My husband had a thr. His incision was covered with a special plastic bandage so

he was permitted to shower as soon as he came home (day 5).

I had tkr with the same kind of bandage over the incision and was not permitted

to shower until 24 hours AFTER the stitches come out. Effectively 15 days.

Different surgeons.

My surgeon is paranoid about infection and prohibits anything that has even the

slightest chance of introducing bacteria to the wound.

It's not that hard. I have those baby wipe type tissues and use them every time

I use the toilet. Then every morning I filled the sink and had a sink bath.

Every few days my husband scrubbed my back for me.

You are moving around so little that you never work up a sweat or anything and

frankly, for the first week you could care less about ANYTHING, just zonked out

on drugs.

kusudo,

i hope a successful THR and an early heeling.regarding the shower preparations;

if it is a bath tub(banyo) you can buy a special medical  turning  chair which

can be fixed on the banyo where you can set on and turn it to enter your legs in

the banyo, and you  enjoy taking your bath while setting .you won't need grab

bars  . baby wipes may be useful .

My THR is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 3rd, and I am preparing now for

home-coming.  Did everyone have grab bars installed in the shower before

surgery?  Did you use a special " shower stool? "    I'm planning to take " baby

wipes " to the hospital, in case I can't take a shower there.

kusudo,

i have read several e-mail messages which say that the anterior approach for THR

heals much quiker than other approaches because as i understood no muscles are

cut and stiched. so i recommend you to enquire and insist on the anterior

approach. i was unfortunate because a lateral approach was adopted for my THR

six months ago. i am still slightly limping with some pain during movement. see

my other message regarding preparations for the shower.

best wishes for you

 Mustafa

Hi There!

I did not have grab bars but used a bath chair. My shower is in the tub so

I had a chair with an extended seat. That worked very well for me.

Peace,

Jackie

I know this is rather a personal question but it has me

concerned. In numerous articles that I have read it says

that you cannot bathe for about two weeks after hip

replacement. Is this accurate? BARB in Florida

I had no external stiches though there may have been dissolving stiches lower

down in the incision. The top/outside was glued and steri strips added. No

restrictions on getting the area wet...just not to scrub.

sounds logical to me........I imagine that holds true to most hospitals and

nursing facilities.....

a breeding ground......get out and back home as soon as you can........BARB

Bathing

my surgeon forbids a shower while in hospital.

He feels they are too dirty, wet, moist. Perfect for bacteria to gorw, and

he also says they only get a wipe over by the cleaning staff, not scrubbed

well..

thats just him of course.

My OS said the same, forget the nursing home/rehab home and go home. I

wanted to go to the rehab home but the one I wanted was full. At home I washed

off sitting on the commode taking a sponge bath. The hospital gave me a

bottle of Soothe and Cool with Aloe a no rinse shampoo to clean the incision

then I applied a fresh bandage. I did that until the staples were removed.

They also gave me a package of Ready Cleanse cleansing wipes. I had a hard

time finding 10 inch bandages, the normal drug store did not carry them,

had to find a hospital supply store and then they were only 8 inches long.

The Hospital surgery staff gave me some extra when I told them I could not

find the large bandages. My OS said OK for baths when he removed the staples,

2 weeks post op.

Brickey, the suggestion of washing while sitting on the commode is the best

idea I have heard of yet.....thank you so very much for passing on your

method.

I can get my hair washed in the kitchen sink with my sprayer but the other

end

concerned me. I will have to see what my OS and hospital staff recommend

about changing the bandage. I have a very handy husband who will help me

with things like that. He is not an official nurse but has nurturing

abilities that

far outshine mine. He has nursed me many a time and once even saved my

life with his care and persistence. I don't think I could be in any better

hands.

Thank you again, Brickey........BARB in Florida

Hi folks!

Thought I would share my experience. Had my right THR in March 2010. Had

surgery on a Tuesday, anterior approach and was in the hospital for three days.

The incision was glued with a few dissolving stitches to hold it. This was

covered with steri strips and a bandage. The catheter and IV came out on

Wednesday. Thursday and Friday I took showers at the hospital. I went straight

home from the hospital. No way was I going to a rehab place. I was very capable

of dealing with my personal needs once I got home and everything worked out

perfectly fine. I am having my left hip fixed on October 2nd and plan on doing

the same thing this time.

I not saying this is for everyone, as everyone's situation is different. Just my

experience.

Best of luck on you recovery!

Sorry folks, I just realized that I stated in my previous post that my upcoming

surgery is on Oct. 2nd.

The surgery will be on Monday, Oct. 4th.

Thanks, and have a great night!

  • 5 months later...

thanks bee for answering my questions about washing one's hair. You answered

every three to four days one should shampoo to allow the natural body oils to

develop on the scalp and hair. how often would you recommend bathing and

washing one's face. If not using soap daily, do think its ok to to shower and

rinse daily? I tend to do this after skin brushing. Please let me know

thanks
