Guest guest
Hepatitis C is treated with a drug called peginterferon, usually in combination with the drug ribavirin. You may need surgery if you have hepatitis C for many years. Over time, hepatitis C can cause your liver to stop working. it can lead to liver cancer, liver failure or cirrhosis — irreversible and potentially fatal scarring of the liver. If that happens, you will need a new liver. The surgery is called a liver transplant. It involves taking out the old, damaged liver and putting in a new, healthy one from a donor. Medication is currently available for treatment of chronic hepatitis C. The most effective medication is the combination of peginterferon and ribavirin. Treatment with this medication is successful in eradicating HCV in about half of infected patients. This is called a sustained virologic response (SVR). Current studies suggest that HCV will probably never return in patients with a sustained virologic response unless they are once again exposed to this virus. No vaccine currently exists to prevent infection in an individual that is exposed to HCV. Patients who achieve a SVR following treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin have an improvement in the degree of liver injury with loss of fibrosis and a return of the liver towards normal. This is called histologic improvement. Histologic improvement has also been reported to occur in some patients who did not achieve a sustained virologic response following treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin. > From: fiar@... <fiar@...> > Subject: Blood work > > Date: Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 11:47 AM > Twigs and Bark! Guest guest
All Mark says is quite true. There are many issues to consider, of course. I've had hep C for probably nearly 30 years...my liver is fine. But also, I'm not contending with HIV. I have genotype 1 - not so responsive to the potentially onerous peg- interferon/ribavirin therapy. There is no real reason for ME to use it--but there are many other situations where it may be advisable. Certainly, for example, if I had genotype 2 or 3, I'd give it a shot (...er....) If I was African American with Genotype 1--I'd think twice. SVR is much less in that population. Other treatments are desperately needed and there seem to be quite a few in the pipeline. Can one wait? Again, it depends on a lot of issues. Advancing disease? Maybe time to give it a shot. Depends on what ARVs one is using too--some don't mix well with ribavirin. I shared my story to say there are other things one can do. Some of these may also work WITH treatment. I've got nothing against drugs. If a good protease inhibitor comes out, maybe with a helicase inhibitor? I'll give it a try! Depends. How can we offset side effects? How can we help people that either don't want to risk the onerous side effects or for whom therapy has failed? I'm stating out loud and proud that there are other things to do aside from just awaiting cirrhosis or liver cancer! And guess what? No matter what we do, we all still wind up dead. So part of it is enjoying life. And part of it is also saying to the extent these things CAN help, they should be covered, available and not cost an arm and a leg. While supplements are cheaper than genocidally overpriced drugs, they're still expensive. We should have a universal health care system. Period. Well...these things are all related, and thanks, Mark, for the good primer on the basis. M.
Guest guest
Interesting that the discussion of blood work came up today. I just had mine taken. Now that I'm starting to loose a little weight, I wanted to check it out, since last year it wasn't good (it wasn't horrible either thank God). Hopefully, next year it will be even better. May God give us all strength to get through this and find ways to make improvement in our lives. Guest guest
The only problem I have with my blood last time it was taken is that my cholesterol was 202 and my iron was pretty low. I have problems with absorption because I gastric bypass in 2001. I would advise nobody to have that done and don't let anyone you know have it done. Even with the weight loss, the malabsorption causes a LOT of problems. I have had to have iron infusions and blood transfusions. SCARY! In a message dated 8/5/2008 3:15:23 P.M. Guest guest
Kathy, You poor thing! I know how painful and frustrating that is. I was in the hospital 5 times last year, lengthy stays each time, and it destroyed my veins. I never had a problem before having blood drawn or an IV started. I now have what they call hospital veins. Every 3 days they had to change the IV, I would cringe. Then they would have to draw my blood several times a day. They usually, but not always, can get my blood in the crease of the elbow now that's it's been a while since I was in the hospital. If I go in for a nerve block, if the nurse can't start the IV after 2 tries, the Dr starts it. Sometimes the Dr. can't get it on the first try. I also worry if I have to go into the hospital. I live in NY so unfortunately I don't know anywhere for you to go for blood. Sorry. Good Luck. You are so right. It isn't any fun being a pin cushion LOL. Sue C Re: Re: Blood work HEY GANG... Guest guest
Besides a hot towel, I use the hot hand warmers and foot warmers that the deer hunters use during the winter months. When they go on clearance is when I stock up b/c my veins roll as well. Another thing that helps is I made a homemade bean bag of beans and heated it up for about 5 minutes and put it on my arm to draw the veins to the top of the skin. One can use pinto beans, rice or corn in the bag. Guest guest
Hi Nick Sheila has suggested that I send you my results so that you can help me decide whether I am on the right dosage etc. However, I must say that when I wrote yesterday I was not at all well but today there is quite an improvement and so I am wondering whether I just need to wait and see what evolves. My bloods were all normal except for Ferritin which was slightly raised. This was the case three years ago when I had tests in Belgium. The thyroid results after starting NT are: TSH -0.1 T4 17.1(11.5-22.7) Free T3 8.5(3.5-6.5) My GP was concerned at these levels but I assured her I was happy with these. I now take 4NX plus 20/25HC plus 3gns NT. I would add that my basal temp is still only 97 but better than it was. Yesterday it was only 96.2 and at night about the same. My pulse has risen from 50 to between 57 and 60 Your comments will be appreciated.

There are 3 common causes plus some uncommon ones 1 Adrenal issues. Have your daily average temperatures as per Dr Rind timings stabilised?? 2 Iron, Ferritin is OK, have you had any other parameters checked like % saturation?? 3 Reverse T3, my guess is this is most likely The protocol for clearing reverse T3 is also good for dealing with other causes of resistance which is to go onto T3 only. Guest guest
Hi Audrey, I was hoping that if Nick saw your last thyroid results, he might be able to tell whether you could be suffering with a reverse T3 problem. You are probably still not taking enough adrenal support with your last Genova Results at rock bottom Audrey, any possibility that you could try an increase to see if this would help. Your temperatures should start to rise and you would feel much better.
