Subject: coffee enema

NOTE: It is a good idea to start with a warm water enema first, to remove the

wastes present and ready to be eliminated. Then follow with the coffee enema for full benefit.

BASIC DIRECTIONS

(1) Boil 1 quart/1 liter water, with 3 rounded tablespoons of freshly ground coffee in non-metal pan (I use glass)over med heat. Use only filtered, purified or distilled water, not tap water. Do not use a coffee maker. Use only organically grown, non-decaffeinated coffee beans. Store coffee

beans in the freezer to retain freshness. (2) Allow coffee to boil for 5-15 min, to evaporate the oils.

(3) Let cool to body temp.

(4) Strain, using a fine-mesh stainless steel tea strainer(it looks like screen

wire) to strain out the grounds, leaving the "silt". Since many of the beneficial elements for detoxification in the coffee are fiber-bound, it

isn't a good idea to use a paper strainer, or even a cloth, unless it's got

a fairly coarse weave.

(5) Filtered water may be added back to make one full quart. Using an enema bag,

insert coffee mixture into rectum. Lie on your right side for 15 min

with knees toward your chest, breathing deeply. (6) Evacuate bowels.

Additional comments on the coffee enema:

"Gerson knew that the coffee enema dilated the bile ducts and caused a flushing

of toxic bile from the liver. (Drinking coffee constricts the bile ducts). He

also knew that this was the most effective method for detoxification. Since Gerson's time

various active ingredients in coffee have been identified and most interestingly, the palmitates present in coffee increase the binding of toxic elements by the bile 7-fold and this enzyme-enhancing ability in the

liver and small intestine does not allow reabsorption of the toxic bile. Most

cholerectic herbs do not ensure this complete removal of toxins but only an increase in bile flow.

In order to assist detoxification I often recommend the coffee enema. They

guard against a toxic build-up that can make you feel so dreadful and in this way help the body to heal. It is important to remember that the coffee enemas go hand-in-hand with the juices: no enemas - no juices and no juices - no enemas. The juices will remove toxicity from the tissues and the coffee enema ensures its removal to the outside. If used without the juices they will ultimately have a depleting effect on nutrients. The rule of thumb is - 3

juices (3 x 250mls) per coffee enema. If you increase the juices then you can

safely increase the enemas."

From "Detoxing and the Flagging Liver(part 2 of 3)by

(From Gerson Healing Newsletter Vol. 15, No. 3, May-June, 2000) http://www.gerson.org/healing/articles/nl_detoxingliver.htm

QUESTION: How does coffee taken orally differ from taking it as a rectal enema?

ANSWER: Coffee taken by mouth is a vasoconstrictor causing capillary and bile

duct constriction. Drinking coffee is damaging to the stomach due to

the aromatic fatty acids (which are not absorbed through the colon since the aromatics are boiled off in the "coffee enema recipe"

preparation). Drinking coffee is an artificial stimulant and appetite

suppressant as well as creating a more acidic environment in the body

which is counter productive to healing.

When taking the coffee enema, the caffeine and other components act to

relax and open the bile ducts releasing toxins (as much as seven times

the normal rate) from the liver. The glutathione-S transferase

system is activated as well to enhance the functions of the immune

system.

Simply put, one is health giving and on is not. Choose the "coffee

break" that is cleansing and supportive. Thousands of people have

found this to be true. The coffee enema is also an excellent method

for pain relief that is caused by toxic build up in the liver and colon.

Remember, Dr. Gerson first developed his Therapy to cure his migraine

headaches.

However, a word of caution: any more than one coffee enema a day should be taken with sufficient juices and supplements to maintain a

healthy balance in the body. Dr. Gerson spent many years developing a safe and effective therapy that requires some attention and study by the

users. Still have questions? Check out the Common Questions section of the

The coffee enema detoxifies the liver as well as cleans the colon. Coffee stimulates the liver to make more bile. Bile from the gallbladder draws out environmental and metabolic toxins as well as the very irritating toxins from Candida albicans and other parasite-like organisms. The colon is the organ responsible for carrying away these toxins. In addition coffee enemas stimulate the liver to produce enzymes that clean the blood. Coffee enemas also assist the colon to develop better function. In these ways coffee enemas are an essential resource in a colon cleansing program.

