Hi again Terry, I meant to say in my last post: I don't know what behaviors your son is doing, saying the OCD is at fault. Though OCD may be influencing his behavior, I didn't mean to give you the idea that you personally had to put up with anything/everything he does.

In our home, if something is dangerous, destructive or very, very annoying to others, it has to stop whether it is OCD-related or no. We had a lot of this early in Kel's illness, prior to and during the first few months of medication.

Behaviors that don't fit the above, such as unpleasantness, whining, and so on get taken upstairs in our home. I tell Kel to go get it out of her system, and she's welcome to come back downstairs and join us when she's feeling better.

OCD certainly complicates parenting, but that doesn't mean "anything goes." Basic good parenting still applies!

I mostly meant that I think it's unproductive to get into debates with your son whether or not a certain behavior is OCD. Part of recovery is his learning to identify OCD, which makes challenging his claim that something is OCD unhelpful.

Right now, just beginning treatment and not very far off the starting block, it might make best sense to simply accept that all your son's behaviors are OCD. It may in fact be true, but anyway as he makes progress he will probably have better insight into what is and what isn't OCD. It's important right now to pick your battles, and let some things go since you nor your son can set everything right all at once.

Thanks Kathy for your input. I needed feedback as I'm feeling so frustrated.

Tara,

Oh boy do I know your frustration...I'm in grad school and have the same

feelings.

What I'm told is that for some, results aren't seen until the 4th, sometimes

even 8th and 10th weeks. Everyone is different. One thing I know for sure

though...if you're sticking with the program, you WILL see results. Until

then, try to stay with your motivation and use all of your resources to do

that! Try the following for awesome inspiration!

and other links that you see!

I want to hear about the great results thast I know you'll see soon!

Good luck, Tara :-)

Tara,

I am with you on the up and down days, but don't worry YOU WILL SEE RESULTS.

That is as long as you follow the plan and from what I hear ppl get their

results at different times. Stay positive and good luck!

Tara,

Give it time - 14 days is so short in the whole scheme of things! I saw really good results with my four week pictures but I know a lot of people who didn't see hardly any results until 6 to 8 weeks and then it was like the fat melted off and the muscles were there!

Good luck!

Sara

Hi! Tomorrow will be my 14th day on the challenge and I'm really frustrated because I'm not seeing much change. I follow the plan pretty well: I work out at 6:15am on M, W, and F; I work out at 9:00 on T, Th, and S; I eat six meals a day (one serv. prot. and one serv. carb.); and I take my free day. Sometimes I don't wait the full two to three hours between meals but not often. Every once in a while I go out to eat with some people and I try to order the healthiest thing on the menu that is one serv. of both prot. and carbs. Am I supposed to see any results by now? My motivation goes up and down with the day and I want it to be up all of the time. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm in college so I don't have 100% freedom over my life but I have changed my schedule around so that I can do the challenge.-Tara

Hi

I don't think anything that you've described is a reason not to do CBT with

Micheal. I think it's agreat idea to ask the Dr. why not. It could be that

the doc doesn't have CBT experience as not all of them do. Good Luck and

hang in there. I always try to remind myself that if I find OCD

frustrating, it must be even more frustrating for my daughter.

Lorri,

Maybe you could work out an agreement with him that you'll let each

infection (viral or bacterial) wait a specific amount of time (5-7 days)

before antibiotics are prescribed. Also, maybe you could ask him to culture

each infection (time consuming & expensive) before anything is prescribed.

The culture would take the guesswork out of it. Waiting 5-7 days would give

you some idea of whether or not it was a virus and expected to run its

course.

Those are the best ideas I can come up with. When Autumn's sick, I

generally give it a week before we go into the dr. If she's not better &

seems to be getting worse, I can usually tell it's bacterial & we need

antibiotics. My ped is confortable with this time frame & always asks me

how long we've had these symptoms before we come into the office.

Ray, mother to Tabitha (age 6), Autumn, age 4 (IgG Def., asthma,

chronic sinusitis, and allergies), and Duncan Avery, 8 months

Does anyone have any ideas on how to convince my doctor that when we go to

the doctor the infection might seem to be viral but it will turn into

bacterial?

I feel the same way. Graham had been sick since thanksgiving and every

week we went back to be re-evaluated and all they would say was, " it

still looks viral " . And so many times the lab work, although not

horrible, indicated a high white count (bacterial?). What can we do?

Lorri,

I wish it was an easy answer. Both of my boys are immune compromised

and have blasts (leukemia cells) in their marrow, so our doctors are

overly cautious with everything they get. They assume is more

sickly than ph b/c he also has CVID, as well. Can your doctors

do a CBC with a diff to determine what's going on? Our docs do CBCs

and that can tell them more-- depending on the number of segs,

bands, total WBC, etc etc they can more accurately decide.

Just a thought-- we have to do a CBC w/ diff every tiem S or J gets

a fever w/o any symptroms b/c of the blasts and the possiblility of

them transforming into leukemia. BUT it is a good way for them to

tell if something is viral or not-- i.e. if the counts come back and

it looks bacterial, they give the bosy IV antibiotics... if it looks

viral we go home and wait.... and yes they get a lot of secondary

bacterial infections from viruses... I usually wait 10 days after the

symptoms appear adn bring them in to check. If they dont; have the

signs of bacterial infections, we hold off on the antibiotics b/c we

don;t want them to get resistant ...

