Guest guest
had the nissen surgery when she got her g-tube. She came through it like a champ. She was 10 months old when she had the surgery. Believe me I am so glad we got the surgey done because of illnesses. We can do treatments and just stop a feeding if needed. I do not like to do that but I can stop a feed then do a cough. I do not have to wait for an hour if she needs a cough. She recovered nicely from the surgery. About pain... after the surgery she was really fussing after she woke up . I know her g-tube hurt her for a few days but I do not know about the nissen. Jeanna --- haviano <haviano@...> wrote: > Hi- > I have a 18 month old with SMA2. Guest guest
Jessie, I am 2 days post-op. I had surgery on 9-20-06. I am having some gas pain. Everytime I drink anything it happens and hurts up in my chest and gurgles. I hiccup and burp. Is this normal? It hurts a bit. I don't consider it reflux. Guest guest
, what you are experiencing is normal. Gas pains usually can be helped with GAs X. Should go away in a couple of days. Sip slowly and try to avoid swallowing air while drinking or eating. As your stomach heals, you will have less discomfort with this. I rembember having a very noisy tummy for a few weeks. Guest guest
Yes, Dean was breastfed, threw up a lot of that, and then was on a prescription formula, but I cannot remember the name. I have had such a wild crazy two years since then, I am starting to forget when he did what, like sit up, start to crawl. In addition to having him being constantly on fever watch, I take care of my mother and last winter, I took care of a dying sister, as well as handling a divorce. So, to think back about what his formula was seems to hit the ends of my memory banks. Dean was on liquid Zantac syrup and, yep, it seemed to end right around when he was really eating food and off the formula. That would make it around 9 months, as our pediatrician suggested taking him off formula and on to cow's milk, which he was fine with, and then and there I eliminated bottles, and stopped giving him baby food. _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Amy Scala Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2007 11:08 AM Subject: RE: Reflux Yes, my had acid reflux really bad when he was born. Guest guest
HI, That is reallly bad for you. I think it can cause erosion. It is caused from either a too tight band or eating to close to bedtime. Try not to eat at least 3 hours prior bed and drink a glass of water before you sleep to fluxh your pouch. If it does not resolve with these simple steps you should consider going to the Dr. Best of luck Kira ---- lindelou <lindelou@...> wrote: > Hey group, > > The last week or so I have been waken at night by gastric reflux. Guest guest
Hi Lindelou: I was banded in 9/06 and I have been experiencing reflux also for about 6 weeks. Initially mine was so bad it would shoot up into my mount and wake me from a sound sleep. Burned like fire and was very uncomfortable for some time afterwards. I have seen one local doc who has put me on a med that I take a bedtime to elimintate it. It helps but it is treating my symptom not curing me. I have been on that med now for over 4 weeks. Some of my reading says it can be caused when you may need an unfill. I don't think that is my case because I can eat normal portions on some days. Some days I have difficulty. I find that fruit really sours my stomach. I emailed Gaby and Dr. A would like to see me. I have been on line for two days trying to find flights that coordinates with their transportation schedule and my work schedule and I'm not having any luck--unless I want to spend $500+a hotel room. What is happening with these flight costs? I ahve a regular appointment with my PCP in about ten days and will ask them for some Prylosec or Nexum. A few hints that I received from the doc is: 1) Raise the head of your bed by at least two inches (but a brick under the legs of the bed. 2) Do not eat anything for at least 2 hours before bedtime. 3) sleep on two or more pillows. For some reason it helps more when I sleep on my left side. If I sleep on my right side the reflux is worse. Whatever the cause, the reflux issue is a serious one. At its worst, it is a precursor to esophogial cancer. Work with your doctor to get it under control. I am not convinced that it is all band related in my case as I have had this problem other times in my pre-banded life. I hope you feel better soon. Guest guest
lindelou, I think you sound too tight. If this continues even for another day or two, I would see about getting a slight unfill. How long ago was your fill? Being too tight is much more hazardous than being too loose. Guest guest