The Coffee Enema for Liver Detoxification

Based upon Dr. Gerson's work.

More information iin his book: A Cancer Therapy, Results in Fifty

Cases

The coffee enema has been used for many years to detoxify the

liver. It is a low-volume enema that remains only in the sigmoid

colon. There is a duct between the sigmoid colon and the liver called

the entero-hepatic circulation system. When the stool reaches this

point, most nutrients have been absorbed and the stool contains many

toxins, which are sent to the liver for detoxification. Have you ever

felt sick just before having a bowel movement, when stool material

has just moved into the rectum for elimination? As soon as the

material is evacuated, you no longer feel sick. This is due of the

toxic quality of the material and the enterohepatic circulation

coming into play.

The caffeine that is absorbed into the entero-hepatic system

causes the liver ducts, including the bile ducts, to empty into the

sigmoid colon and be eliminated. Releasing the toxins in the liver

ducts, makes room for toxins from the body to enter the liver for

detoxification. The alkaloids in the caffeine stimulate the

production of glutathione-S-transferase, which is an enzyme that

facilitates the liver detoxification pathways. So in other words, a

coffee enema speeds up the detoxification process and minimizes the

backlog of yet to be detoxified substances. Coffee enemas will not

waste minerals and electrolytes because they have already been

absorbed in the previous sections of the intestines. The coffee enema

is safe even for people who are sensitive to caffeine because the

coffee remains in the sigmoid colon, where it will not be absorbed,

provided the proper amount is used and the enema bag is not place too

high.

Preparing the Coffee Enema

Add 3 heaping tablespoons of ground coffee (organically grown coffee

is absolutely essential*) to 1 quart of water (preferably distilled).

Let it boil lightly for 3 minutes, then simmer for a total of 20

minutes. Keep lid on.

Strain thru a wire mesh strainer (not a paper filter)

Use when it is body temperature.

Procedure

Next, carry your pan or pot and lay an old towel on the floor of your

bathroom. Pour the coffee from the pan into the enema bucket without

getting the coffee grounds in the cup. You may prefer to use an

intermediate container with a pour spout when going from the pan to

the enema bucket. Put your enema bag in the sink with the catheter

clamped closed. Pour the coffee into the enema bag. Loosen the clamp

to allow the coffee to run out to the end of the catheter tip and

reclamp the bag when all the air has been removed from the enema

tubing. Hang the enema bag at least two feet above the floor (but

not too high).

Lie down on your right side, with both legs drawn close to the

abdomen. Breathe deeply, in order to suck in the greatest amount of

fluid into the necessary parts of the colon. It also helps to let all

of the air out of the lungs and suck the gut in and out while in this

position.

If you need lubrication for insertion, use food grade vegetable oil

such as olive oil. Gently insert the tube into the rectum a few

inches and then release the clamp and let the first 1/2 of the quart

(I cup; 2 cups maximum) of coffee flow in. Clamp the tubing off as

soon as there is the slightest amount of discomfort or fullness. Do

not change positions or use an incline board to cause the enema to

enter further into the colon; this defeats the purpose of this type

of enema.

The fluid should be retained for 12 to 15 minutes. It helps to have a

clock or watch in view, and relaxing reading material. Dr. Gerson

found that all the caffeine is absorbed from the fluid within 12

minutes.

Sometimes there will be an immediate urgency to get rid of it and

that is fine. It helps to clean the stool out of the colon so that

next time around you can hold more of the enema longer. Never force

yourself to retain it if you feel that you can't. When you have

clamped the tubing, remove the catheter tip and void when you have

to. It is best to hold it for at least 12 minutes each time. After

you have emptied the bowel, proceed with the remaining 1/2 quart and

likewise hold that for at least 12 minutes, if able, then void.

