Guest guest
JO When you buy coconut oil, make sure that it is not cloudy, and does not have a sour smell to it. Sometimes when the coconut oil is cloudy, it still has moisture in it and will go bad quickly. Sour smell is also an indication that the coconut water is still in it and would get moldy and bad easily too. Tropical tradition makes coconut oil in the proven old traditional way. They subject the oil to low heat to remove the moisture. Coconut oil question Hi I'm new to the group, and new to using Coconut Oil. Does anyone here have experience of both Omega Nutrition and Garden on Life coconut oils? I used Omega as a first try of the oil, and it was kind of beige in colour, with not much of a taste or smell (although it was not refined, bleached or deodorised). I know that CO is meant to have a coconuty taste and smell, so I bought the Garden of Life, which is more expensive. Even though I can smell and taste the coconut, it also has an unpleasant smell to it, which is even worse when I heat it. In fact, the smell makes me feel a little ill - it is nothing like coconut, it's just odd. Has anyone else experienced this with GoL? Does tropical traditions have the same smell? Thanks for any insight Jo (UK) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guest guest
Oh, I'm sorry about that...You are so right Jim. I forgot it becomes a cream in cold climates. Maybe she can just smell it then. Thanks Jim, yes, all the CO I've bought is solid white. When melted, all 3 types I've tried have been clear, incl the RBD one (which I now only use on my hands). Does anyone have specific experience of both the Garden of Life and Omega Nutrition brands? Jo
Guest guest
I have used Garden of Life because it was the only one at my local health food store. I wrote a letter to Tropical Traditions and asked them about the quality of GL oil and they said that Garden of Life gets the same oil as they do from their supplier in the Philippines. I have since ordered a gallon size from the TT website and find that TT and GL are both good quality oils. Guest guest
Hi I am also new to the board and to CO. I agree with you Jo, the smell and taste are something you have to get use to. I usually put 1 1/2 tsp. in my tea in the morning and at night. I have to sweeten it with some Stevia. I have used both GL and TT brands of CO. I see no difference between the two. I am so hoping that this helps with a thyroid condition I recently found out that I have. I haven't cooked with CO yet but I am trying to gather up some recipes. Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain some recipes and Coconut Oil diet ideas? Thanks in advance Kim > > I have used Garden of Life because it was the only one at my local > > health food store. Guest guest
Hello, and welcome. There are two coconut cookbooks I know of: Coconut Cookery, and the Coconut Lover's Cookbook. The latter is by Bruce Fife, who is responsible for much of the spread of information on coconuts through his two books. You can find out more about them and order through amazon.com Sharon M Re: Coconut oil question Hi I am also new to the board and to CO. Guest guest
Hi Kim, welcome to the group Love your ID name! I read your post last evening ,so therefore I mixed my VCO with green tea last night, I tell yah I nearly threw up. I even mixed a little stevia in it to see if that would make it pleasurable. The oil was just floating on top and sipping it slowly just made me gag. Threw it down the sink, now I'm hoping my sink doesn't clog up...LOL The only way I can down it is by scooping a tablespoon and sprinkle a little stevia on top, flushed down with some warm water I've been taking VCO for nearly a year and I still can't get used to the smell and the texture rolling around my mouth. I would say my thyroid has improved since taking VCO, I'm down to a low dosage of Eltroxin 50mcg where I used to take 100mcg. I also take bladderwrack for my hypo and have lost a whole bunch of pounds by following Atkins. Good luck and keep us informed! Sharon R > Hi I am also new to the board and to CO. Guest guest
When I take CO I warm it until it’s a clear liquid. I can drink the oil but I can’t go the feel of the firm stuff in my mouth. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, thank you for the warm welcome. I can totally relate to your almost upchucking on VCO in green tea. At first I couldn't take it either, I actually use Oolong tea. However I have to let it cool for about 5 mins and then keep stirring it before I can even think about taking a sip. But I don't sip, I drink it down in a couple of gulps. Like I said I have to keep stirring it though. Right now this is the only way I know how to take VCO, hence the name " coconutdummie " . But I've been doing my research and purchased both books by Bruce Fife. He makes it real easy to understand how coconut oil works. I also just ordered the Coconut Lovers Cookbook. I take Armour Thyroid for my thyroid condition. Never heard of bladderwack or Eltroxin. I was thinking of going to L-Tyrosine, but I feel so much better now that I've started Armour, I'm afraid to change. I tried LA weight loss, and did well but gained all my weight plus back. I have a real dicipline problem when it comes to giving up bread. Thanks again for the warm welcome. I'm looking forward to talking with you all again. Guest guest
