> Should people with thyroid/adrenal issues limit crucifurous vegetables?

+++Hi Debbie,

The claim that people who have thyroid issues should limit cruciferous

vegetables is because they contain oxylates, or oxalic acids. They claim

oxylates in foods interferes with the thyroid's ability to uptake iodine.

However:

1) Oxalic acid is a colorless, organic compound that occurs naturally in plants,

animals and in humans. Organic oxalic acid is an important element, even

essential, to maintain and to stimulate peristaltic motion (movement of the

bowels, etc.) in our body, and your own body produces oxalic acids.

2) The main reason for thyroid issues is because the adrenals became

overstressed. Overstressed adrenals cannot handle normal thyroid hormone

output. The thyroid senses this and automatically lowers its production to

protect the adrenals. Consuming oxylates in foods is not related to this

process. Taking more iodine is not the solution since lacking iodine is not the

cause, which can cause more health issues, i.e. mineral imbalances, overstressed

thyroid, etc.

3) Of course toxins make all of the body's cell membranes rigid/stiff which

interferes with thyroid and adrenal functioning, and it means cells are not as

able to intake hormones, nutrients, water, etc. - see this article:

http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/cabout1.php

3) Iodine is a mineral, which is only needed in trace amounts. Its absorption

and utilization, like all minerals, require " mineral activators " that Dr. Weston

Price writes about in Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, i.e. omega 3,

vitamins A, D & E, saturated fats, etc., along with other minerals, vitamins,

protein, etc. I don't think oxalates in foods would lower the amount of iodine

uptake if those mineral activators are in the diet and/or supplements.

All the best, Bee

Wow, thanks for all the info! That is very good news. I've been kind of afraid

to ask

the question for fear you would tell me I couldn't eat my favorite vegetables.

Thanks a million!

Debbie
