size for $21. A whole gallon is 128 oz. So if you buy two of the 54 oz. size, you still don't have a whole gallon, but it's only $42. And if you decide to buy a third 54 oz., or something else (I bought coconut manna), as long as it totals $49 or more, you get free shipping through the end of March. Guest guest
Hi Pam. Although my branch is located here in the UK, they also have branches in the USA (California), Canada (Ontario), Portugal (Lisbon), and their head office is in Australia (Sydney). They also have satellite branches in Korea, Japan and the Netherlands. Here is their contact page. http://www.newdirectionsuk.com/shop/site_links/info.php?id=19 Just click on the website for the relevant branch. What surprises me is that although the UK branch carries certified organic virgin coconut oil the USA one doesn't. It is also available in the Australia branch, but is considerably more expensive. The USA and Canada branches only seem to have 'Organic refined coconut oil' which seems like a contradiction in terms! You could try phoning and asking them why they don't do the virgin oil over there. I don't know how beneficial it would be for you to go down this route over there. It seems to me that the general proce for coconut oil - as in a lot of things - is considerably cheaper in the States than it is here, to start with, so I am not quite sure whether it would work so well your end. It may be worth doing some research on it though. when I bought my first batch of coconut oil through an aromatherapy provider it was cheaper - around £12 per kilo instead of the £24 per kilo that I had been paying in heath stores. Not only that but I could only buy from the stores in silly little jars that didn't last five minutes. That first batch was beautiful, but I have been able to find it cheaper since, just by doing some research. Selling it for food use just hikes the price up and takes advantage. As long as it is unrefined virgin oil whether it is sold for food use or not it is still pure coconut oil. What I do with it when I get it home is up to me..... Guest guest
I also buy my coconut oil from Vitacost. I have for quite some time. I wish it came in glass instead of plastic containers though. Guest guest
I had to hold off ordering coconut oil till now and Nutiva is out of the gallon size and Amazon is not selling the 54 oz because of quality complaints. Some online sources still have the 54-oz available, but the prices are high. I'm hesitating, but i'd like to order the 5-gallon bucket from Mountain Rose Herbs simply because the cost is under $40/gallon, shipped. I can't seem to beat that anywhere. It'd be nice to hear from Pam who's gotten the MRH CO to see if she likes it... The 2 54-oz containers from Amazon (of Nutiva) would have been $49/gallon, unless you got on their 'subscribe & save', which would make it the cheapest of all. But since it's not available at the moment.......
Guest guest
Hi , If you don't mind the bland flavor, even cheaper is the 5 gallon expeller pressed Tropical Traditions coconut oil. I bought it a few days ago on Amazon.com for $177.77 including the shipping. That works out to $35.55 per gallon. I use that for everything I don't want tasting like coconut, but then I use the Nutiva for things that are tasty with the coconut flavor. Guest guest
Hi, : I'm sorry... I didn't realize till now that you wanted me to chime in again. I am now eating my way through my second MRH gallon of coconut oil. I am happy with it, and I will certainly order again by May 1. I know that batches of coconut oil can vary in quality, color, taste, etc., but I am happy with MRH. I just hope they don't raise the price like Nutiva did. If/when I get enough money ahead, I might order the 5-gallon quantity at one time. I keep a 54-ounce jar (from Nutiva) on my counter, and I refill it from whatever bucket I've got on hand. Gotta find time to make more mayonnaise. I really like the half-and-half olive oil/coconut oil recipe here on the website. Guest guest
Hi, Marti: Thanks for posting that. Maybe I'll try that (Tropical Traditions) down the line. AFAIK, expeller pressed coconut oil is okay too. A few years ago, I had gotten some " Coconut Oil Supreme " from http://www.coconutoil-online.com It was very good, but way too expensive to use in the quantities needed for this program. They also sell by the pound (about 8 pounds to a gallon). Since moving another 2,000 miles further East I've ordered Nutiva from iHerb. I found MRH's CO was very good. I've used many others that I happened to like better, including Nutiva, Garden of Life, Tropical Traditions, Bali, etc. but MRH is equal in nutrient value and quality, as are all of them. Some are just smoother, creamier, taste more like coconuts (which I like), etc. Bee

BUT Tropical Traditions was THE BEST and replaced it w/Green Label.
Guest guest
Best price I've found for 54 oz Nutiva is at www.swansonvitamins.com Only $20. That's where I bought my coconut oil until this last time when I bought a case of gallon buckets direct from Nutiva when they were having a sale. I see now that Nutiva direct is high priced compared to Swanson, so when I buy again it will be from Swanson. - Roy M. > > Thanks Bee & Pam for giving us a review. > > Since I'm not able to find Nutiva at a decent price right now, I'm going to have to go with the MRH (unless I discover that the expeller pressed at Tropical Traditions is OK...). > >

Guest guest
Adri - I was just going over my coconut oil discussion posts that I've saved over time and I, too, read where someone said Bee accepted the expeller-pressed (refined) TT oil. Here is my experience with that oil: I purchased a qt (or a similar size) and liked it. So I purchased three gallons. But when those 3 gallons arrived, they smelled horrible. They sent me three more (at no charge). They also smelled horrible. They finally replaced them (for free) with their green label oil, which is " OK " but I'm sure Nutiva is less costly and 'just as good'. So customer service - excellent. Refined CO...not so much... I don't even want to use the stuff on my skin, it smells so badly. I feed it to my dogs and chickens...
