Gastroparesis

Actually, I believe that gastroparesis isn't all that uncommon for anyone who has any kind of GI surgery. GI surgery can also affect acid production, so if you don't have enough acid, your body can't digest the food as quickly. And then there's the possibility that the food had *just* left your esophagus and entered your stomach, too.

I know several of us have had the gastric emptying test, too. I don't recall if anyone else has been specifically diagnosed w/ gastroparesis, though.

Dear , Of course I can understand you being upset and surprised by the content of the letter. I find it very unprofessional of your GI not having discussed things with you upfront. Yet, I want to tell you that I myself wouldn't mind being tested! Maybe something is wrong with your stomach and don't we all hate doctors to ignore signals? What if he found undigested food in your stomach while doing the scopy e.g.? I don't think he'll have you undergo testings without any good reason! I don't know what test you are going to have. I am going to have a gastric emptying test today in 2 weeks myself. It's not a hard test to undergo. I think gastroparesis can be found with that test as well (am not completely sure on that one). I just need to have toast and radio active baked eggs, after that every 10 minutes X-rays are being taken and after a couple of hours I can go

home (might take a bit longer, as the food of course needs to reach the stomach first, wow, that's gonna be a laugh -LOL-...). If I were you, I would contact my GI and ask for his reasons and for his plans. Hi , They are going to do a gastric emptying test on me today in 2 weeks. You eat toast with baked eggs (radio active, yummie!). They make X-rays every 10 min. for a couple of hours as to see what your stomach does with the food (only the radio active food will be seen). Of course in my case they will have to wait untill the food finally reaches the stomach (which they can see of course) and as of there they will follow what happens next. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, I guess it is quite simple, but we'll see in 2 weeks... Love, Isabellakristinmari2 <kristinmari2@...> wrote: Hmmm, I was diagnosed with gastroparesis before my achalasia diagnosis. Right, I understand that. I ate radio active oatmeal! When they did

mine, I had to lie flat for over 2 hours for the scan. I read an

entire book. If you have achalasia and lie horizontal, I can't

imagine the food ever even reaching your stomach.

I guess that was my main concern.

I'm sorry I just don't understand the "logic" here. If an Achalasian or a normal human being is being timed to see how long it takes for this radioactive treat to go from the esophagus to the stomach why "torture" the Achalasian. We all know that a normal person can eat standing on their head, and food will find its way. Not us. I don't need "glow in the dark" food sitting for hours in my various body organs to tell me something I already know. Plus, while on your tummy it can start creeping up and detour to the lungs. No thanks.

I know that s Hopkins, in my time there, did a similar test (that I have talked about before) to measure the progress of "corn flakes" going from the esophagus to the stomach. It was a timed test, basically on an empty stomach (or should I say, on an empty esophagus). you eat the corn flakes laced with radioactive milk and the camera reads the corn flakes moving from the E to the S. After 10 minutes you drink a cup of water and more measurements are taken. After another 10 minutes its time for my favorite part, drinking a small bottle of soda, and watch everything else go down.

It also served as an excellent base line to compare results from one year to the next.

That might have been (in 1985) the first time I became aware of how effective carbonation was in my case to get the food down. However, when my LES shut down, nothing would get through.

Again, I just don't understand why, we eat sitting up, but people take this test laying down.

Hi , Well, you got me slightly worried here... For as far as I understood I am allowed to sit up and I don't need to lay down! I'll just wait and see. Having the -ectomy done will be worse, I guess -LOL-. I do want the test done (which will be impossible if I need to lay down). It's got nothing to do with them wanting to check what happens in my E. They want to check what my stomach does to the food, as to see whether I don't only have a swallowing disorder, but it's expected that I have further digestive problems. So when the food finally does reach the stomach, the stomach doesn't do it's job properly. It's important to know if that's the case and if so, it's important to know what exactly is the matter. , could we be confusing two different types of testings here? As I don't think I am getting the timed barium test (food movement from E to stomach), but I was

told to get a gastric emptying test (food movement from stomach to intestines). Love, IsabellaRICHARD <cynmark24@...> wrote: I'm sorry I just don't understand the "logic" here. Hello Isabella,

Just wanted to mention to you that I had the gastric emptying test

done a couple of years ago and my time was about 12 hours which was

severly abnormal. My surgeon felt I had the double whammy of the food

can't get into my stomach and once it gets there it just sits there so

when I had surgery I had the valves loosened on both ends. So, I had

a myotomy and a pyloroplasty. I was quite worried about the

pyloroplasty (loosening the pyloric valve) and asked her to adjust it

as little as she could. In any case, surgery was nearly 2 years ago

and was a huge success. I have no issues with anything at all now.