Last week went to the ped to be checked b/c he had been sick...

his ears and ewverything were clear-- that night he got a temp of 105

and had an ear infection... but he has also had that happen w/o any

bacterial infection..

I'm rambling-- basically it is a roller coaster ride... UGH...

wish I could help!

turn into bacterial? I can never count on my doctor. Sometimes he

says it looks viral but here is an antibiotic just in case and then

when I want to count on him saying that he says wait 4 or 5 days to

see if it is viral or not!! I am so frustrated.

I did the same thing and ended up signing up under a new email address. When

you sign up again for Upsndowns, will give you a choice which addy you

want the posts sent to, so you can still use the old addy to send & receive

Upsndowns. You just need the new addy & password to sign on to . AND don't

forget them. is SUCH a pain!!!

You can set up a free email account lots of places. My server lets me have 4

accounts if I want. I never use my extra acct. for anything but logging in with

Hope I explained this OK!

Jenaka,

I am sorry to hear about all this. It is terrible

what these kids go through. Haven't the docs checked

to see if there is another ulcer? Why does he have

blood transfusions? I am sorry if you already talked

about that, I missed it. I am praying that everything

comes together and that the docs will take care of

everything. I know waiting is a very very hard thing

to do.

You always have a friend here. My prayers are with

both of you. How is he feeling today?

Hi everyone I have a question. Since taking Baxtra I get such bad water

retention that it's about two to three pounds built up. Is this good or bad? I

called my doc but hasn't called back yet so i thought I would come to my group

friends.

By the way I have read the mail for today and I feel so bad for many of you that

I am including you all in my prayers.

I had the same problem after my " free " day this wk. I think it's

just water wt from too much salt/bad carbs. No way could we have

eaten over 6000 cals! Ignore it and keep going.

a,

I'm pretty sure you're not gaining two pounds of fat from one free

day, it's more then likely water weight. I could be totally wrong on

this, but I believe for you to gain two pounds, you'd have to take in

something like an extra 3000 calories over the number of calories

your body needs on a daily basis. So you'd have to be consuming

something like 5400 calories. Not to mention, I'm sure you're fairly

active, even on your free day, and you've built muscle from lifting,

so you're body is still burning calories, even on your free day.

Making it virtually impossible to gain 2 pounds of fat in one day.

Maybe it would be better for you to do your weekly weigh ins on

Sunday morning, or whatever day you have chosen as your free day.

This way you will have an accurate idea of how much you're losing in

a week, and not freaking out by that scale weight, which we all know

LIES!!!!! Also, are you measuring weekly? For me, seeing the inches

getting smaller, even if the scale isn't moving, is very rewarding.

Hope this made some sense. Good luck and stay positive!

I think you are right. I have started drinking tons of water in the evening

of my free days, then I " pee like a racehorse " the next day. Seems to flush

the extra sodium and junk out. I am getting more and more scale shy. I

gained 2 # this week but waist went down and inch, pictures looked better

and I can zip the jeans I couldn't get on last week. I think it's better to

focus on the positive things we see rather than scale weight. Try writing a

list of the positives. I have noticed my nails are stronger and thicker and

the acne I have struggled with since my teens is even improving. Pimples at

39 yuck!

Unless you really enjoy frustration, don't weigh yourself right after free day.

EVERYONE gains 1-4 pounds of water the day after free day. That's normal. :-) It

will be gone and then some 3 or 4 days later. If you want to save your sanity,

weigh yourself once a week, the morning of free day, before you've had anything

to eat or drink. That way every time you step on the scale you'll have a full

week of clean eating behind you.

Here's an article that explains it all:

Why the Scale Lies

This happened to me just last week, actually. I was so worried

about gaining fat because I had to skip 3 workouts to heal. I even

had a lousy food week on top of everything. But when I weighed and

measured yesterday, nothing went up and I lost inches in three

places. Really listen to your body before working out again. Make

sure you are really ready, and even then you may want to lift a

little lighter to " test " your body. Also, stretch your back before

and after each exercise. This has helped me...and strech

periodically throughout the day. I hope your back feels better soon

and I wouldn't start your week over again. Just look at this as a

bump in the road you have to get over, not a stop sign. Also, use

your resting time to focus on your goals and picture yourself in

your new body. Bill says we all run into some adversity....it's how

we overcome it that makes us champions (or something to that

effect). Good luck and I hope you heal soon! -Tiffiny

I injured my neck during my first challenge, it hurt and was

extreamly sore. Of course there aren't too many weights you lift

with your head! But it took me sometime to get back into it, just

don't push it. If you have seriously injured your self talk to a

doctor.

If you think that you can work out, go very light for a while until

you can go heavier. At which point don't push it soo much. It is ok,

you will learn from this lesson.

I just remember when I did the leg press machiene for the first

time. Oy, very funny watching me leave the gym I almost fell off of

the curb. I was walking like a rat for a week. (crookedd?)

I guess that is why they call me rat woman..

Liz,

Until you can go to the foot doctor, I would suggest you go to

http://www.harrietcarter.com and order the phase 4 orthodics. That is what

my husband uses and he swears by them. I have regular orthodics that were

prescribed for me a long time ago. They really do make a difference.

The phase4 orthodics cost $20.00, but in my opinion are really worth the

$20.00. I have purchased two pairs for my husband (one for his work shoes

and one for his tennis shoes) a pair for my 12 year old and a pair for my 11

year old.

Hope this helps you.
