Guest guest
I understand what you mean about being a vegetarian, Aikya. I prefer that myself. But I can live with eating more fish than beef. As for the weight and exercise, I've been starting back up with the exercise over the past three weeks. I'm up to swimming a mile 3 days a week and spending 2 45 minute sessions on my cross trainer. Since my recovery from anorexia it seems that I've developed the metabolic rate of motor oil. Guest guest
I have hit a weight loss plateau myself. The secret seems to be the exercise which, even in California, is harder to do in winter when it rains lots. I'm an ex-vegetarian and in many ways would prefer to be a vegetarian. If I could figure out how to keep my body healthy and stay vegetarian, I'd go back to it. Guest guest
I had understood catfish to be an avoid. Guest guest
Dear Sparrow, I don't think I have apple cider vinegar. I didn't think we were allowed vinegar...and I do have honey I'm glad to hear that someone is having relief, . I wonder if I am sticking as close to it as I thought I was. I've done better today and my tummy seemed to calm a bit by afternoon. I've been drinking peppermint tea which I read is a colon soother. I found an article online about IBS and interestingly the things author says to stay away from are dairy, corn sweeteners and wheat. Is IBS indigenous to O's or what? rochelle
Guest guest
Right. Catfish is an avoid. Dont' know why. Just bought red trout (did you know it came in red?) tonight. Sprinkled it with Mexican seasoning, wrapped it in foil and baked for 1/2 hour at 350 degrees. A squeeze of lemon and yum! Guest guest
Not an expert, but its not one of those things that are easily tested for medically. Not the systemic kind - but its very common these days and you just have to learn about it and kind of go by the symptoms and see how you respond to following the prescribed treatments or diets for it (no sugar, etc.). I forwarded a newsletter out on it that I received not too long ago. I will try and find it and resend it. My e-mail was messed up for a while so not sure if I still have it - but if you look it up on the net or on the web site at the end of all our messages from this list (one with the word dusan on it) it will lead you to information on it. It can cause bloating, etc. Sugar cravings. There is a LOT of information out there about it. Kind of rampant these days with our diets, overuse of antibiotics, etc. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Get the book -- The Yeast Connection -- by Dr. Crook. There's a test inside to take which will give you a good overview of whether or not you have candida and also what to do about it. I have it. It's not easy to get rid of, you really learn to control it and to live with it. Following your blood type diet will help as long as you overlay it with the Candida diet. Guest guest
Just to play " devil's advocate, " my gastroenterologist told me there is no such thing as the candida for which we are all being sold remedies. There is candida infection in the vagina for women. The other stuff is pure fiction. Now I was convinced I had candida. I religiously bought and consumed probiotics (lactobacillus, etc.). In fact, an alternative health care guy--a chiropractor -- wanted to sell me a cure once. It was expensive and herbal. Unfortunately for him, I know enough about herbs to know that he was selling me some very expensive, ineffective stuff which he claimed was the one and only cure. I have been on the O diet now for 4 months. Before I started, I had trouble with flatulence and constipation not to mention weight gain. Since I wanted to lose weight, I have seriously limited my intake of grains and beans which supposedly O's don't digest very well. Anyway a couple of months ago I noticed that the flatulence was gone. That was one symptom I always blamed on candida. In my case anyway, giving my body a chance to clear out all the undigested gunk from wheat, dairy, grains and beans eliminated that problem. The other thing is that I have fewer allergic reactions, another thing blamed on candida. When I first started the diet, if I went off -- ate a wheat cookie or had even a supplement with a corn product in it -- I would have an immediate allergic reaction (usually sneezing) and then watch my body go through various changes for 2 or 3 days afterward. Now I notice that I can eat the things on the forbidden list with little or no noticeable reaction. I figure the weird stuff inside is still going on but not causing noticeable havoc. That doesn't mean that I've started eating everything on the " avoid " list. But, if I am in a situation where the only food available is in the avoid list, I can eat it without panic and just go back to my regimen as soon as possible. The past few weeks I have been noticing that, when I do my exercise--which is hard in the winter months--my appetite is less. I can't give any scientific explanation for this but I suspect it has to do with blood sugar/insulin and with nutrients getting where they are needed. What if this candida thing is a ruse? If there is a candida yeast, it has to have food to thrive. The food for it in my opinion is the undigested junk accumulated from eating all the foods on our " Avoid " list. Guest guest
