Guest guest
It seems to help, but it's borderline anecdotal. As Dr. Kay said, it really needs a Phase III trial. However, I think there is little downside. If it works for you, fine. Even if it's nothing more than the placebo effect. Just my opinion. I have been reading books on evidence based medicine, so....... In a message dated 6/7/2010 11:42:54 A.M. I sometimes think that if this and the Acor site had not educated me as to this disease, I could now be dead. When the Doctor in 06 wanted to treat or the one in 08 wanted to treat, if not for the education here, I probably would have treated. But it was obvious that I didn't need treatment at those times when looking at the facts. Guest guest
It would be interesting to put forth test cases and have 10 oncologists suggest treatment modalities for them. The variability among the various opinions might be shockingly high. As such, very healthy skepticism is the order of the day. This is not to impugn anybody, just to show how imperfect is the knowledge extant and how tremendously important it is for each individual patient to be his own best advocate. Guest guest
I think that WOULD be interesting. I've seen it in my own case...........in 5/08, an onc at Hopkins wanted me to start low-dose rituxan..........I didn't do it............in 4/10, a different onc at Hopkins said I didn't need tx. yet. Goes to prove that medical tx. is an art, not a science. Still a crap shoot, any way you slice it. Guest guest
I could disagree by saying it is not an art, either. Art is no more than a person's interpretation. Or, probably no doc has a monopoly on treatment modality. Every practitioner has to analyze the data, do we want docs playing hunches? If hunches are correct, then perhaps the subtending science is flawed. I'd say that some sort of statistical curve is followed and docs will be wrong at times, right at times. I believe no doc maximizes treatment successes. If they did, we'd see more success and less bum results. When one's immune system is hammered by treatment, can we call this success or merely the "best" result under the cirumstances. Or neither? There's more pressure on the patient than the doc. That is a cost to me of about $8 a month. I have no idea if they have helped to stabilize my counts. But I do know that my counts went from 90,000 to 318 thousand in about 18 months after my DX. Since I began the green tea, my counts seem to have stabilized. I finished RF in July 05 and my lymphs are now this month at 128 thousand. The green tea (I think) along with the RF has given me over five years of no symptons. My lymphs have been as high as 193 thousand since treatment, but now seem to be moving in the right direction. I had my regular appointment with my Hem/Onc in June and he has scheduled me to come back in 6 months although I do stop in Quest every three months to get a CBC and they fax him the results. , I have no idea if the green tea is making a difference. It seems that we are all so different as to how we react to things. I eat broccoli every day, could it be that? Or as my favorite person that posts, said, the Chinese probably put heavy metals into the green tea making process. So maybe someday we will find that heavy metals reduce lymphs. I thought sure that I would need treatment in 2010, but it is unlikely now with that last CBC. My lymphs percentage has also dropped from a high of 93% to 75% now. Again, I have no idea what is going on in my body and why what I do would not work for everyone. Some get RF and suffer from multiple infections. I haven't had the flu since getting the RF and only a couple of minor colds. I only remember the CLL when I open my emails or planning a Docs appointment.I have the 17P deletion and according to statistics should have been dead a few years back. But thanks to the internet, Dr. Hamblin, Dr. Furman, , and so many others, I am still around. My Hem/Onc simply says to do whatever I am doing as it seems to be working. Guest guest
Thanks Sue and for the excellent links about flouride in green tea not being good for the thyroid. I don't know what I'll do when it's 30 below outside and I'm wanting something nice and warm to drink. Grrr. When I checked out the link you sent Sue I read several articles by Dr Derry- one was about low production of breastmilk due to hyopthyroidism. Well now that mystery is cleared up for me!!! I used to drink til I floated - and then piddle it all out- it just seemed to bypass my breasts- now I know why! That was 30 years ago so I guess this thyroid has been giving me grief for many years! Guest guest