Hi Kim, here in Canada, Eltroxin is a brand name for Levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone to treat hypothyroidism. (Sold under the brand name Synthroid in the US). I've heard of the natural Armour Thyroid, but I don't believe we can get it here in Canada. I'll have to ask my Doctor next time I visit her. I hear it's an natural desiccated thyroid from pigs? Is this true? ewwww, nevertheless, it must be better than man-made As for the Bladderwrack, it's botanical name is (Fucus vesiculosus), belonging to the Kelp seaweed family. Just a warning, you need to be extremely careful about any decision to take iodine or kelp supplements if you are on thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Thyroid.about.com is a wonderful place to learn all about thyroid disease. http://thyroid.about.com As for the bread, in the latter phase of Atkins, you can have your bread! And as you will see, more and more companies are making LC bread. What is LA weight loss all about, was it low fat? Guest guest
Well Gals and Guys, As a child I had to swallow Castor oil rarely, Cod Liver Oil regularly........... No trouble with VCO in any form. IN tea I need a bib as at that hot temperature it wants to drip onto my shirt. Just shut your eyes and imagine how much better you will appear, then swallow. Best Regards, Lorenzo A 1998 study from the New England Journal of Medicine found that 96% of peer reviewed articles had financial ties to the drug they were studying. (Stelfox, 1998) Big shock, huh? Guest guest
Hi Sharon, OK! Levothyroxine is what I started taking when I found out about my thyroid condition. Then switched to Synthroid, and Cytomel (T3) I wasn't feeling any better on either. I always go to about.com and read Shomon's colums. I receive her emails regularly. That is where I heard of Armour Thyroid. Yes is it thyroid from pigs and I felt the same way you did about it when I first heard of it EEEWWWWWW But I do feel much better. My hair isn't falling out anymore, I'm not as tired and I sleep better at night, my skin isn't as dry either. LA weight loss is a high protein diet, but you are allowed to have certain fruits with it. The first 3 days is called the take off phase. You eat lots of protein, green veggies, 2 oranges and 8 glasses of water a day. It's like most other diets. I lost 27 lbs on it, but that was before I found out that I have a thyroid condition. Talk with you soon, have a great night! Guest guest
Pamela, I could not recommend a paticular brand to you without asking a number of questions first. And no matter what your answer to the questions, it will still depend on your individual preference. Such as 1) is there a specific health issue you are concerned about 2) what do you intend to primarily use it for - cooking or eating raw (whether as a spread or melted on other food, etc.) 3) do you like the smell/taste of coconuts or not 4) is there a budget you'd like to adhere to and so on With my customers, at least half of them are fighting for their life, against cancer or other serious problems. For them we are looking for therapeutic value. The oil that we have had the longest experience with is Tropical Traditions virgin oil, not the expeller pressed. If an oil is desired for therapeutic reasons, then we have enough positive history with the TT oil to recommend it to our customers. And they get results. We have been lucky and never experienced problems with the TT oil as long as it was ordered direct from the company. I have encountered resellers who package the TT or other oil in the wrong kind of plastic containers, which ruins the oil in no time, very often overheat and even burn the oil in the process of liquefying it, contaminate the oil because of the humidity, or from other oils packaged there. We have seen good therapeutic results with Kokonut Pacific oil too. We do get it once in awhile, but here we have sometimes encountered a smokey smell which some people can't tolerate. But we will order it again. We have other good quality oils from Thailand and from India that we are currently using or just starting to use, but while we like them, we do not have enough history with them just yet. I am surprised at the types of temperatures , 400 F, that has said that virgin oils made by expeller press, such as Celebes or Nutiva see. Our specifications from our purchase specifically state that the oil has been processed/dried at or below 104 F and are cold-pressed from fresh coconuts. However the oils do have a strong coconutty aroma. I did not ever believe they were low temperature dried, but I didn't think it was that high. I use them myself occasionally for cooking. I do not recommend Nutiva's " hemp protein powder " . You'll notice it says 37% protein. We buy this same product but it is really sold as hemp flour. It costs about 10 times less to buy from the producer than the real hemp protein powder which will have 50 to 52% protein. It takes more work to sift and sift the milled hemp fibre to get a higher protein content. We buy the higher quality product and use it for people who want a higher plant protein, good insoluble fibre addition to their diet. Many urban people are not aware of the ups and downs in agriculture, the difficulties in getting good crops, proper storage, cleaning and processing , and production of final product. It is a big challenge and coming from a farming area ourselves, we are so happy to be finally bringing a wonderful new agricultural crop from the tropics to our customers. Guest guest
Hi Bee, My apologies if you've answered this already. But I have a question about this line from your website: " Coconut oil can be taken by the spoonfuls with meals to aid digestion or melted on cooked foods. " Does taken by the spoonfuls mean in a solid state? Is it better to take as a solid or melted on cooked foods as opposed to melted in, for example, homemade chicken stock, which is what I did today. Thanks!
