I write for a site that has very specific guidelines about resources. We are not

allowed to use any of the " wiki " type sites as resources, neither the About.com,

nor the e-How. There are also a couple of others that are just reguritated

information, with no idea if the writers did their research or know their topic.

Since I write a lot of medical stuff, I look for mayo clinic, rxlist, pdfhealth,

drug.com and a the university-type sites for authoritative information.

I agree the Mayo clinic is especially bad when it comes to their "conclusions" on anything outside the mainstream big pharma, and their opinions on mainstream stuff are all bought and paid for. they cannot be trusted in my opinion. and drug.com LOL it is their whole business to promote pharma drugs how could they possibly be a resource for any real information other than the acknowledged side effects of any given drug.

a team of researchers from a university hospital wanted to know how a chinese herbal practitioner was so successful at treating acne.

As many as 100 people were often seen queueing outside his surgery and he had established an excellent reputation over several years.

The researchers visited him and discussed the treatments he used and he gave them some of the herbs to take away for analysis.

It wasn't long before they had isolated the active element and had set up trials to see

how it worked.

It didn't, They were puzzled. So back they went and told him what they had done.

He said;" that is not the way these herbs work." They work together balancing out reactions in the body. To isolate just the active element is to invite failure.

This is a typical Western approach to what is a complex art which takes many years to learn. Not unlike medical training.

How some people imagine they can learn this art in a few days training is beyond belief.

Not to say extremely arrogant.

Imagine asking a biochemist for example to explain the priciples of that subject in

a few hours?

Sadly many so called authoratitive sites and studies are paid for by you know who.

That's how we get such shining examples of"scientific and medical excellence"

as Vioxx.

I've not posted before, and am hoping not to overstep any boundaries here.

Three things come to mind for you to consider here, and I especially liked

Mike's thought to check for bowel sounds, in case there's some deeper problem.

1. Have you considered trying a different brand or formulation of your iodine?

There may be something specific to what you've used, that's causing problems for

just you, that may not be present in another brand/manufacturer or form.

(Specific ingredient, ingredient source or quality, manufacturing process, etc.

- many variables)

2. There is an energetic technique that can help speed or slow intestinal

transit time. Assuming that your organs are arranged in the most common

configuration (and some people are " reversed, " although I don't recall the term

for that), you simply gently pass your open hand over your abdominal area

(touching or not, either works) in a circular motion several times, in much the

same manner as pregnant women often do. Clockwise to speed things up,

counterclockwise to slow it down (NOT your issue!) A lot of people do this

unconsciously if they're in digestive distress, and it's bad news if you're

massaging the wrong direction. It's totally non-invasive, works for me, so

perhaps worth a try.

3. I read and respect a publication called Women's Health Letter, by Nan Fuchs,

PhD, who's a nutritionist. She's long been pushing healing the gut, as that's so

crucial for every aspect of health, including thyroid function, and absorption

of all forms of nutrients, meds, etc. Probiotics, digestive enzymes, dietary

adjustments had been her primary suggestions in the past. More recently, she's

been espousing an Advanced Bionutritionals product called " Integrative Digestive

Blend, " which has zinc, chromium, dig. enzymes, as well as Asian and Chinese

herbal digestive blends and digestive mushroom blend. It's supposed to be a

relatively short term (months) protocol for actually getting everything to the

point of functioning optimally on its own. I've bought it, but not yet used it,

so can't give personal comment. There may be other similar products out there,

but the concept makes a lot of sense to me.

If you try something like this, you'll need to closely monitor your response to

everything you're taking, as improved absorption would change the whole

landscape, including iodine, thyroid hormone levels.

Try taking the herbal complex, Long Dan Xie Gan Wan. It is a liver tonic. I am sure it will assist with the acne issue.

They say that constipation is a sign of not having enough iodine. Best to Google the symptoms of hypthyroid or what you condition is.

Hi:

After trying 'EVERYTHING' I found that flax works like magic. :-)))

I take the flax oil capsules. If seeds.....you must grind or they pass through without being absorbed.

Good Luck!!!!

Hugs and hopes,

Have you tried taurine? Many with constipation, and the other symptoms that seem

to connect us, are lacking enough taurine. Taurine helps digestion and liver

function.

had a more than occassional problem with constipation before biomed

and taurine is what i believe has helped the most.

I think that when Iodine is killing off toxins and pathogens the liver and

intestines can be helped to remove them with taurine.

Magesium peroxide seems to help, too. That is my favorite mag. Prior to learning

about that kind of mag I used mag citrate, which is a great deterrant for

constipation but it can have a cramping effect for many.

