My guess would be that you are on a hyper swing of your hashi's. Did you test your antibodies along with your TSH?

need some support

Hi all,

I follow the posts but haven't posted for a long time. I have hashimoto's but was never really considered "hypo" so I never took thyroid hormone. Started Iodoral last August and have taken it everyday since.

My TSH before Iodoral was always .68 or so and I just got a TSH test back showing "hyperthyroidism". It explains how I've been feeling lately, extremely nervous, irritable, heart skipping beats, losing weight, mood swings, crying, angry, and very weak and tired esp. weak muscles.

Is it possible that Iodoral caused me to become hyperthyroid? If not, is it likely that I'm having a hyper phase of hashimoto's that will normalize?

What should I do from here?

Thanks,

antibodies were tested about 6 weeks ago. both antiglobulin and TPO's were elevated but not really high.

Hmmmm....Iodine usually brings them down. I am guessing that you are having an attack of hashis.

ever had testing for thyroid receptor antibodies? some hashi's folks

have them (about 40% i think)...and i have wondered if it is these

antibodies that cause a problem with iodine causing hyper or hypo in

those with autoimmune thyroid disease.

Even (some of) the iodine doctors seem to be cautious when having someone with Hashi's supplement with iodine because the condition can be unpredictable. An eye must be kept on the antibodies at all times and supplements like selenium, Vit. B-12 and betaine which help toreduce them are usually advised. You don't mention how many Iodoral tabs you started out with and how many you were taking recently nor which supplements you have been taking, so other than stopping the iodine at least for now, it's hard to suggest anything else at this point. Myself, even though I was never "officially" diagnosed as having Hashi's I have always suspected that I do, so I approached iodine supplementation with caution (and even so I've had my problems...). In April I began to try to increase my intake of Lugol's from 2-3 drops/week to one daily and I immediately had what appeared to be a severe hyper reaction (palpitations, chest pressure, loose bowels,

anxiety, shakiness, etc.).I took copper, magnesium and potassium chloride several times a day and finally after 5 days my heart went back to normal. I felt very confused and nearly quit taking iodine right then but I thought it was too important to give up so I kept reading and concluded that in my case all the above may have been a detox reaction. So, after resting for those 5 days, I restarted very slowly and at the merest heart flutter I did Celtic Salt "loadings" and rubbed some magnesium chloride on my skin and very soon I was able to continue to increase my intake every week. Then, recently I realized that I'd lost my initial modest benefits and was feeling more and more fatigued each day. I think it was providential that I read at the CureZone Iodine forum a

thread about how to measure Lugol's because I found out that instead of 37.5 mg. I was really taking 75 mg. [turns out that when dispensing drops of Lugol's horizontally instead of vertically one gets 12.5 mg. instead of 6.25] and I'd really intended at most to go up to 50 mg., then stay there for a while and start scaling back down to a small "maintenance" amount.I was confused again because I'd been attributing my excessive fatigue and malaise to a cold virus I'd gotten weeks earlier but that itself had puzzled me because it was the 2nd cold I got in less than 3 months and I had not had one single cold in at least the previous 3 years. I cut back to 50 mg. but by then I realized I'd been having difficulty falling asleep because my heartbeat was too fast. Since neither the salt, potassium or mg. chloride were really helping I had to conclude it was the iodine. Then last night I read the post of another lady who had a (different) negative

reaction and decided to stop the iodine so I knew I should really do the same.My guess at this point is that all that iodine was pushing my body beyond its limits, and since I was also doing a parasite cleanse last month, the resulting toxic load became too much for my body to handle and this in turn stressed my already weak adrenals. So I'm going to focus on lightening the load, my emphasis is going to be on Vit. E and just a few liver and adrenal supporting supplements and perhaps you should consider doing the same. It goes without saying that if you started taking the Iodoral under the care of a health practitioner you should go back for a consult.Best wishes,Raquel

Antibody numbers may be less of a factor than how the body feels

and reacts. I don't want to discourage anyone from doing

antibody testing though.

