Guest guest
Hi Marcy, As far as I know there is no such thing as coconut water in a can or other container " straight out of the coconut " ...they have ALL been treated to be able to go in the container. This includes water or milk.So the best thing is to find a wholesaler who can put you onto a distributor and get them fresh. This is what I have done. There is some sugars,so i will be using " water kefir " and this uses the sugars and converts them into other valuable things for the body. Guest guest
Hi Marcy! I have kept my own liver in good health (from taking liver damaging medications) by taking milk thistle powdered and in my O size capsules. I buy it bulk and capsulate my self. I take one a day which is about 250 mg. The milk thistle heals the liver and helps it slough off the diseased/dead tissue. I have diabetes and high blood pressure so I have to watch what I take also and I want to try out the Coconut oil if I can get enough others input on the good effects. Guest guest
Bob: I took Milk Thistle for quite some time and was told by a Master Herbalist that worked for a big herbal company here in Canada, that this is not something you should take indefinitely. It can unfavourably change some of your Liver enzymes. She said the rule with herbs is 9 weeks on and 3 weeks off. An email I sent to this List a few days ago, will tell you all the good effects that I've had. Bonnie Re: Coconut water Hi Marcy! Guest guest
Thanks for the info Bonnie!! I do not take anything " forever " because I do not want my body to gain a dependence on it.After about a month off the Diflucan I stopped the milk thistle and only take it randomly anymore. The same with all my herbals except the Body Balance + which I take 2 tsp twice daily to cure my GERD. Guest guest
I read that post too an followed the link. Its not supplied in my area. Does anyone here know of a good supplier? I've been reading about coconut water an I was confused about the difference myself. What I've always called milk is the water from what I've read. I'd like to try it. Wilderness Family is a supplier but they are out of stock. The young green coconuts I thought were the best an were used to make water kefir. Now I'm not sure. I'd also like more information on this. Guest guest
Coconut water is the liquid that is inside a young coconut. Im not sure what defines the age of the coconut but it is fully formed but the shell is not hard and brown yet .You can also drink the water in a mature coconut but it isnt as sweet. Guest guest
Hi The Coconut (the fruit) both mature and young contain a liquid.. A clear liquid. That is the Coconut Water.. it can be as clear as water.. no cloud. Again that is Coconut, the liquid that comes from the Coconut fruit. Now the coconut also contains a " meat " . It is white. The Milk is extracted from this white meat. In all instances it involves processing this meat with REAL water, the strained liquid is Coconut MILK. I do not know any instance of Coconut milk involving processing the Milk with the Coconut " Water " .. although I do not see why it could not be.. One somewhat OT question. I do not use dairy at this point (will re-introduce them later), so I use Coconut Milk for everything that would have used " Milk " .. I am presently using an organic Coconut Milk in an aluminium can. I would like to stay away from all things Aluminum... I do find Coconut both young and mature in my locale but don't have the time to prepare the milk from scratch.. Does someone know a good way to get Coconut Milk, NOT in aluminum cans? What about experiences with the Coconut " Cream " I have read about? Frantz --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make your homepage. Guest guest
I did some more research and yes the coconut water is from young, immature coconuts and as I have 2 trees very full of them, I might have to try some young ones instead of going just for the meat!! I just ran to the health food store and found several brands of coconut water to choose from - both were good, but I did find when researching that some have way more sugar and sodium than other brands. Guest guest
SeaLady, Im really jealous that you have 2 palms !! if you want more juice in them and for them to grow bigger, water them on a regular basis, also mulch. A palm will only give you what it can get from the soil. Most coconut palms are not 'culivated' but are left to grow wild. There was someone on this forum who did the above and they grew nearly to the size of a basket ball..so they said...as compared to'normal' unattended 'wild' ones. Im not sure about the numbers that would result, but again a palm/tree will give more if its looked after...same as any plant. If you have 2,let one alone and pamper the other and see what happens. That would be and interesting test. .
