Guest guest
I honestly don't know if it will or not. My OS didn't even do an MRI because he said it wouldn't give him the information he needed ... he needed to do a scope and see inside the knee himself. And I still don't have a clear picture in my head of what the synovium is. I was thinking of it as just the fluid in the knee, but I've read about synovectomies and damage to the synovium membrane, so I guess I have been thinking of it wrong. I haven't pulled down my A & P book to get a good idea of what it is. Meg. On Jan 1, 2008 1:59 PM, Jen Freeman <fjen37@...> wrote: > Meg, > I looked at some of your pictures. Guest guest
The socks I use don't have a patella hole. I wore them 24 hours a day for the first few days. After that, I just wore them during waking hours. I have been wearing some type of compression for about 3 years straight. TEDS that you get after surgery also work well for me. If you live near a large medical supply house, your first stop might be there and try several different brands and get sized. Guest guest
The synovium is a membrane that encloses the knee joint and produces and contains the hyaluronic acid that lubricates the joint. Synovitis is inflammation of the synovium. My local doc told me I have it & there's nothing you can do about it. You can't cut out part of it because the whole synovium is usually affected. You can destroy the synovium (I've read in med articles that the best way to do this is by radiation <shudder>, but they can also do it by hand). My doc said that the membrane that grows back to replace the synovium isn't " as good " as the original. I forgot to ask him what that meant. However, I've subsequently seen a doc in Seattle & he says he doesn't think it's synovitis but more meniscal tears. Won't know till he goes in, I guess. What doesn't make sense to me about his diagnosis is that I just had arthroscopic surgery in May to " fix " tears in my meniscus and came out of the operation with more pain than when I went in. And this pain didn't even start until I had an operation a year before that to " fix " a meniscal tear. So the synovitis diagnosis makes more sense to me (although I'd rather have meniscal tears, because it seems that you can never fix chronic synovitis, but meniscal tears can be removed till you don't have any meniscus left & then you can get a new knee). I read that they keep the synovium when they do a knee replacement and I can imagine my pain getting a lot worse if I did that. Good luck. I hope you can find relief. Guest guest
That was exactly what happened with me. According to the research, the doctors cannot even begin to understand your pain unless you get at least 3 MRI's over an extended time period. Until you find a solution, I would suggest doing like I am doing. Use RICE as it works best for your situation---(rest, ice, compression, elevation). Exercise, but don't overdo it-----medication that works for you----if medication works for you. After four relatively minor surgeries, I am to the point rest and compression are getting me by. I live a relatively normal life now, but am careful to not overdo it. It was to the point four years ago I was virtually bedridden. Mike MT How do you get a doc to order MRI's? Mine just won't do it. He thinks x-rays are " good enough. " I'm done with him. I've never had an MRI and was diagnosed with CP 25 years ago. A good doctor can gain most of this information by simply sitting with you, looking into your eyes, and really listening to you. That was one of the main deciding factors I used in choosing a surgeon. The two surgeons who did surgery on me looked at my MRI first, but didn't derive anything conclusive from the MRI. The technologist that did my first MRI said they had never seen that much inflammation in the knee and calf without a major injury. Guest guest
I am scheduled for surgery in March. And basically he will go in and check things out and clean up what needs to be done. The success rate varies but he said that about 85% have no pain afterwards, 10% have less pain and 5% no change. Have you tried seeking a " Sports Medicine " OP? Sometimes they are more inclined to investigage and really find out whats going on. I would point blank tell them you want an MRI done so that you can be certain whats going on. xray don't show everything, and MRI don't always either for that matter. But they do show more than xrays. My problem is that mine has been as a result of a personal injury it which I slipped and fell on a wet surface. The liability in my case is low because they say I should have seen the wet floor and walked around it. True I suppose but alot of people were walking across it so I thought it to be safe. No one else fell but me, so thats against me too. There were no " safety cones " out, but they say there were. My lawyer has instructed me to settle because if we go to trial and I lose they will ask the judge that I pay them back lititagtion cost, I can't risk that. Its little old me, a middle class school employee against a major world wide company. They offered me money, yet not at all what I would expect. I have no choice but to take it and walk away. They aren't really admitting fault, they just want to throw money at me in hopes I go away. Its really discouraging. and all the while it hasn't been about money as much as they need to make the surface a non-skid surface. I have never sued anyone in my life and its frustrating and embarrassing really. They make you feel you just want money. Here I am 1000 miles away from home for a deposition that is never gonna happen because I have no choice but to settle with them. On top of that I have a terrible cold so I can't even enjoy this little trip as a vacation! Sorry for the rant, but I am sure you will understand my frustration. Guest guest
Re: Knee Injury Can you get another doctor? Yours is trying to save money at your expense. And don't let them substitute a CT scan for an MRI, another money saver -- the radiation from a CT scan is very high. There's been a lot of discussion in med journals lately about the dangers of using CT vs. MRI, esp. for soft tissue scanning. Sometimes we'll run up against a doctor who's forgotten the Hippocratic Oath & we have to be strong to resist their unhelpful help. Ann How do you get a doc to order MRI's? Mine just won't do it. He thinks x-rays are " good enough. " I'm done with him. I've never had an MRI and was diagnosed with CP 25 years ago. So sorry to hear you're going through that. > > I went to the doctor on Tuesday and had some xrays even though I know xrays are bad...I just knew something wasn't right. My dr believes I have a meniscus cartilage tear from the pain I described in my right knee but feel some pain in my left knee so I might have a minor tear in that one also. Xrays can't detect this type of tear so I have to get an MRI next Friday. Are MRIs also really bad? > > She prescribed pain pills but I haven't even filled them. I've been putting oil of oregano on it once a day and keeping it elevated throughout the day. The pain is very unbearable at times though. > > I've also been having horrible detox reactions from cheating at times over the holidays, getting the xrays and also I think stress from the injury. I can just tell my body is going through a really hard time. > > I had the egg drink this morning and had diarehha 8 times just while drinking it. Horrible headaches, liver pain and red, itchy skin. > > I've taken a few epsom salt baths and was going to do a few coffee enemas in the next few weeks to help my body detox. I would dry skin brush but it's hard for me to stand right now. > > Is there anything else I should do to help me through this hard time? What if I have to have surgery on my knee or both knees? I really don't want to because of the drugs they'll give me but I don't know what to do I'm in so much pain. > > Thanks for all your advice and again you are in my thoughts and prayers. +++Hi , Thank you for your prayers for me and my Mom. This program helps your body get rid of the bad effects of x-rays and MRIs. It is possible you'll need surgery. I've known others on this program who had similar kinds of surgery and they are doing well, but they don't take antibiotics recommended, and only take pain killers to get through the worst pain after surgery. You will detoxify more, and your knee will be worse when you cheat. All the best, Bee