We have a 4 year old that has had not just constipation, but holding it in since

she was 3 weeks old. She wouldn't go #2 for almost 5-6 days, and 10 days was

her longest, while our 6 year old would go multiple times a day. Both were

breast fed exclusively. We've tried everything, and I mean everything, and been

to 3 different regular doctors, 4 nutritionist, and 2 holistic doctors. They

all said the same thing. After trying everything we tried, she is just holding

it in, and her body thinks it's normal. The way to fix that is give her

something that gives her diarrhea. Aloe Vera juice is one of the top things for

doing this. None worked even when giving her almost 30oz/day, until we found

" Aloe Farms Aloe Vera Juice. " It's the only Aloe Vera Juice that listed the

nutrional values that's in the bottle. They do this because it's been lab

tested to prove what's in the bottle. The taste is fine. We buy it at

vitaminlife.com. She now goes every other day without anything else, but it

took almost 30oz to get her there, now she drinks 8oz/day. We can tell that her

body is getting used to going naturally often now. Even at age 3, after having

to even use enemas, she would go 5 days, her stomach was bulging with lumps, and

she acted normal, and her body was normal, no stomach ache. Of course we dind't

feel comfortable with this at all, so we would not let her go past 2.5 days

before we started trying something, then usually ended up with the

enemas/suppositories. I would try the Aloe Farms listed above. We all use it a

little bit, and our stools are soft, and could be softer if we wanted. Chris

I have found that using (organic) flax seeds, ground in a coffee grinder (I use 2 tabsp) added to oatmeal for breakfast has done wonders.

The Om3 and lignans are very good also in flax.

We've been dealing with this as well since he started on any food at 7 months. WE have tried the gammut of natural things and seen several docs. We are now starting a gluten free diet in hopes it will help. Also giving iodine along with a slew of other things. One thing we were told is that the colons get stretched when the first episode of constipation occurs and that it can take up to 6 months of no constipation in order for it to return to its proper shape/size once stretched out. This can effect the ability to push anything out. Going with this theory we have been using on and off and now steadily for a year now. Everything else either did nothing except cause horrible cramping with excrutiating screaming fits, or did cause diarhea but with all the same agony. Miralax is not what I want to use, but so far its the only thing that has allowed him to go without pain. Anything he eats still takes 3 days to get through his system. We had done flax oil, ground flax seeds, some kind of bark whose name escapes me right now, senna, probiotics, CLO, epo, Natural Calm, you name it we've tried it. And the enema suppository thingys which were just horrible and didn't always work. He would still not go for 7 to 10 days, but be constantly grunting, growling and pushing his heart out with every diaper having a little liquid poop in it. It was never really hard or dry. We did enema and massage once after a 7 day spell, and while bicycling his legs he ushed out a roughly 18 inch long, 3 inch wide poop. Scared the crap out of all of us, and part of his intestine pushed out a bit and then retracted. That was when I gave up and gave in to the Miralax. He now has no pain, no constipation, but he has constant diarhea. Every diaper is filled with liquid poop. I know this isn't the answer. It has also been suggested he mave be lacking innervation in part of his colon and has difficulty moving bm past that pont of the colon. If that is the case then Miralax may be the only answer till he's much older with more awareness and can compensate for the lack of nerve endings. Right now I have stopped giving him Miralax for the first time while we try the iodine. I am reallyhoping this will be our miracle cure... But I am also going no gluten and have a thyroid test on the way in the mail to see if that is an issue too (as with myself and my husband). I share your frustration. We take a boat load of supplements daily and we spend a small fortune every month. We are re-focusing our efforts to follow a Traditional Foods diet (aka WAPF) as that can only help. Its been 4 days without Miralax and he stopped going 2 days ago :( So tomorrow I will try 2 drops of Lugols instead of one and see in 3 more days if that has made a difference. I wish you luck, and I soooo know where you are coming from - it is so frustrating!

I will definitely give it a try! I just worry that even if it works (and it would be soooo nice to find something natural that did) it would still be resolving the symptom without me knowing what the cause is :( Iodine sounds like a likely culprit - and I'd love it if this finally " fixed " some of our issues.

Thanks,On Sun, Nov 8, 2009 at 7:22 PM, crouth2 <crouth1@...> wrote:

Sounds very familiar, please try the Aloe Farms Aloe Vera Juice. Give him as much as he can drink, that's what we were told from an excellent certified nutritionist, and it may take up to 30oz. Put it in juice, water, or just straight if he'll drink it. Put it in the fridge, after opening, and use ice, it tastes better cold. There really isn't much taste, just like a slightly stale water. It may take an entire gallon, and weeks for it to really work, but maybe not. My wife took 8oz the first time, and it ran through her. Good luck, Chris

Three years ago, I had medications that affected my small intestine so that every bite felt like eating cut glass and dealing with severe IBS issues. Went on a blender diet of Standard Process Rice based shakes for 3-4 weeks to heal it. Took L-glutamate and probiotics to heal the small intestine which comes in bulk powder form and tastes like vanilla. It seems like these digestion issues may have a small intestine component. I was also tested for food allergies by a naturalpath and also by blood by IgA and IgE testing for couple of hundred which my insurance actually paid half of. End result was allergy to sugar, dairy and yeast. Naturalpath testing only found the dairy allergy and possibly onions which seems to have cleared up. Seems like it would be wise to find out if any allergies add to these difficulties that these small children are having. I also found that adding apples and figs from my tree were both soothing to my gut as it healed.  Pam

Also saw this in my inbox so will share.Ways chiropractic can help...DIGESTIVE DISORDERSA survey of 1,494 patients found that 22% reported digestive relief following chiropractic treatments, even though the majority had never mentioned digestive issues to their chiropractors.

