Guest guest
Heya Mel!! Big *hugs* and best of luck in your endeavor!! :-) I was just studying my pharmacology (like a good girl!! LMAO) and came across something that I thought you might be interested in (if you didn't already know it!) If you have been taking Glucophage (I can't remember if you were or not), then you really need to be taking a good vitamin supplement right now. One of the side effects of Glucophage is that it prevents absorption of B vitamins, of which folic acid is one. So take those vitamins, girl, and build up that folic acid for the benefit of your soon-to-be wonderful little one!! :-) *hugs* 1 Melinda Sprague wrote: > Hello. > I know that this is going to raise alot of eyebrows, and I dont wanna hear > any crap. Guest guest
Wow, NO i didnt know that. Isn't it nice that the Dr.s always seem to FORGET to tell paitents something! I had no idea. ACK that is awful. Ya im sure he'll give me some prenatal vitamins, well thats of course if he takes me seriously. ( which i have doubts about) He will yank me off the glucophage and the avandia too. But thats to be expected. Im not sure about the Rynatan. But I read, and was told. that i could stay on my Welbutran. Which is a good thing cause i dont know how i'd be without it. Went to a part this weekend. Babies all over the freaking place. It was hard. I was having a coughing fit too. Started on Friday that i was having hard time breathing again. Coughing alot too. Course we couldnt stay long at the party cause the host and most of the hosts family were chain smokers and that really Irritated my throat and nose. SO im still coughing. Not sleeping too good, but tommorow i go BACK again to see the Allergist. So maybe he will have more answers. oh and i get to tell him that the nose spray that he gave me a perscription for is NOT covered by insurance and now the other stuff, Rynattan ( some crazy spelling like that) is NO longer covered by the insurance. Its funny too, cause i have 3, count um!, 3 insurances and NOT ONE will pay for EITHER of the meds. SO im screwed on that one. Oy Vay! Night wendy and thanks for the info, sucks that i didnt know cause ive been on it for like over a year now. Guest guest
Mel, Just another side note...if your doc doesn't want to give you prenatal vitamins (most doctors I know won't prescribe them unless you're already pregnant), you can buy good prenatal formulas over the counter. And they are usually not much more expensive than regular vits. *hugs* 1 Melinda Sprague wrote: > Wow, NO i didnt know that. Guest guest
Hmm ok. I think the Dr.s might be missing something here. Prenatal. Lets break that down. Pre= before. Natal. IM guessing that has to do with being pregnant. So that would be BEFORE pregnancy! Dang they sure are dumb. But for some odd reason im not the least bit surprized that they dont like to perscribe them. lol Melinda At 01:21 AM 4/9/01 -0500, you wrote: >Mel, > Just another side note...if your doc doesn't want to give you prenatal > vitamins (most doctors I know won't prescribe them unless you're already > pregnant), you can buy good prenatal formulas over the counter. Guest guest
Well first off we wanted a baby. i know there are lots of older kids that would like to be adopted but I already had my sisters kid living with me and decided id like to start out with a " New " kid. My sisters was already nasty, snotty and rude. ( she was 15). That kind turned us off. Plus my husband and I talked it over and both agreed that we didnt want to raise an African American child. Way to much stress for both of us. So, the odds of getting a WHITE BABY in america are pretty much NIL unless you got big bucks. The waiting list on a baby is several years at LEAST. To adopt over seas, where there are TONS of babies just waiting. Some of them even dying from lack of attention, ie failure to thrive. YOu have to have the home study and all of those OTHER things I had stated. I wish i could just hop on a plane and bring home a baby from say Japan or Vietnam. But the $20,000.00 i stated earlier is pretty much the LOWEST fee i saw. Its pretty sad. Just anybody can have a baby but you gotta have bucks to adopt a child nobody else seems to want who may be dying. :-( Its disgusting, the entire state of the world and how they treat their children. Babies all over the dang world just WAITING. Of course sometimes you run into getting a child who is severly disabled mentally and physically because of the failure to thrive thing. Cause nobody holds them, or talks them or nothing. Its sad. Makes me want to cry to think that right now there are THOUSANDS of children waiting for a home, but because i dont have $20,000.00 i cant help them. ok enough about this. Ill go nuts if i think about it too long. Guest guest
Melinda, I take prenatal vitamins even though I'm not pregnant. I've been taking the prenatal vitamins for exactly 1 year (yesterday was one year since I started taking them) and since taking them I've had some improvement in my hair besides that it's growing even faster than before but this time healthy. It's also helped my skin and nails. One of my health problems is a hormone condition that causes a lot of acne sometimes. Well, b/c of the prenatal vitamins I don't get many pimples. I had tried regular multi-vitamins during the last several years and the brands that I tried weren't as good as the one I had about 5 years ago. But when I got older I had always wanted to take prenatal vitamins but didn't know if I could b/c of just what said about being pregnant. One of the things that I learned from that Pregnancy and Birth Forum that I gave you is that you can take prenatal vitamins as soon as you start to try to get pregnant. Let me know if you need the link to that list again. Take care sweetie. ===== Kristy http://www.geocities.com/sokokl/kristyspersonalpage.html __________________________________________________

