The amount of wormer in that sort of product is much more than required to safely and effectively worm a dog. That beats up our dogs' and cats' immune systems which leads to dramactically shortened life spans and high vet bills and much heart-ache at the end of their life to treat the awful consequences -- cancer, liver disease, diabetes, kidney failure, and FIP and FLV in the cats. The best thing is to keep ALL the family members in good shape with strong immune systems through excellent fresh food, adequate sleep, exercise, fresh air and sunlight. As we on the forum know, once organs start rebelling its too late for a simple approach and we need to go to more heavy duty approach. BUT there are levels of heavy duty -- with allopathic drugs and surgery as the court of last resort, not first resort. We are currently dealing with dog roundworms in my little Beagle, who suffered malnuitrition for much of her life before finding her way to us. She was given one dose of a " gentle " chemical wormer (given to puppies and pregnant dogs) and I can tell you it knocked her for a loop and this was the GOOD one and given based on her exact body weight, etc. Everyone else in the household is taking 6 weeks of homeopathic dewormer tincture as a way to chase any invaders or opportunistic eggs away. We have a program of throughly cleaning the house -- all dog beds and bedding washed twice a week, all rugs vaccumed 5 times a week, etc for the 6 week process. Everyone is scrubbing carefully after petting any of the dogs and before meals and keeping their hands awy from their face. Yes, this is a lot of trouble, BUT its a fairly gentle but effective way to treat the problem without resorting to overkill or blowing out already over-strained immune systems. I agree with Vince, an occasional parasite cleanse is a good thing even in a household that only includes a goldfish. My two cents and I thought I would save Will the trouble of typing the basics when he wades into this discussion.