High selenium, high Vit B12, and betaine (TMG, not

hydrochloric acid) are popular for this and that

in nutritional circles today, but

I am one who is aggravated by all of them and do better with

selenium in foods rather than higher dose supplements,

modest amounts of B12 such as in a B-50 complex,

and no TMG. High selenium (which helps to foster T3 conversion)

tends to inflame my thyroid and cause hyper symptoms,

high Vit B12 is seems just generally unsuitable

and weakening for me, and TMG consistently muscle tests weak

at the HFS so I have just skipped it. Everyone is different.

Cindi,

what is this test called? It is not the usual TPO or TgAb? And what

does the test tell us that is helpful?

yes - different from the usual antibodies tested in Hashi's....

I'm still trying to sort it all out myself...but Elaine 's

article on " understanding TSH receptor antibodies " probably says it

much better than I can:

http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/graves_disease/118251

my thoughts on why it might be important...if we have TSH receptor

blocking antibodies, TSH can be falsely low (is this why so many

hashi's folks have such normal looking TSHs?)...if we have TSH

stimulating antibodies (also called TSI), would be be more prone to

hyperthyroidism from iodine for example.

Yes, you are very right, we're all different.

The only time my a/b were measured it only showed I was borderline

high but since then I'm sure they have gone up and down.

I have no way of knowing if you already know this so I have to mention

it. There is a strong relationship between Hashimoto's and gluten and

casein intolerance, (which is my case) so this is something else to

consider in case you haven't explored that possibility yet.

What you wrote immediately reminded me of some things I read recently

about methylation. If you are an over-methylator you wouldn't do well

on some of the supplements you mentioned because they are methyl

donors and, therefore, would increase methylation which you wouldn't

need. Please visit this page and read the info for more details:

http://www.enzymestuff.com/methylation.htm

Perhaps this article can start you on a different route of personal

research to find out which other supplements could be better for you.

The lectins in whole wheat, wheat germ are also implicated

in leaky gut and autoimmune disease. Type O blood is especially

susceptible.

I have a Links folder* on Methylation, with some of my comments

on contemporary methylation approaches.

See also my extensive Links* on IODINE, Selenium, and Thyroid:

Some people go hyper with too high iodine and/or high selenium etc,

and they may get insulin resistance or other glycemic problems

in conjunction with being hyperT or thyrotoxic.)

Carol,Sorry, I confused you with because that's who I originally addressed my post to so disregard what I said about methylation since you probably know about that more than I do.Anyway, you mentioned you have some links but you didn't specify where. I imagined it must be in your group but the info seems to be for members only and I'm not planning to join any more groups right now.Raquel

For 6 months I took 2 tablets a day and for the last 6 months I've taken one.

I also have a multinodular goiter that's been there for the last 3 years but wasn't causing any problems. I have a feeling that the nodules are now overactive and overproducing thyroid hormone and causing the hyperthyroidism. I am a person with copper toxicity who is overmethylated and thus, I am VERY sensitive to drugs and have lots of adverse reactions. I'd be afraid of the antithyroid drugs. I think if this doesn't resolve (with natural stuff I'm going to try) that I would opt instead for the Radioactive iodine therapy to wipe out the nodules even if I might become hypo.

I also was on lithium for 3 years, and wonder if that contributed, but I've been off that for 2 years. My concern about how lithium could have affected my thyroid function plus ovarian cysts and fibroids is what prompted me to take Iodoral in the first place. Well, at least it got rid of my cysts and one of the fibroids and shrunk the other two, but I'd rather have those than HyperT which is dangerous and I feel like a total basketcase now and can barely function.

Hello Bee and others,

I am at about the 2-year stage of following this program. Candidiasis is no

longer a problem for me and I have seen improvement in some other areas.

I am, however, having problems that seem major to me and I am waivering in my

commitment to this program. The first big problem was that I have developed a

head tremor that occurs when I use my arms. I wrote about that earlier.

The next problem is pain and limited mobility in my right shoulder. I wrote

about this earlier as well. I believe I may have sustained an injury to my

shoulder last summer/fall while struggling with a heavy wheelbarrow. However,

the problem has become much worse and I have suffered (and am suffering) a lot

of pain and even greater limitation in using my arm.

And then last week I noticed that at times I now have a hand tremor when I am

using that same right arm.

I need some advice and encouragement to avoid going completely off track here.

Thanks in advance for your help,

H.