Guest guest
Hi Frantz, Yes, there is a great way to get coconut milk without the can - coconut milk powder. But you have to have access to a Jamaican or Caribbean or African market or have a grocery store with a really great international foods section. I buy a brand called " Maggi " out of Nestle Food Company in Jamaica (there is one in Trinidad/Tobago as well). You mix one packet with 3/4 cup of water to make one cup of coconut milk. According to the package, the mix contains: coconut milk solids, maltodextrin, milk, sodium caseinate, and mineral salts. I have never checked on the web to see if this is sold on Nestle or Maggi's sites, or if there are other brands. I just pick this up at my local Jamaican grocery store (which took me a very long time, and lots of asking around to find). Good luck. Guest guest
Yes I am lucky to be able to grow coconuts here - as I live in Florida, if there is not enough rain the sprinkler system can be turned on, they get fertilized and mulched along with the mango's banana's, mulberries, citrus and passion fruit. Most coconuts don't grow wild here - it can be a just a little bit cooler than they would like sometime, but I am lucky that I live out on the island so I stay a bit warmer - I'm only about 40 miles south of the Kennedy Space Center; an hour or so south of me you will find them growing all over though. One of my coconut palms is a Malaysian dwarf, the fruit is oval and smaller, but very prolific - the other one is big and round like a basketball. I am going to crack a few open tomorrow..any suggestions as to the best way to get the meat out of the shell??? After getting it open I have found putting the 2 pieces in a low oven of about 200 degrees helps; as it cools it will separate just a bit from the shell making it easier to get the meat out. I am still experimenting with temperature and time in the oven; suggestions please.. Guest guest
Hi ! May I know your purpose of removing the coconut meat of kernel from the shell. In the Philippines, we intend to extract coconut milk, we usually use a grater (manual or mechanically run); as fresh kernel, further crack the split nuts into several pieces and with aid of a table knife insert it between the kernel (meat) and the shell. It should be separated without difficulty. Putting it (split nuts) after draining the water and let stand at room temperature for at least 30 minutes to an hour) in the oven for sometime (first hour at 40 -50 degrees celsius, then at 60 - 75 degrees for the next 2 -3 hours may make removing the kernel fro the split nuts. But this is not fresh kernel anymore but dried one (partially) with still about 20 % moisture. The coconut copra (dried coconut meat at <12 % moisture) is the form from which the coconut oil is usually extracted as cooking/edible oil. The virgin coconut oil (VCO) is extracted from the fresh meat/kernel via the coconut milk, either by fermentation/centrifugation/wet pressing. Hoping, this helps. Guest guest
Hi, I bought my coconut cream concentrate from Tropical Traditions, I didn't see it on Viviendo's product list, but I am going to write them and see if they also have it when I order my oil next time. It is very good in many recipes, I use it when making my nut butter - it has a good consistency and add a little bit of sweetness. Guest guest
Sev, I like to just eat the coconut meat, which seems very difficult to separate from the inside hard shell. In the past I have pried and pried away with a knife and end up just getting small little pieces. When I did use a very low heat, most likely due to some shrinkage from a loss of moisture it will them come off the shell in large pieces - often without the brown rind which is nice especially if you are going to use it in recipes. Most of the time I just eat it with the rind and all which is not that tough, good roughage probably...lol When you said below that the meat between the kernel and shell should come apart without difficulty did you leave the split nut to sit for awhile??? Because mine definitely do not separate easily. Also when you said you just use a grater to get the coconut milk - do you grate while the meat is still in the shell?? Is there a certain special grater you use?? SeaLady Hi ! May I know your purpose of removing the coconut meat of kernel from the shell. Guest guest
Mr Fife, thank you for this information. Where do you purchase the water? thanks. Pat Bruce Fife <bruce@...> wrote: Coconut water is becoming enormously popular nowadays. Ten years ago when I was doing research for my book “The Coconut Oil Miracle”, I learned about coconut water. I began to keep a file where I would put interesting information about coconut water for future reference. When I published “Coconut Cures” in 2004 I included some of this information. By 2007 my coconut water file had grown so big I decided I needed to enlarge the chapter on coconut water in “Coconut Cures.” At first I thought I would add maybe 5 or 6 pages, but as I began writing these 5 or 6 pages turned into 20 and I realized there was too much incredible information I wanted to share. The obvious conclusion was that I would have to write another book, this time devoted entirely on coconut water. I spent much of last year researching and writing this book. I must say, coconut water is just as incredible as coconut oil AND totally different. Coconut water has its own unique health benefits completely separate from coconut oil. Coconut water is essentially fat free, so its health benefits are not associated with medium chain fatty acids (it contains no lauric acid). Its benefits come from a combination of vitamins, ionic minerals, amino acids, enzymes, plant hormones, antioxidants, and other phytonutrients. You may have heard that coconut water has been used for intravenous (IV) therapy. This is 100% true. I’ve gathered dozens of studies from around the world documenting this fact and describe some amazing stories where coconut water IVs have saved lives when commercial IV solution had failed. Studies from the Philippines, Thailand, India, Uganda, Nigeria, Indonesia, New Zealand, Britain and the United States have confirmed the effectiveness of IV coconut water. The simplest way to use coconut for IV therapy is to insert a needle into the soft “eye” of the coconut. Tubing from this needle goes directly to another needle which is inserted into the vein of the patient. The coconut water goes straight from an unopened coconut into the bloodstream of the patient. I have pictures of this set-up in my book. I know of no other fruit or vegetable “juice” that can be injected directly into the bloodstream like this. Coconut water is so compatible with the human body it is now being marketed as a “natural” sports rehydration beverage. As a rehydration beverage it is FAR superior to Gatorade and other commercial sports drinks. I’ve got studies to back this up. The benefits don’t stop there. Coconut water helps dissolve kidney stones, protects against cancer, helps balance blood sugar, provides a source of ionic trace minerals, improves digestion, feeds friendly gut bacteria, helps relieve constipation, reduces risk of heart disease, improves blood circulation, lowers high blood pressure, improves blood cholesterol levels, helps prevent atherosclerosis, enhances immune function, and possesses some remarkable anti-aging properties (certain components of coconut water are now being incorporated into anti-wrinkle face creams). My new book is titled “Coconut Water for Health and Healing.” If you would like to learn more about it, go to www.piccadillybooks.com <http://www.piccadillybooks.com/> .