Real good points, Aikya, which I am not going to argue with you about. I DO still believe in candida though - and know how Doctors look at it, but that doesn't mean I buy it. Thats why I said its hard to test for which is why they don't believe its real - but I firmly believe it is. Even in the natural field I take everything with a grain of salt though(research it out instead of just taking people's word for it) - and in Rochelle's case - who knows what is going on. The funny thing is - the O diet is close to the candida diet. I just offer it as a possibility. Personally I have been travelling a lot lately - just got back from WA for medical appts. and have to go back again in Feb. which is making it really hard to completely stick to the diet. You have been a lot more faithful to it than me - so I am actually encouraged by your comments. Hopefully they will help Rochelle too. Jeanie Re: frustrated From: Runtshell@... Guest guest
My father had candida, and he is Type " A " . He has been on Nystatin for a number of years to control it. I gave him " Eat Right 4 Your Type " for Christmas. I hope he follows it. He also had colon cancer in 1992. Fortunately, it was caught early, and he only needed surgery. I am Type " O " and have been following the Type " O " diet since April 1999. I have had great results. I also take the Right Multivitamin, the Right Herbs and the Right Probiotic. Guest guest
Aikya: Congratulations for finding the help in the O diet. If you look at it closely, it really resembles the Candida diet. And I can assure you there is such a thing as systemic candida. I've suffered from it for years and I work in the medical and alternative health fields. So far, I've got 15 years experience (5 in allopathic medicine - MDs - and 10 in alternative - a chiropractor and clinical nutritionist. I've seen many, many people - men, women, children - who suffer from candida. The blood type diets help plus the use of food supplements. This is not a hoax. I've known many doctors who strongly believe in candida and do the recommended blood testing, and alternative methods of testing (Contact Reflex Analysis and Applied Kniesology) to prove it. I'm glad you're better. Diane Re: frustrated From: Runtshell@... How would I know if I have candida? Guest guest
Diane, I believe you are right about candida. It is definitely a health problem but can be controlled by diet. Sugar and wheat mixed are lethal poisons that break down every organ in our body and one of the signs of overload is candida. BUT!!!! Garlic, colloidal silver (gets rid of all fungus, bad bacteria, and viruses, including herpes) and the beneficial foods are what will get rid of candida, and heal our bodies. Guest guest
Hi : Thank you for writing about your struggles with getting help. It took me back to our difficulties with getting help and how Steve's therapist thinks I have some PTSD from the trauma of not being able to get any help for my seriously ill child. Also I can really relate to your blame-the-parent experiences. This is a typical response in society to things we do not understand. You would not believe how many people have asked me what bad lifestyle choices I have made that made me develop cancer. When it comes to mental illness, parents are positioned so easily to be the fall guys. It would be so simple if the problem were just a dysfunctional family, it could be fixed and explained. Unfortunately OCD is not neat like that. However as we are such a critical factor in our kids' recoveries, I think we do have to address very honestly with ourselves what we can do to help ourselves and make ourselves better able to help our kids. One thing I have learned is that mental health professionals are very human and get discouraged easily when dealing with tough cases like our kids with OCD and comorbid depression and other alphabet soup. I am very up front with them about whether they want to work on a case which will go up and down in a chronic fashion sometimes in spite of their skillfully applied therapy. Many mental health professionals prefer to work with the " worried well " who are having problems dealing with normal life situations, e.g. job loss, divorce, death of a loved one, accidents or acute illness. These problems will improve generally with time and the case can be viewed as a success. Chronic problems like serious mental illness don't typically follow this track and the fallout from this is felt by family members and mental health professionals alike. I try to find people to work with Steve who see and find rewarding the challenge of working on teaching control of a chronic problem which waxes and wanes. Having a therapist who admits to be stumped is not altogether a bad thing. As long as they start to do their homework to try to figure it out with you. We know our kids best and can learn to figure out quite a bit about what works and what doesn't. Rely on your intuition that this is not caused by the family and is part of 's neurobiology. It helped me a lot to get my own supportive therapy. You can imagine that dealing with my anger at being blamed for causing Steve's OCD by various mental health professionals was a big part of my therapy. Also when parents are getting help for themselves and the problems continue with the child, the treating professional has to refocus on dealing with the neurobiological issues underlying the situation. BTW, since we started working on adjusting Steve's meds he is doing quite a bit better. Of course he has quite a way to go to get back on his feet. I am sure several of the mental health professionals we have seen in recent years would have attributed his symptoms worsening as caused by family tensions as he asserts his independence as a teenager and our enmeshment with him. The truth is that his brain chemicals got out of whack and need adjusting. What has helped me is to see the treatment team members as technical advisors to Steve and our family, it is our job to assess their advice, ask questions, probe why they see things a certain way, and then help Steve make good decisions re: treatment. You