Guest guest
Hi Bee, About 3 years ago my husband went to a clinic in Reno that specialized in Lyme disease. Part of his 6 wk protocol was Vitamin C IV's. However, the first time they gave it to him, the veins in his arms swelled up enormously. They said it was an allergic reaction to vitamin C and they administered something else in it's place (can't remember what it was now). On your site, on page that talks about help for healing reactions it says, " Take extra Vitamin C - take 4,000 mgs when symptoms first start to appear, and take 1,000 mgs every hour you are awake until symptoms subside or bowel tolerance is reached, i.e. you get loose stools or diarrhea. " My husband hasn't taken vitamin C since then because he's worried about the reaction he had to the IV's. But I keep reading on your site about how important it is. What would you suggest he do? Can you be " allergic " to vit. C? Thanks, a M.

It is impossible for any Human to be allergic to vitamin C, so I wouldn't suspect the vitamin C itself unless they didn't use the correct kind, administered it too fast or mixed the formula incorrectly. The correct formula and instructions on how to administer it is from Orthomolecular Associations or Physicians. +++If your husband were truly allergic to vitamin C then any foods he ate that contained it would also cause that reaction and it is nearly impossible to eat foods that do not contain vitamin C. Can you be " allergic " to vit. C? +++Like I wrote, it is impossible to be allergic to vitamin C. Human bodies do not produce vitamin C like some other animals do, so we must get enough daily in order to be healthy, otherwise we get scurvy. Scurvy symptoms include lethargy, followed by formation of spots on the skin, spongy gums, and bleeding from the mucous membranes. Spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized. As scurvy advances, there can be open wounds, loss of teeth, jaundice, fever, nerve problems, heart disease, etc. and it can eventually cause death. +++Since your husband is scared, he would start with small amounts of the kind of vitamin C I recommend, i.e. 250 mg 3 times a day with complete meals, and slowly increase it every 5 days. Of course vitamin C helps the body heal and detoxify itself so he may get some detox and healing reactions, but they are not allergic reactions - see this article: http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/heal11.php All the best, Bee