Hello and Lindelou, I have been much better with my acid reflux since banding. I had a horrendous hiatal hernia, which Dr Aceves sewed up, and since the surgery I have had no reflux whatsoever, night or day. One reason is that I can never over eat. If I do, I get an excruciating pain in my left side, and who wants that. I do not know why I get the pain where I get it, but I will ask Dr. A when I go for a fill in November. The point is, whichever part of your body is telling you that you are overeating, listen to it. If you do, you won't reflux. I have been sleeping on two pillows for years now, so I did not make a change in my sleeping habits. Nor do I stop eating 3 hours before bedtime, not because I would not prefer to, but because many times I do not get home from work before 8or 9 pm and I know that if I do not eat something I would not be able to sleep, I would be so hungry. I eat a piece of fruit, like a juicy pear and I go to sleep blissfully, sleep like a log until the alarm goes off, stagger into my clothes and had off to work again. I work 10-12 hour days daily, using my head and fingers. My weight loss is slow, because I have a hard time fitting even 1/2 hour of walk at lunch into my schedule. I am not complaining, I get paid well for what I do. Do not overeat, and your reflux will go away. Good luck, Margaret On 10/23/07, <ldccox@...> wrote: Hi Lindelou:I was banded in 9/06 and I have been experiencing reflux also for about 6 weeks. Guest guest
HI. I AM LIKE MARGARET I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH REFLUX OR INDIGESTION SINCE MY BAND, BUT I DO KNOW THAT WHEN I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS IF I ATE HIGH CARB MEALS (WHITE FLOUR, SUGAR ETC...) THAT MY REFLUX WOULD BE ALOT WORSE. I LIVED ON MAALOX FOR SEVERAL YEARS PRIOR TO MY BANDING. JUST REALLY WATCH WHAT TYPES OF FOODS THAT YOU ARE EATING FOR SUPPER AND ALSO THE QUANTITY. SOMETHING ELSE THAT SOMETIMES WOULD HELP MINE WOULD BE TO DRINK A SMALL GLASS OF MILK BEFORE I WENT TO BED. DON'T KNOW IF THAT WOULD HELP YOU OR NOT BUT IT MIGHT BE WORTH A TRY. Guest guest
I had my first fill in April...(here, not Mexicali) I had supposedly 1.5 cc's put in. I started throwing up, went back for an unfill. She took out a couple of cc's. I came back home, started again. Once in a while I could eat a couple of bites at night, but most of the time it would come back up. I had a burning sensation that was so painful. I went back and she said she would take out all but 1/2 cc to give my body a chance to heal. I never quit throwing up, but saw no point in going back, since there was " nothing " to take out. Finally my son got tired of me being sick and in pain so he took me to Mexicali Friday, Oct. 19, thinking I would need the band removed. Dr. Campos was very kind, checked me out, and I still had 2.5 cc's in. He took out all but 1 cc, gave me a prescription for Nexium, a liquid diet for a while, and guess what?? I feel SO MUCH better. Now I will apply for that passport, because I know where I want to go for my fills! It was so easy, relatively cheap even with the trip, and my confidence in the Drs there is just tremendous. By the way, I have lost 50lbs since Feb., but maybe would have lost more if I wasn't just eating soft foods and drinks... I am happy with the 50, but hopefully will lose 40 or 50 more. Good luck, and go get checked where you had this done! Vaughn __________________________________________________

Guest guest
First, I think we should always talk to our own doctors about medical problems. That being said, some find that they get reflux after banding, some find that it goes away after banding. Some have no change whether they had it or didn't have it. My general suggestions are to NEVER eat within two, preferably three, hours of bedtime. To me that also includes any liquids other than water. Then there's nothing in your pouch, and not much in your stomach, to back up. Second, have you changed what you're eating? Many have more problem if they're dealing with food that is acidic or spicy. I know that I can't eat things that are as acidic or spicy since I've been banded. Just another change to deal with. Third, I'm not a fan of antacids, but they work for many. Same for some of the other anti-reflux meds, prescription or otherwise. Fourth, have you gotten a fill lately? Do you need one? Are you too tight? Fifth, stress can be an issue for many. Sixth, and a big one for me, is sinus drainage. If my sinuses are unhappy and draining (allergies, cold, etc) that greatly increases any chance of reflux for me (which I rarely have) and the sinus drainage makes me much more likely to get things stuck, or make me unable to eat. Hope some of those ideas help. Let us know more, including when it started, what you're eating, and any other changes in last few months. Not many things start up without some sort of cause, even if we can't always figure it out. dan Wednesday, February 27, 2008, 10:47:15 AM, you wrote: > I was banded on Feb. 11, 2005 and have lost 70 pounds since then. Guest guest