are working very hard to turn the situation around and your determination and persistence will be rewarded. Luckily you live near a lot of good OCD resources. I hope you are able to do something just for yourself to help deal with the difficulties you are coping with right now. Please keep us posted on 's progress. Take care, aloha, Kathy (H) kathyh@... I called over 10 places yesterday and what we have to go through to just talk to a LIVING person is incredible. I left messages on at least 5 voice mails. I called Yale........I must have worded things wrong cause they acted like they didn't even want to talk to me... I called several other places that told me they don't see anyone under the age of 18, then I got the one who is in our insurance book but was told they don't accept insurance only cash!!!!!!!!!!!! Yale told me also to call the doc is seeing and ask them to refer us to someone else. I found that when they find out is already seeing someone then they really don't even want to talk to me, they just tell me to call her p-doc. Even when I tell them she is not getting better she is getting worse.. Then I also got the ones that told me I had to fill out an application and after they received it, it would be at least 8 weeks before anyone would call me, and probably another 2 weeks just to set up an appointment. I can't believe what it takes to get help ................. So I called Ellen and told her what was going on, she said she does not feel it is a medication problem...she feels it is a family problem (OK here we go again, the parents are to blame) She first wanted a family meeting, then she changed her mind and just wants to see me. She feels that because I have depression I should also be seeing a p-doc. ( My depression is under control as long as I take my medication.!!!!! ) Ellen also said she is totally stumped as to what is wrong with , she feels there is an underlying problem, but because wont open up it makes things more difficult. I have talked with Glenn (hubby) and my mother, since we all live together and we do not feel that it is anything we are doing wrong. If anything we have learned to come together and help each other, and back each other in any of these rough situations. If we do not agree with something the other one has done or said we do not discuss it in front of , we talk about it later as civil adults.......... Finally I called my insurance company, we have a new insurance, and I happen to really look at the card and DUH....there was a number to call for behavioral health. So when I called I was in shock Igot to talk to a LIVING person, on the first try WOW.... Anyway they asked me a whole bunch of questions pertaining to . The person is a counsellor. I felt they handled it very well, as if they knew what they were doing.. After talking to her for about 45 minutes and answering her questions, she said she would do a search and help us to find another p-doc that would be able to see us ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it was my insurance company that was more willing to help us then anyone else. One other place did call me back after I talked to the insurance and incredibly she said when they get a cancelation she will call us so we may be able to get in within about 2 weeks or less. I am going to cancel my appointment with Ellen since I do not feel it is going to help us as far as goes. Why are the parents always to blame for any problems that our children have. Ellen has stated to me twice in the past 3 weeks that she is stumped, and that really bothers me because that means she does not understand the problems we are having. (except she feels it is our fault). Mean while has finally calmed down again it has been 2 days now and no fighting with her. She is very tired, though. When she was in her rages last week she had trouble sleeping, she probably only slept about 5 hours everynight. Now she is back to sleeping about 9 hours a night and does not want to get up in the morning. We have a little girl that lives next door Kayla, and she comes over in the morning to catch the bus with and . She is the same age as (6). It was a good thing that was not in the same mood this morning that she was in last week, cuase she would have lost it. Kayla told and that SHE is better then we are and that her family is richer then we are. Had been in her mood she would have torn Kayla to pieces. But she handled it pretty well and told her she isn't better then we are and so what if they have more money then we do. We don't care. So now I am waiting for my insurance company to call me back. As well as all the places I left messages. I also called the OCFoundation that we have here in North Branford CT and left a message, saying that I have an 11 year old daughter with OCD and depression and we really need help. So we will see what happens today.. Meanwhile I am not as frustrated as I was yesterday, but I am exhausted. Thanks for listening............... Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, in CT. You are living in the same city as the OCFoundation - gee, I wonder if you could pop over and ask them what's going on with the conference?? I'm just kidding. Finding and accessing professionals is probably the worst part of dealing with medical issues. Since OCD isnt 'main stream' enough, its still hard to find adequately trained people, or should I say: people who are trained in E & RP and know what they are doing. Its good to hear that some insurance carriers are stopping to talk to their clients. We are, after all, people, not numbers. It sounds to me like you may be able to access help for soon. Re:Ellen. This is just my opinion, but she sounds burnt out. If a professional keeps saying: I dont know what to do - this is not a good sign! Perhaps you could give her a break for a while, since she isnt being productive towards your situation. Its good for Ellen to admit her dilemna, but you dont need to hear it - twice! This blaming the parent stuff, has got to stop. Its legitamite to say a parents' style needs to be examined, but not when you have been seeing the therapist for a long time. Its an excuse. This is not to say that many of us dont need to change an attitude, or action, but it should be done in the initial stages of treatment, not when 'all else fails'. I cant count how many times we have been sent for a parenting update - by people who have very little knowledge in what ocd is or what its like to live with ocd. AUGH! good luck to you all - wendy, in canada ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Hi Terry: I am very sorry to hear that things are so difficult right now. I hope you have some friends or family to support you nearby. YOu might want to set up an appointment schedule with the therapist so you choose a time each week when he is available so you can see him consistently. What you are describing sounds to me like depression. Of course I am not a doc, but I suggest you call the therapist right away and discuss this complication/comorbidity possibility with him. Saying excuse me when he insists is only participating in his OCD and will unfortunately only make him get worse. I hope the therapist can work with you and your family to explain this and get you all on the same page with ways of dealing with this. For example, saying this is OCD talking and you are sorry it is bossing him around, but you cannot participate in OCD. This will probably get him upset in the short run. In the long run it will help your son recover from OCD. What dosage of what medication does your son take? He may need an adjustment or augmentation to deal with the depression. Please call his psychiatrist right away so he does not need to suffer like this. Good luck, take care, aloha, Kathy (H) kathyh@... Guest guest
Hi Terry, I'm sorry to hear that your son is having these problems, and that they are affecting your family. Sometimes the beginning period of treatment can be rocky, and it's easy to feel as though not much is happening. We all want the problems to go away and they can't leave fast enough! That said, I think you are right to consider that your son's meds may need to be changed or adjusted. Why are you not able to see the counselor more often than every two weeks? If this is due to his schedule, I would think something needs to change here so your son can have more intensive therapy, with a more accessible therapist or the current one arranging his schedule to accomodate your son's needs. Your son thinking you've burped and insisting you apologize is just another OCD obsession/compulsion though I can see how it would get annoying very quickly! Following OCD's rules and apologizing whenever OCD causes your son to think you may have burped just feeds the OCD. As you've no doubt noticed, the more you follow OCD's rules, the more there are to follow! Have you tried saying "Excuuuse me!" a la Steve , burping on purpose, using paradoxical humor as Kathy H. suggests? My daughter is younger (6) but this approach has been very useful to us. Right now, just beginning treatment and not very far off the starting block, it might make best sense to simply accept that all your son's behaviors are OCD. It may in fact be true, but anyway as he makes progress he will probably have better insight into what is and what isn't OCD. It's important right now to pick your battles, and let some things go since you nor your son can set everything right all at once. Is your son's teacher aware of the problems he's having while there? Make sure she's aware that some kids may be subtly teasing your son, and perhaps she can intervene. Does your boy have a 504 or other accomodation to help him be successful at school? One may be necessary at this point, it can always be modified or dropped later as he recovers. Best of luck Terry, right now I know you are feeling bewildered and frustrated but your son's progress can be surprisingly quick once he's on the right meds and receiving good E & RP. Kathy R. in Indiana Frustrated I am feeling very frustrated. I feel like we're not moving forward. We started with the therapist but can't seem to see him weekly so in maybe 6 weeks we've seen him 3. My son is blaming everything he does now on the OCd so there's no discussing behaviors with him at all. At school, any child that even looks his way makes him very anxious and he's sure they're all trying to bother him, which they might actually be trying to do. He has started this new thing where he keeps thinking you burped and he tells you you burped and so you have to say excuse me. Its terribly annoying to me and more so for my daughter. He's crying that he doesn't want to go to school because the kids are bothering him so much. I'm just at a loss. Maybe I should find another behavioral therapist. One who could see him more often. Maybe his meds need to be upped or changed. I just don't know anymore. In the meantime my daughter has gotten extremely moody and is yelling at me and my son for the slightest things. She's 6 and it's hard to know if these outbursts are from stress from her OCD brother or a reaction to the loss of her father 3 months ago, or just a six year old phase. Please, if any of you have any suggestions, I'm at wits end. Terry You may subscribe to the OCD-L by emailing listserv@... . In the body of your message write: subscribe OCD-L your name.