Many of the spinal nerves that are affected by chiropractic manipulation control digestive functions. Patients who undergo routine manipulations may experience changes in their levels of digestive fluids, the speed at which food moves through the intestinal tract or the strength and/or frequency of intestinal contractions.

We’re often told by patients that manipulations for, say, neck or low-back pain not only helped their musculoskeletal complaints but also resulted in improvement in constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive issues.

Digestive problems need to be medically diagnosed first, but the most effective treatments involve an integrative approach, which can include chiropractic. I often get referrals from medical doctors of patients with constipation, colitis or irritable bowel syndrome.

Help for colic: A study published in Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that colicky babies treated with chiropractic cried about three hours less daily than they did before, compared to a one-hour reduction in those given the drug dimethicone, a standard treatment. The manipulations given to children are very gentle. Many have a reduction in colic after just one or two treatments. Look for a chiropractor who specializes in children’s problems.

Yes, I know what you mean. I always want to get to the root cause as well, to

fix that root cause, therefore strengthening the body towards optimal health,

and learning the root cause could be passed on to help others learn. I haven't

found the root cause yet either. I forgot to mention we also use chiropractors,

and have tried Standard Process, but didn't work either. I've read tons on the

internet, of children with the same problem. I've never came across the iodine

deficiency until I researched my thryoid issue I described in a previous post.

There is so much info on mercola, natural news, etc. that sometimes I just go

right past it, if I haven't had this issue, or it doesn't sound relative. But

this iodine thing is real, and is a big problem. I just wish it would be

simpler to take like a multivitamin with virtually no side effects, especially

for the little ones. I'll learn about though, and address beginning iodine

supplementation. Chris

Why not get your baby a QXCI scan to see what may be the root cause of the constipation? You can go to 's website at innerfocus.net.

Good luck, Chris>> We've been dealing with this as well since he started on any food at 7> months. WE have tried the gammut of natural things and seen several docs.

Two of my children had the same problem as infants. MY Ped told me that

children that young haven't learned how to use the sphincter. I had to give my

kids suppositories when they were infants to teach them how to use it. Once

they did, it was no longer a problem.

Now that Chris' child is 3 and going fairly regularly, she's probably learning

to use hers as well.

Hi

You might look into tethered cord, just to be sure. Constipation is one of the

signs. With tethered cord there is a neurological reason for constipation.

With TC there can be dimples just above the anus, turned in feet (one foot more

than the other), toe-walking.

Many pediatricians know little about this syndrome. My pediatrician said that I

shouldn't pursue this with my son, no MRI or surgery. The urologist said ds

didn't have neurogenic bladder and that I shouldn't do surgery. My son had

surgery three weeks ago and they found a very tight filum (cord). The only

symptoms he had were turned in feet and a possible bladder signaling problem.

Before this, he showed hypothyroid symptoms, low temps, but now they are normal.

Its amazing! I still give him a bit of Iodoral for detox.

This might not apply to you but it would be wrong for me not to share.

There are some great to join where the people know more than the

doctors.

I LOVE hot peppers, Lida -- at least I think that is what you Brits call

chillies? Right now I've got some Thai peppers on hand, along with serrano

peppers and a jalepeno or two. They certainly have some excellent medical uses,

and I know they are known for lifting mood. (The magical ingredient in all of

this seems to be the capsaicin contained in their inner membranes -- not in the

seeds. however, which is why it's ok to remove the seeds if you like them a

little less hot.) I'm interested to hear that they also help with constipation.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi ,

Wow,I've never had so many replies to a problem and it would be constipation wouldnt it! Lactulose has already been suggested, but didnt know where to get it from or what it was,but now I do!

I tried linseed and had to stop as it gave me terrible stomach aches, but what works for one, doesnt work for another so may give that a try too!

Best wishes sharon

Hi Sharon,

could you perhaps ask your gp to prescribe a bottle of Lactulose Liquid ? This will soften things up and get it moving...... A natural alternative is Linusit golden linseed which is full of omega 3 and high in fibre ( you sprinkle it on your food/cereal etc).

I don't believe that coconut oil (or any oil) causes constipation. Most of it is

absorbed before it gets to the bowel. Reduced water and fiber content do however

cause constipation, and so can bowel dysbiosis. I'd look to these things for a

possible answer. Inulin, a soluble fiber, improves fecal bulking and bowel

habit, and it also ios known to restore a bad bowel ecology that might be

causing the constipation. One should urinate about 2 quarts of water daily to

avoid dehydration. I would expect any bowel health group to give the same answer

(dysbiosis as opposed to coconut).

all good,

Duncan