Guest guest
, I think that many, many of us in the group have had the same thing happen. This use to happen to me much more often in the yr or two after my surgery, but I am 12 yrs post. I know that often nothing works for me. AND I know how awful it does really feel. I know that after a bad " whatever it is pain " my stomach would be sensitive for a day or two. Many times I just cried in anguish or I would try to make myself throw up. I am very sorry you are going through this. I wish I could help more. I am sure others in this group may have suggestions. I had my gallbladder symptoms right before I was diagnosed with A. Had it taken out and still had the same pain...hence my darn diagnosis with this crazy disease. I wish you much luck. I really do. Guest guest
Hi , As Dawn mentioned, there are a lot of us that suffer through unbearable spasms. Mine begin in my jaw, roof of my mouth, my chords in my throat tighten, my face turns red. Usually, this only happens when I have waited too many hours before eating. I seem to have much better days when I constantly have something in my esophagus waiting to go into my stomach. I have had two open myotomies, and I have had years to adjust to coping through several tiny meals each day. I drink a lot of milk also. I have also found that if I sprinkle Betty Crocker Butter & Herb instant potatoes in any cream soup, I actually get to feel full. I just finished eating some shaved ham with one slice of melted Swiss cheese for lunch. That will fill my esophagus for about two hours. I am very fortunate to work from home. I would never be able to keep up my eating routine in a normal work environment. I can't even answer my telephone if I am in the middle of trying to eat :-( All I can recommend is eating about 5 bites of soft food every two hours. It works for me. Good Luck, (Thunder Bay, Ontario) Re: Need some support > , > > I think that many, many of us in the group have had the same thing > happen. Guest guest
-- I see you've tried levsin and nitro and all the "mechanical" things (eating/drinking/etc). There are a few more medicines that might bring you relief. First is Nifedipine (procardia, etc.) -- it's a calcium channel blocker. However, its action is similar to the nitro, so you may not have luck with it. The second is a "newer" way of looking at the NCCPs. There's a theory that the pain doesn't actually originate in the chest/esophagus, but rather in the BRAIN. This is NOT to say that these pains are "all in our head"... they are DEFINITELY real! However, ANY sensation in ANY part of our body is actually "interpreted" by the brain. If you put your thumb in a flame, the nerves in the thumb send a signal to the brain, and the brain interprets those signals to mean "I feel burning pain in my thumb". If you put your foot in a bucket of icewater, your brain "tells you" that your foot feels cold. Your thumb and your foot aren't really the ones "feeling" hot or cold, they're just sending signals to your brain and your brain then tells you what you are feeling. Well, as in any system of communciation, there are times when there is a breakdown of communications and signals get crossed. One good example of this phenomenon is "phantom limb pain" that is felt by an amputee. If someone's right leg is amputated above the knee, you'd think that they wouldn't have any "right foot sensations", right? The foot's not there, so it can't "feel" anything, right? But it's not unusual for that person to feel itching on their right toe, or "pins and needles" or hot or cold sensations in their foot, or even searing pain. Researchers aren't sure if the problem stems from damage to the nerves at the point of the amputation (the nerves that previously carried the messages from the foot to the brain that were cut), or if the problem stems from "confusion" in the brain itself (the brain doesn't understand why it's not getting the same old signals from the area of the right foot, so it just makes something up in its place). Considering that achalasia is caused by damaged esophageal nerves, it makes logical sense to me that those damaged nerves could either be sending "bad" signals to the brain, or else that they've stopped sending any signals at all which confuses the brain. I know that I'll sometimes get a pain starting right after a particularly hearty sneeze.... almost as if the brain is thinking, "Hmmm, I just felt *something* happen in the region of the chest.... the lungs and nose nerves told me it was a sneeze, but the esophagus nerves didn't chime in with their agreement of that assessment. What is going on here.... maybe it wasn't really a sneeze after all! Well, if it wasn't a sneeze, what WAS that sensation? Oh no, what if it was something harmful or dangerous? Maybe I'd better send out the Pain Response so that my human will fix whatever's wrong. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong, but there MUST be SOMETHING wrong, right? Why else am I not getting a response back from the esophagus nerves to tell me that it was just a sneeze? Yep, something must be REALLY wrong, so I'll send out a HUGE pain response, that's what I'll do!" And the next thing you know you're lying in the fetal position in the middle of the living room floor, trying to negotiate deals with God if he'll please just make it go away. So now the question is, what do we do about it???? Well, there's a lot of evidence that manipulating brain chemicals can help keep your brain from "jumping the shark" in this type of situation. The most-studied drugs right now include anti-convulsants (most of which have some unpleasant side effects) and anti-depressants. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE CLINICALLY DEPRESSED, nor does it mean you're a basket-case, a candidate for the loony bin, a whack-job, or any other label that people use for those who take antidepressants!!!! Sometimes you have to "experiement" a little to see exactly which type of anti-depressant works for your individual situation. In many cases, the dosage needed to prevent NCCPs is significantly lower than the dose that is normally prescribed to treat depression. (Because you're not taking them to treat depression, you're taking them to treat a confused-nerve problem in the brain!) Lower doses usually mean less chance of some of the side effects that are associated with some anti-depressants. Examples of drugs to try include Paxil, Wellbutrin, Nortryptaline, Amitryptaline, etc. There are literally dozens of different formulations of anti-depressants. (I've taken a drug on and off over the past few years that affected serotonin, even though it isn't an anti-depressant, and any time I've been taking this drug I have not gotten NCCPs!) There's something about the manipulation of serotonin that seems to "fix" this in many people. It does involve taking a pill every day, and it does take a couple of weeks for the levels to "build up" to a maintenance level in the body for it to have a preventative effect. It may take a bit of trial and error to figure out if a particular drug is going to work in your body. But if your choices are to suffer through NCCPs or to take a little pill every morning, I would have to opt for the little pill!!!! I hope this helps -- if you need some backup documentation to show to your doctor, let me know and I can dig it up. (Or do a web search on terms like "phantom pain antidepressant" and you'll find several studies links.) Debbi in Michigan Hi allIt's been a while since I've posted, but I need some help from youall. Quick history - diagnosed in 1992, lap heller's myotomy in 1998,with a partial wrap. Things have been going good except the awfulspasms and nccp that knock me out for a day or two and leave mevomiting. I've tried levsin and nitrotabs, neither work well at all.I've been discussing with my dr that it might be gallbladder problemsbecause some of the symptoms are very similar between that and spasms. He gave me a painkiller to take during the spasm (which did nothingfor me), and a standing order for bloodwork and an ultrasound for mygallbladder. Last week, I had a really bad bout with the "spasm" orwhatever it is, stayed home from work, and went in and had thebloodwork and the ultrasound. I got the results back last night and everything was all clear.Evidently, there's nothing wrong with my gallbladder. I have an appt.with my dr. in a week to discuss what's next but I know what he'sgoing to say. Nothing's next. It's odd to say I'm devastated thatnothing's wrong, but I'd so rather KNOW what the heck is happening tome and be able to fix it, than to face the rest of my life with thisdibilitating pain every few weeks. My husband is trying to be supportive, saying that he's sure they'llfind some kind of fix for this, but he doesn't understand that no oneis researching this problem for us. This is it. There is no "nexttreatment option".I just can't handle this pain anymore. there are no solutions. Yes I've tried glugging water (room temp and ice cold) I've triedtostitos, triscuits, heat packs, ice packs, running, laying down, bearing down. Watching what I eat, changing my eating habits and whatkind of food I eat to eating whatever. Nothing works. I'm at my witsend and need some sane advice from those of you who know where I'm atand how I feel.I'd appreciate any suggestions or words of encouragement. I'm usuallyvery optimistic and positive but I think I've hit my bottom with this one. Thanks all in Michigan

Guest guest
sorry you are still having those awful spasms - sorry I can't add any advice as I am one of the lucky ones. Debbi's post puts forward a very interesting and possible answer. When you ask the doctor for an antidepressant please tell him if you have high blood pressure because some anti-depressants can interfere with the anti-hypertensive medication as I have just found out to my cost with 25mg of amitryptaline. Hope you get some help soon Hugs Joan Need some support > Hi all > It's been a while since I've posted, but I need some help from you > all. Guest guest
Hi , Sorry to hear about you're painful spams, ther're horrible! I have a similar problem. Although I haven't had a myotomy, my achalasia symptoms are very similar to a gallbladder attack: pain in my upper right quadrant that radiates through my chest and it usually occurs after eating greasy fatty foods. My spasms begin in my upper right quadrent of my stomach and it almost seems as if thats where the most intense pain is. I've had an ultrasounds and theres no stones. So I mentioned this to my GI dr and he told me that its' because the LES is in the same vacinity as the diaphram. Because there's contraction of the LES this irritates the diaphram that can cause spasms to occur. So, if these symptoms sound like yours, what I have done is eliminated all...ALL.... greasy, fatty, deep fried foods. I can't tell you how much this has helped my achalasia!!! (I swear this is why I've lost weight, not because I eat less) And when my spasms do occur I relive it with chugging ICE COLD water when I have a hint of it beginining. Sorry it's not much to offer, just figured I could try to help. Maybe you should ask your dr. if it's time for a barium to see if your LES my need dialtion?? Only a suggestion. And I know it's hard not to, but try not to anticipate that a spasm is going to occur, because this only tenses your muscles and your LES is a muscle. I know when I'm frustrated, it makes me go into spasms. Then of course you could try progressive relaxation, guided imagery, yoga, deep breathing... all those alternative methods of pain control. Like others have mentioned too, antidepressents are used to treat anxiety. This may help too. I hope everything works out for you and you find a way to control your pain! in Michigan