The goal is to have two enemas, not exceeding 1/2 a quart (2 cups)

each, that you are able to hold for 12 to 15 minutes each. Usually 2

or 3 times will use up all of the enema, but that is not your goal.

Being able to hold it for 12 to 15 minutes is. When you have finished

your session, rinse out the bag and hang it up to dry. Periodically

run boiling water, peroxide, or other comparable antimicrobial agent

through the empty bag to discourage mold growth when not in use.

If you feel wired or hyper, or have palpitations or irregular

heartbeats after a coffee enema, you should reduce the amount of

coffee, usually by half for a few days or weeks. Or consider that you

really need organic coffee. Be sure the source of your water is good

clean chemical-free spring, well, or filtered water.

Sometimes you will hear or feel a squirting out and emptying of the

gallbladder. This occurs under the right rib cage, or sometimes more

closely to the mid line. If after a week of daily enemas you have

never felt or heard the gall bladder release, You should consider

making the coffee stronger, going up in 1/2 Tablespoon increments per

quart, not exceeding 2 Tablespoon per cup. Alternately, you may need

a slightly larger volume, such as 3 cups at a time. Sometimes, 3

enemas (2 cups or less each) rather than two at a session are more

beneficial for some.

Always discontinue the enemas if there is any adverse reaction

whatsoever, and discuss it with the doctor at your next appointment.

If you find the enema helpful, do not use it more than once per day

for any extended period without medical supervision. Use it as

necessary, perhaps several days in a row, but more commonly a few

times a week.

Mostly great information. But I think that the usual way to do it is

to lie on the left side, because the descending colon comes down the

left side of the abdomen. Also, Dr. recommends a tablespoon

of molasses to make retention easier. I've been doing these twice a

day for over two years and really like the way they make me feel.

I’ve done this (1 tbsp. organic

blackstrap molasses in a coffee enema). It helped a lot with retention problems

and produced no unpleasant after effects. It was talked about some time back on

Lymestrategies.

molasses in the colon??? Wow, I'm

going to have to think about putting all that sugar in my ........

Never heard that before.....

do you think it would help with iron levels?

It seems to me that having all that sugar in the

colon could promote yeast

I don’t know. I would think that simple

sugars would be absorbed, along with minerals perhaps (though I wouldn’t

think there would be much iron in 1 tablespoon). I’m thinking that

anything needing digesting to be absorbed would just sit there and be

eliminated. A coffee enema isn’t supposed to go much past the sigmoid

colon -- so not deep. I don’t know if there’s much bacteria sitting

around “processing” stuff that far down in the colon (not sure

about that), so maybe whatever is left unabsorbed is just eliminated.

Once or twice I did a CE with molasses and

was able to retain for 15 minutes – no problem. As a matter of fact, the

whole amount of liquid (around a quart) was absorbed. After the 15 or so

minutes nothing came out – not until much later and not watery. Very

strange but didn’t seem to cause any problem. Maybe I was dehydrated

though I generally drink plenty of water. It remains a mystery and hasn’t

happened since (and I haven’t done many CEs lately). (Note: I always do a

plain water enema first. . .)

I don’t have a particularly big

problem with candida, and molasses in the enema didn’t seem to cause a

problem. One more thought – 1 tablespoon probably doesn’t represent

all that much sugar anyway. . .

Molasses is the good stuff that is left behind when refined sugar is

made. It contains all the vitamins and minerals that were in the

original cane - and that are NOT in the refined sugar. I know it's

high in potassium - and it doesn't taste particularly sweet, but

that's all I really know. Also, as someone posted earlier, it is so

far down in the colon that there is likely not a lot of absorption

going on. In addition to using it in enemas, Dr. recommends

taking a tablespoonful by mouth each week. And I know that " in the

old days " , it was considered to be a tonic.
