Guest guest
> As it is hard to find calcium citrate in chewable or liquid at the stores (Wal mart does not have it) - I was asking if people could use the gels and squeeze out the liquid. Or could they buy tablets and just crush them. Just trying to figure out the most cost effective way to supplement the correct form of calcium for these patients. I have sources online, but assume they are probably more expensive? Could be wrong! Anyone have opinions about crushing tablets or using gel type pills? Guest guest
Bariatric Advantage has calcium citrate. You need to take 2-3 per day. Each calcium has 400 mg per tablet and there is 60 per container for $13.95. They come in mint, chocolate and cinnamon flavors. They are lozenges. Our patients love them!!! 800-898-6888 or www.bariatricadvantage.com Alie <nutritionut@...> wrote: Regardless, it is calcium carbonate, which would decrease absorption rates. Guest guest
Heidi, Our program recommends 1500 mg of calcium citrate per day. We recommend both the pills as well as liquids and chewables for those that have difficulty with swallowing pills. We recommend Citracal and the new Citracal Creamy Bites (but watch the sugar - would not recommend pts take all three creamy bites at one time = 12 g sugar). We also recommend the Lifetime liquid from Vitamin World and the chewable calcium citrate from Bariatric Advantage. UpCal D is also on the list of calcium options that I give to patients, but our patients rarely use it because it's a little more difficult to find (I think it has to be special ordered). Hope that helps, BethHeidi Gianaris <Heidi.Gianaris@...> wrote: How much calcium citrate is being recommended after gastric bypass? Guest guest
I agree with Steve's criteria but find that sometimes is complicated for patients. I also encourage them to look at the % RDI met to tell. The soft chews say 50% each chew so that helps you know that 2-3 per day gets the 1000-1500 goal. Tropical Oasis says the 2 TBSP meets 50% so then you know they need 4-6 TBSP per day. Guest guest
We teach our patients to look at the % Daily Value to determine amounts on labels - add a zero and you have mgs (DV based on 1000 mgs per day). Tropical Oasis calcium + magnesium has a serving noted as 2 tablespoons and a % daily value of 50% = 500 mgs. Same method, but easier. Guest guest
You really can't absorb more than 500mg at a time. Ca Citrate should be taken in 500mg doses not less than 2 hours apart. You also don't want to take Calcium with your vitamin if your vitamin has iron in it. You have to take that 2 hours apart as well or the calcium will stop you from absorbing iron. ALL WLS patients should be taking a quality multivitamin at double doses. Something like Centrum is good, one tablet twice daily. It comes in a chewable tablet as well for adults. Centrum adult chewables I *think* have iron so you wouldn't want to take it with your calcium. Centrum Silver (comes in a chewable) does not have iron and can be taken with calcium. Guest guest
Absolutely. Due to our limited quantity of food we are not getting the same nutrition as a person using their entire stomach. The bioavailability of vitamins is not great at all. Depending on the brand you are only going to absorb 10-40% of the vitamins anyway. Just remember, if your vitamin has iron in it don't take it within 2 hours of taking calcium. I take Centrum twice daily, calcium three times daily, reflux meds, Vit D once daily, B Complex (it replaces my old energy boost - caffeine), and an aspirin.Vit D... this is a really important issue. MOST people in the US today are short on Vit D. It can cause extreme sugar cravings, bone and joint pain, all kinds of things. Interesting thing about Vit D is that it isn't really a vitamin, it's a hormone. They have also changed what they believe " normal values " are for lab results. Most labs still show 30-50 as being in normal range. It's since been changed to 50-100 is normal. I keep mine at about 90. You can order a test kit and check your own Vit D levels here:http://www.zrtlab.com/vitamindcouncil/Without Vit D you aren't going to absorb Calcium. I keep all my supplements on my laptop so I can't forget to take them throughout the day.On Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 12:55 PM, Cheryl B <toughgirl126@...> wrote:  Is it ok to take a double dose of ALL multi vitamins? Log ALL your food and water on www.TheDailyPlate.com. Yes, it's hard to be honest with yourself but nobody is going to see it but you. You have to face the calories you are consuming each day. Start the five day pouch test tomorrow. Two days of protein shakes, two days of soft proteins, one day of dense protein. Day #3 is probably going to be the hardest. This is to get you off ALL carbs. Then on day #6 eat only good carbs, veggies, beans, etc. Here are some examples: http://www.obesityhelp.com/member/midwesterngirl/Do you like shrimp cocktail? Use that Mango & Peach salsa, add shrimp, put it in a fancy glass, a sprig of Cilantro on top. When I do that I can only eat three shrimp so for me it's a meal and less than 100 calories. You don't have restriction so make a bigger one. No protein bars, they are loaded with calories and carbs.Make small goals, don't look at the big picture, make small 5-10# goals. Post on message boards. A friend and I opened up an old board that is owned by someone else. He couldn't get it going. I asked him if I could have the forum because a bunch of my friends were banned from lapbandtalk.com because they confronted the owner on some lowly things he was doing. I only reopened it so we could have a place to chat. Here is the link: www.wlsfacts.comDaily, please post your daily menu. ;o) I am going to look at it EVERY SINGLE DAY. And if you don't post your menu I'm going to call you and ask you why you didn't. Don't worry about quantity of food, focus on quality of food. You can't control portions right now without restriction. I'll post my daily foods as well and I'll get to do it too. So you won't be alone. It will be similar to this: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/4072566/Whatcha-Eatin-Today-EveryOne/Go through your kitchen and get every white carb out of there. Nobody in your house needs them. You have to do this for you and your son and your husband can easily become diabetic without being obese. Post on any WLS board daily, read how others do it, ignore newbies, they are on a WLS honeymoon high. Focus on vets at goal. Depend on them, lean on them, ask them question, get a daily dose of support. There, now you have a plan, a starting point. You're also a runner, use to have short hair (blondish).. Are you on dailyplate? If so look me up and I'll let you see my profile. Guest guest
Did you use to have the band? I know I know you. Anyway, I went out and got ALL my vitamins, broths(miso)soups and stuff for the next week to "reset" my body.. I didn't realize just how far I had fallen. But this is a life time change not just a weight loss change and somewhere I forgot that... Do you know where I might find out about increasing my vitamins and how it might affect my nursing our baby?Thank you SO much..Donna Bean Sent from my iPhoneOn Dec 1, 2009, at 1:10 PM, Bipley <Bipley@...> wrote: I used to run but I don't have blonde hair, it's long and brown. ;o)You are free to post your menus anywhere you wish. Guest guest
My calcium citrate chewables are 1,000 mg each. Now what kind of sense does that make? If we can't absorb more than 500 at a time, why would they make them in 1,000 mg chewable tablets? should I cut them in half? > > > > > > > I just read on another post that you are supposed to take it > in divided doses.
