Guest guest
Another source of the constipation can be from pain killers. If you've had a major surgery, some of the pain pills they prescribe can turn your stool into cement. Bill
Guest guest
Ahh the things we share on this listserve!! I poop well actually but they key is fiber. Fiber is good for the system so try to get enough of it daily. Also apples and oatmeal cookies, they do wonders for getting the downstairs working well again! Last resort is prune juice ughhhghgughhhg, I'd need to be pent up for a month before I'd drink that stuff! -
Guest guest
Dawn, You're right...we don't discuss this as often as it needs to be. Let's do something to change this! -- This topic is never discussed and who will ask someone else how regular are their BMs. -- This goes to show everyone, we are never too old to learn from others, and I just learned what can and does happen to some.-- Chiming in on what both Rob & Dee have said, bladder & bowel problems are often side effects from spinal injuries as well as problems dealing with sexual function. Blatant self-promotion: There is a place where these issues can be discussed. It's called Adult LPs (/group/AdultLPs) and I started it so we can have a safe, supportive place to discuss delicate issues. Membership must be approved only because I don't want kids there (we cover MANY topics and I don't want to play cop) and folks must have some connection to the community. I remember how scared and angry I was after my first lami when I lost function for 9 months. Laurie Benz introduced me to someone who had also gone through this and I remember how nice it was to have someone had been there. I vowed I would not keep quiet on this issue and thus Adult LPs was born. Come check it out. Ask those questions you've been wondering about but too embarassed to say aloud. We have many & varied topics so I'm sure you will find something you relate to. Rose

Guest guest
I know..such a lovely, but factual relating dwarfism subject. I too suffer with this problem after having several lower lumbar surgeries. But on top of that had also been dealing with acid reflux, of which I am told is due to too much of a gas build-up around my bladder and intestines, to where I couldn't pass it. Not being about to let it escape is often worse than the other..ok so that's tmi (too much information ) Doctor put me on Prevacid for the acid reflux and now I'm finding that it's helping me to stay regular. Diet does play a big part, more fiber like someone stated, but also daily exercise, drinking lots of water, and not going more than 2 days without going to the bathroom helps. And as much as I hate to admit it, eliminate or at least cut down on the chocolate. For more info on Prevacid, visit:- http://www.prevacid.com. There is also a list of foods on that site to avoid. Good luck on talking about such a sensitive subject! Ann > Another source of the constipation can be from pain killers. Guest guest
Maple syrup works....but if anyone can think back to all the foods that have had the adverse effect...ie....running to the bathroom alot...then just dig out the foods you know will get things moving. Just a suggestion. Karin R. Re: Constipation There is also LPsHealth to talk about this type of subject. You can click on their link at:- LPsHealth/. Guest guest
Thank you Karin, This would explain why my parents always had pancakes or waffles everyother day for breakfast when I was little, lol. Another possibility is Hot Cereals like Cream Of Wheat, Malt-O-Meal, Coco-Wheat's, Farina, and good old Oat Meal. If those didn't keep you cleaned out and running right, nothing would. Another secret, was my mother's Prune Cake, it may sound horrible, but believe me, it is one of the most delicious cakes you will ever eat in your life. Carrot Cake, Fruit Cocktail Cake are two others that will help you out. And tried and true, a good bowl of hot & spicy chili will work pretty much everytime. Then there is always Chop Suey, usually the vegetarian kind, Chow Mein, veggie delight too, and my favorite cure all, Hot & Sour Soup, that will not only clean you out, but it will kill a cold and open your sinuses too. And if all else fails, Rotor-Rooter, only joking people, lol. But I have had friends who became compacted, and it's not funny what you go thru to cure that, a day on an operation table and a weeks recovery in the hospital all because of not watching your diet, can be hell. One friend was hours from his death bed, all because of a weekend at the state fair, he binged on junk food and nearly died for it. My Great Grandfather's death was from compaction, so I watch myself because of it running in my family. Our systems are like a well oiled machine, stop oiling them and they will break down, care and maintenance and they will run forever. So be kind to yourselves, and don't be embarrassed to discuss this with your doctors, or amongst ourselves, because you may just end up saving your life by finding something out that you didn't realize. This isn't sexual, or an adult topic, but a biological function that we all need to survive with. So why be left in the dark, talk about it, please. It's life, without it you'll die. Guest guest
The fact that you think you have to run to a Dr. or visit an emergency room is EXACTLY why this needs to be discussed....so people DON'T tie up doctors and hospitals who could be doing say...oh...saving a life or two...with something that can be discussed and rectalfied....pun intended. I > suffered a lot fom this after both my other ops. > Thanks, Sheila. We care for adults with mental and physical disabilities, and chronic constipation is a major problem for them. Some ideas that we have found helpful - a non soluble sugar like lactulose (genlac or other names) 15-30 ml per day will help soften things up. - natural senna products like sennosides or equivalent are a softener and stimulant. - the 'geriatric mix'. Prunes, figs, dates with orange or apple juice to sweeten. Put in food processor until fairly smooth. 1/4 cup (more or less) per day. You can add anything else you want - apricots work well. - sometimes a fleet enema is necessary - the pre packaged ones available now are not really invasive and are very effective. I found it took 2 weeks of all of the above to get my system back to normal after the surgery, and I continued the fruit mix until I quit the painkillers. There is a drink calld citra-mag or something which almost guarantees to empty a person in about 20 minutes. It is often used before an examination of the lower GI, but I think it is too harsh, so we do not use it. As I recall, laxatives have four basic ways to function - you have to choose the effect you want. - fibre for bulk - lubricants to make things slide easier - softeners to hold the water - stimulants to get the muscles working Some ideas to consider Stuart