Kathy, My story is the exact example of the breastmilk problem. With my first 3 children, I now know I was struggling with my thyroid, but only knew to complain about being tired. The other symptoms I figured were just part of getting older. I struggled with my milk supply – had to eat lots, drink lots, sleep lots – 14 hours a day!- in order to have enough milk. Any tiny slip and I was running dry. My doctor, who is VERY natural and works hard to help all patients breastfeed, didn’t recognize the low milk as thyroid related, and figured of course I was tired, I had small children and was pregnant. J During my 4th pregnancy I read an article in Good Housekeeping of all places, listing symptoms of hypo and hyper thyroid problems. Said if you check off 4 or more, see your doctor. I checked off 8 and ran to my doctor demanding a test. When I read off my list of symptoms, he did the test but also immediately started me on Armour, saying he would use the test to see how high we needed to go. By the end of two weeks on Armour I felt like a new woman! And after my daughter was born, low and behold, I didn’t struggle with my milk supply anymore! How simple of a solution. Now it was years later that I discovered iodine and that makes me feel way better than just Armour alone. I still need the Armour (actually I take the Nature-throid brand now), but I feel better than I ever did, and don’t mind still taking it. Donna in IL Thanks Sue and for the excellent links about flouride in green tea not being good for the thyroid. Guest guest
Yes, but Anti-cancer and antioxidant value of teas may be countered by high fluoride levels. White tea is safer. Consuming a variety of beneficial foods and beverages is best. http://www.suite101.com/content/high-fluoride-levels-in-tea-a30219#ixzz11aNB8WYzSue--- On Wed, 10/6/10, Bbircie@... <Bbircie@...> wrote:From: Bbircie@... <Bbircie@...>Subject: Re: Re: green teaiodine Date: Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 8:22 AM Does white tea have fluoride as well? Guest guest
Giving up tea is one of the hardest things I've ever done! I used to drink 8 to 10 cups of organic, naturally low caffeine tea, but it was obviously still high in caffeine because I'd get caffeine detox if I went too long without a cup. (Now realise part of that is my chemical sensitivities due to Hashis). Getting down to 5 cups felt like an achievement. Then I'd get down to 2 cups and then go back up. I finally got to 1 cup and sat at that for weeks before cutting it out. I don't really miss it now, which surprises me. I drink dandelion coffee and liquorice tea now. I once would have said there was no comparision, but I have got to really like them so I hope they're fine. I put the cream off the top of the milk into the dandelion coffee. Thanks Sue and for the excellent links about flouride in green tea not being good for the thyroid. Guest guest
Not sure where the proof is that there is flouride in green tea. I met tea expert yesterday. He imports tea from all over the world and knows everything there is to know about tea. I asked him if there was flouride in green tea. He said it would be impossible unless it is steeped in flouridated water. There is nothing in the processing of tea leaves that would involve flouride. So drink up! > > > > > > > > > > Hi Kathy, here's one link: > _http://poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/html/green_tea___.html_ (http://poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/html/green_tea___.html) > > > > > > > > > > the thing with the flouride is that it competes (replaces) one of > the iodine > > > > > atoms in the the T3 and T4 for proper thyroid functioning, along > with bromide, > > > > > which of course, is a whole other story. > > > > > > > > > > best to drink water only. > > > > >  > > > > > Konstantine > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > > > > From: wally.kathy33 <wchopee@> > > > > > _iodine _ (mailto:iodine ) > > > > > Sent: Tue, October 5, 2010 5:36:20 AM > > > > > Subject: green tea > > > > > > > > > >  > > > > > I just read 's post that green tea has a lot of flouride and is > not advised > > > > > for those with low thyroid. Guest guest
Actually,if you google, you will find much information on how tea plants absorb fluoride thru their roots from the soil/water in the regions where tea is grown. I love tea, black, green, white; but sadly they are all high in fluoride because of this factor. Guest guest
It's not the processing, tea takes up fluoride from the soil and water. Please take the time to actually find references instead of blinding telling others to drink up.TEA For USDA data on fluoride levels in US tea, click here (pdf file). "Appropriate regulation of the fluoride content of tea commodities should be an urgent matter for public food safety policy." - Cao J, et al. (2004). Fluoride in newer tea commodities. Fluoride 37: 286-300."Instant tea, one of the most popular drinks in the United States, may be a source of harmful levels of fluoride... The researchers found that some regular strength preparations contain as much as 6.5 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride, well over the 4 ppm maximum allowed in drinking water by the Environmental Protection Agency." - 'Potentially harmful fluoride levels found in some instant tea'', Washington University School of Medicine, January 25, 2005."Another important source of fluoride ingestion is tea...