As for the test itself, I had to eat the radioactive egg sandwich

which I did, lay on the table for well over an hour, then when done,

threw up what was left of the sandwich in my E. Mind over matter I

guess to get it done.

Hi Liz, Thank you so much for this post!!! What you write is exactly what I guess will be the matter with me, what the docs think will be the matter with me. So, yes, having the thing tested is the only right thing to do for me. I am going for the -ectomy most probably (first open myotomy 11y ago, second one 5th January last failed). As they (I'll have 2 surgeons performing the surgery together) are already doing lots of "cutting and pasting" with my stomach during the -ectomy, they will solve my other stomach problem as well (after they found out what the problem exactly is). I am really really glad to read your positive post on how they successfully solved your stomach issue by the pyloroplasty. If I am lucky, I won't need this -plasty at all, but should it really be necessary I will keep your post in mind (and re-read it and re-read it -LOL-)! What symptoms did you have (feel, notice) regarding this stomach issue (so not the achalasia symptoms)? Thanks! Hi,

Together with my achalasia I have gastroparesis, just found out last summer.

We don't know whether I have it "by nature", or if it's a consequence of my surgeries.

The complaints indeed are somewhat similar to the achalasia troubles, though regurgitation, spasms and food stuck in the E. of course don't belong to the symptoms of gastroparesis.

The scan itself was no problem at all, the stuff I had to eat for it was -LOL-: imagine an achalasian eating bread with egg in front of a camera... They had to check how much I was allowed to drink with it, I was so happy I was allowed to drink as much as I needed.

For as far as I've been informed gastroparesis is treated by some kind of myotomy too. Instead of the E. muscle, the muscle (or valve, I am from Holland, don't know the right word here) is being cut. It's called a pyloroplasty or a pyloromyotomy, if I remember correctly.

In my case they think to resolve the problem with my upcoming -ectomy. My E. is being removed and so is half my stomach. As the other half is being pulled up and the vagus nerve is being removed, they (several specialists) think my gastroparesis problems will be lessened as well. Gravity is supposed to transport the food down to my intestines.

That's all I know about the subject, but I bet there is a lot more to it.

Love,

Isabella

Hi,Is anyone familiar with the condition Gastroparesis? After ruling out achalasia as my problem the doctor wants to do a "Gastric Emptying Scan" to rule out Gastroparesis. It sounds quite similar to achalasia. Thanks,Leila

My son has both conditions. Gastroparesis is slow emptying of the stomach, giving a full feeling after eating very little. This is how my son's problem started. Later he was diagnosed with achalasia which is more of a problem getting the food down to the stomach. At the time we were told that having the two conditions together were very rare but that does not seem to be the case. Cause unknown but it seems to be a problem getting the signals through the nerves to start the process of swallowing and stomach emptying.

Dear Group,

I really need some insight as to how to fix gastroparesis. It's a hereditary

chronic disease that results in partial stomach paralysis.  I read information

about the diet and I'd like some insight here.  The gastroenterologist wanted to

do a round of 9 pills a day, but he's flying blind.  I'm not comfortable with

this at all.  It would be a two week blitz of pills followed by six months of

'maintenance'.

Thank you very much for any insight.

WOW!  These sure look promising.   and the others who have GP - have you

heard of these or anyone who has tried them?

Wouldn't it be AMAZING if it completely worked as claimed?

Did a Google search on natural remedys for this ailment if any of you want to

look at these, if not, just delete.  I happen to believe in natural remedy and

this approach so, just delete if  you aren't interested.  Got laughed at , at

work and asked what do I do if

I need an antibiotic, thinking they would stump me.  I answered, take Shitake

mushrooms, a natural antibiotic with no side effect, lol, they wanted to know

where to find them. rofling