That " waking in the night coughing " is a classic sign of reflux, and is very dangerous. This should never be allowed to go on for months. we can easily inhale the very caustic stomach acid and get a terrible aspiration pneumonia. we need to take immediate steps to stop the reflux, which is causing damage to the stoma, esophagus, teeth, oral tissues, sinuses, middle ears, and more. It can cause asthma, ear infections, sinus infections, oral infections, and more. . First, be certain you're following the bandster needs to prevent reflux: - no solids within 2-3 hrs of bedtime - no meds right at bedtime (see the next line) - one hour before bedtime, have a glass of water only to rinse out the pouch. Take any " bedtime " meds here. Take any meds possible long before this time - during the day if at all possible - eliminate or reduce the reflux triggers -coffee, alcohol, all citrus including strawberries and kiwi, greasy or spicy foods Until you resolve this, please also elevate the head of your bed 6 inches on books or blocks,. Just adding a couple pillows is not enough. This will help you avoid the pneuminia until you find the reason for your ne reflux. If these do not totally stop the reflux within a couple days at most, you need to see our band docs quickly and get a fluoro. Possibilities include too tight, band slip, dilated pouch, enlarged esophagus - and all require treatment to prevent more serious problems. You didn't mention that you had a new fill right before this started, so i will assume a new fill is not part of this. if we have a new fill and then reflux starts, it means the fill is too much and weneed some out. Good luck - please be seen VERY soon. sandy r .. > > I was banded on Feb. 11, 2005 and have lost 70 pounds since then. Guest guest
Karyn, (who is 5 now, will be 6 in June) had reflux as a baby and was on Zantac. I don't remember when we took her off of it, but I think it was in the 18 month range. At 4 1/2 years old the reflux came back with a vengance - makes me wonder if it was there all along, just silent?, but I'm not sure. Anyway, she would walk around the house and just spit up. I told my pediatricians that I thought it was just time she see a pediatric GI, and they backed me up. They probably would have been willing to treat the symptoms, but at 5 years old I wanted to see a specialist - especially if this was something she was going to deal with for the long term. As well as spitting up, she was also waking up sometimes at night in horrible pain and crying every hour or so. As soon as we saw the GI we put her on 15mg of Prevacid and it helped, but a couple months later on he also did an endoscopy to check for esophageal damage to make sure it was under control. That was great because he was also able to take some biopsies to test for the h.pylori bacteria in her stomach (came back negative), and a biopsy to test for celiac at the same time (negative as well) to make sure we weren't missing anything else in regards to her pain. The endoscopy did show damage in her esophagus from the reflux, an indication that it wasn't completely under control, so we increased her dose to 30mg, and the expectation at this point is that she may have to be on it forever. Recently there have been a few nights she has woken up crying with the same kind of reflux pain she used to have and in looking back we had given her something to eat like pizza which was probably just too much for her. I've gotten complacent about that thinking that the Prevacid should cover everything, but I think I need to be a little more careful about what we feed her. Anyway - if I were you I'd look into seeing a specialist. Our GI says that any child who doesn't outgrow the reflux by their second birthday should see one. Hope this helps, mom to (10), (7), (5 DS) & Tyler (2) Reflux Adena was diagnosed with reflux/GERD when she was just a few days old. She was on Reglan and Prevacid until almost a year old and then she was just on Prevacid. We tried to wean her off Prevacid at about 15 months but the reflux just became worse. She will be 3 in a few weeks and I am wondering who else has experienced this? She stayed with my mother-in-law on Thursday night and Friday morning and missed her dose and she spit up on Friday night. It seems if she misses just one day's dose, she will spit up. Our pediatrician says that it is time-release and should not matter if she misses one dose. He also said she should outgrow it when she started walking. She still spits up 2 or 3 times per month when she receives Prevacid daily and will definitely spit up if she misses a dose. Should I take her to a pediatric GI doctor? What has been your experience? I want to be ready when I take her for her 3 year checkup later this month. Thanks, Karyn Mom to Adena who will be 3 soon!

Guest guest
This is a bit late but... My son is now 8 and is on prevacid 30mg solutabs twice a day which is quite a lot. He was starting to throw up again frequently so we increased his meds to twice a day. He was on once a day but since is recent growth spurt, he is now on twice/day. We will try to wean him down to once a day and zantac effervescent at night (25mg) when needed. I also was told he would outgrow his gerd. It would stop when he started walking (which he was 2 1/2 years old - it didn't). If I miss a dose, its 50/50 whether he throws up. We do see a pediatric GI doctor. also had an endoscopy last year, which was normal. His doctor did show me a spot that he thinks was caused by motrin. only had motrin twice. The GI doctor said to only give him tylenol. He is also checked for celiac disease frequentlyand it comes back as negative. is small for his age, 41 lbs and 43 inches tall. He is continuing to grow nicely on his growth chart along his own curve. He is very active. I think he just has a bad case of gerd that is not going to go away!!!! Let's face it...in Pensacola which is about 3 hours away the cost is $165 for office visit, $185 for fill or unfill and $800 for fluroscope!