[T]he fluoride content of tea has been found to range from 0.1 to 4.2 ppm fluoride, with an average of about 3 ppm." - Levy SM, Guha-Chowdhury N. (1999). Total fluoride intake and implications for dietary fluoride supplementation. Journal of Public Health Dentistry 59: 211-23."[M]ost of the iced teas studied contained considerable fluoride concentrations. If infants ingest larger amounts of them because of their sweet taste, there is a risk of uncontrolled overdosing as a result of additional fluoride intake from other sources at the same time. " - Behrendt A, Oberste V, Wetzel WE. (2002). Fluoride concentration and pH of iced tea products. Caries Research 36(6): 405-410. "The average fluoride concentration of infusions prepared from decaffeinated (green & black) tea in this study is 3.19 ppm and ranged from 1.01 to 5.20. This is unexpectedly higher than caffeinated tea and such a difference is statistically significant. If decaffeinated tea were prepared with optimally fluoridated water, the fluoride content would be increased by 1 ppm and would reach an average of 4.19 ppm." - Chan JT, Koh SH. (1996). Fluoride content in caffeinated, decaffeinated and herbal teas. Caries Research 30:88-92. Guest guest
The claim is not that they add fluoride to tea in processing it. The claim is that tea takes up a lot of fluorine from the soil, water and air. Here is a write up at the Linus ing Institute that gives approximate fluoride content of various teas: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/phytochemicals/tea/#components Of the four common pest control chemicals used for teas, Dimethoate, Quinalphos, Dicofol, and Deltamethrin, only Deltamethrin contains a halogen, and that is bromine, not fluorine. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi Kathy, here's one link: > > _http://poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/html/green_tea___.html_ (http://poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/html/green_tea___.html) > > > > > > > > > > > > > > the thing with the flouride is that it competes (replaces) one of > > the iodine > > > > > > > atoms in the the T3 and T4 for proper thyroid functioning, along > > with bromide, > > > > > > > which of course, is a whole other story. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > best to drink water only. > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > Konstantine > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > > > > > > From: wally.kathy33 <wchopee@> > > > > > > > _iodine _ (mailto:iodine ) > > > > > > > Sent: Tue, October 5, 2010 5:36:20 AM > > > > > > > Subject: green tea > > > > > > > > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > I just read 's post that green tea has a lot of flouride and is > > not advised > > > > > > > for those with low thyroid. Guest guest
I didn't even give up tea because of the flouride - I wasn't aware it was a problem - it's because I have adrenal issues and tea has caffeine in it.On Mon, Oct 11, 2010 at 12:48 PM, Kathleen Blake <kathleenblake@...> wrote: Actually,if you google, you will find much information on how tea plants absorb fluoride thru their roots from the soil/water in the regions where tea is grown. Guest guest
Hey I have a friend that will not drink tea from a tea bag either, she says it was they have scraped off of the floor. She will only drink expensive loose tea from an expensive pot. Does anyone know a good source to buy a reasonably price of that kind of tea pot and good quality loose tea. If that friend visits she brings her own tea and special cup. I have tasted her loose tea and I do agree that it tastes better. Carolyn In a message dated 3/3/2011 8:06:52 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, kareningotham@... writes: It's my understanding that quite a few people have a hard time digesting green tea (I'm not one of them). As to the contents of tea bags, they're usually the dregs of the tea industry--they consist mostly of what's called "fannings" and dusts, from low-end tea, and they usually don't taste very good. However, since there'll undoubtedly be other things in your beverage with flavors that predominate, you should give it a try. I'm SERIOUSLY into tea but I also brew my own kombucha and there's absolutely NO WAY I'd use expensive tea (not to mention loose) for that--I use a 2-to-1 ratio of Celestial Seasonings green-and-white tea bags and Lipton. There are some applications for which expensive ingredients are a waste of money and good product. Green Tea I saw that stash now has green tea that is finely grounded into powder that you simply stir into your beverage. I was curious as to if anyone has ever tried emptying the contents of a standard green tea bag into a vitamix smoothie. I would certainly think it would grind it up to a fine, undetectable powder and would guess it to be pretty healthy since you would consume the leaves and just not steep them. Wonder if it may cause stomach upset or anything though.Any thoughts?
