Guest guest
Joyce, I'm not a doctor, but what about the rest of your diet. Were you eating out a lot on that New Years weekend? Had you been eating a lot of fatty food? I think if you're passing blood, that's pretty serious. Date: Fri, 3 Jun 2005 14:31:11 -0400 From: " JoyceB " <crwriter@...> Subject: More on Flax seed Well -- it's been a long haul but I've finally found out what was causing my mid-upper ab pain. When I first started experiencing my constant right-sided pain in November 2003, (had had it sporadically and to a much lesser degree for a few years before that time) I drastically changed my diet. I faithfully consumed whole wheat products and added ground flax to my morning cereal. About 5 weeks after changing my diet, I started with the mid-upper ab pain. Started off as a burning pain and graduated (over the course of months) to excruciating pain driving me to the emergency room this past New Years weekend. When I had my second colonoscopy this past January, I blew out what looked like grainy black/green bile just hours after the procedure. For the next few weeks I was in excruciating pain in my right side. My right side felt bruised to the touch. I think my gall bladder blew out and healed by itself. I was lucky. But my doctors were so used to hearing me scream about pain they did nothing. Geesh. Since that my right-side pain is GONE. Hallelujah. I never quite got rid of the upper-ab pain. It gave me some respite, but suddenly a few weeks ago, I found myself doubled over again. Grrrrrrr... I started passing blood in my stool, but experienced no weight loss or slow-grade fever that I had lived with prior to my colonoscopy. So -- I had to admit what I was experiencing could be IBS-like symptoms. I still could not shake the feeling that my mid-upper ab pain was somehow connected to my right-sided pain. When it came down to it, the only thing I had changed when my right-sided pain became unbearable was my diet. I have discontinued whole-wheat products in the past few weeks and discontinued flax seed in the past week. I'll be darned if that hasn't done the trick. Go figure -- I thought I was doing the right thing. JoyceB --------------------------------- Discover Have fun online with music videos, cool games, IM & more. Check it out! Guest guest
Yep--it was serious and have been passing blood periodically since last August. Food allergies can damage the small bowel. But whatever was going on was not causing enough damage to show up on xrays. I was eating fats only through foodstuffs like flax and using olive oil for cooking. My diet was perfect -- or so I thought. It was the Flax that was causing the majority of my problem. I haven't felt this good in 1 1/2 years. Wheat bothers me, too, but not as much as Flax. All my symptoms are alleviated now. Going to have tests for food allergies done. I still don't understand why the doctors did not pick up on this. I was very clear on what I was eating. They never even suggested it; although, now my doctor tells me he had done one blood test for wheat allergy. Guest guest
Joyce...I am curious who/what /why gave you the idea the whole wheat would be a good thing too take with sensitive & / or Irritable bowel type problems...It don't matter much(imo) if the wheat is whole grain/organic/biodynamic/pure ...whatever you want too call it ..it still has the gluten (major RED light).. & it still has the basic wheat protein ....these are (or probably will soon become )..major problems for people with irritable bowel situation As for flax/linseed ..I personally believe this is a beneficial product for bowel problems ...but realize if you are using a major irritant (whole wheat )...whilst eating other normally beneficial /neutral foods ..you can become sensitive too these (normally ) beneficial products as well as the major offending foods ...If you get your colon into a major inflamed/sensitive situation and issues such as " Leaky Gut " & associated Candidias & related intruders appear .. & these can increase your guts potential too develop intolerances/allergies to more common foods. I would soak the linseed overnight too initiate germination enzymes & then grind into puree after the soak period to facilitate digestibility before consuming. I personally had many problems with wheat /rye & grains when younger due to antibiotic use (for diet induced acne of all things ..Very.dumb & very bad Doctor who prescribed). Eventually I found for me no grains diet is best(as a result partly at least of earlier damage I did) ..in fact no Starches diet period ..by no starches I mean ..basically no grains ..no potatoes/taro/yam/cassava/cooked legumes (I do have sprouted), etc . But whole wheat is diabolically bad for most people with Bowel issues ..if you have too eat grain ...try Millet , quinoa, ..or too a lesser extent ..rice .... & maybe even oats ...but I think you will find ..(particularly with your Bowel in the current situation you have described)...that grains would be best left out of your diet ..definitely for at least a period to give your intestine bowels a chance to heal & stabilize...bland ..low Carb foods , easy too digest would probably be best for a while ..maybe predominantely lots of cooked/steamed (low carb) vegetables ... & broths etc for a few days ., then add in high quality protien & fat foods ..just my 2 cents based on what I have found....note I am not a Doctor though ..so make up your own mind....fwiw 1 Date: Fri, 3 Jun 2005 14:31:11 -0400 From: " JoyceB " <crwriter@...> Subject: More on Flax seed Well -- it's been a long haul but I've finally found out what was causing my mid-upper ab pain. Guest guest
2 points I will add to below ...some people are sensitive to flax/psyllium..you may be one (usually self induced sensitivity due to poor preperation & /or overuse )when Gut is in an inflamed situation ... Second point..I find slippery elm has been benificial as well when I had a problem bowel situation ...fwiw ----- Original Message ----- From: O gallstones Sent: Sunday, June 05, 2005 11:05 AM Subject: More on Flax seed Joyce...I am curious who/what /why gave you the idea the whole wheat would be a good thing too take with sensitive & / or Irritable bowel type problems...It don't matter much(imo) if the wheat is whole grain/organic/biodynamic/pure ...whatever you want too call it ..it still has the gluten (major RED light).. I had the right-sided pain and low grade fever for over a year. Since my normal temperature is 97.6, it was impossible to get doctors to believe what was normal for them was low grade fever for me. (I even got sent home from school a few times for low fever when I was a kid *smirk*) It's a family trait -- my son, my mother and I all have low temps. I also experienced rapid weight loss during bad flare-ups. My pancreatic lipase was also climbing over the course of 3 years. The mid-upper-ab pain started about a month after my first run to the outpatient. (Nov 2003) I sat in a chair for about 5 weeks with that bout and got my affairs in order. I figured I would die. But -- the thing I did to try to help myself was change my diet. Whoops! I added lots of organic whole wheat, flax, and veggies and fruits. Because of the elevated pancreatic lipase and a slight abnormality on an ultrasound, I assumed the mid-upper pain it was a pancreatic issue. I assumed the right-sided pain was the direct cause of the mid-upper-ab pain. In Jan 2005, after I blew out what I think was bile from prep and subsequent colonoscopy, the low-grade fever and weight loss ceased. I put back all that weight without even trying. (darn) It appeared that whatever was happening in my right side corrected on its own. With the amount of right-sided pain I suffered after that procedure, I think I'm lucky it didn't go the other way. So I had to begin looking at the mid-upper ab pain in a different context. The connection was no longer direct. It had to be circumstantial. The connection was change in diet. I just recently followed through with another change in diet in the past 3 weeks. First wheat and then flax. Wheat made some difference and flax did the rest. No more flatulence, no more pain, no more malabsorbed stools. I think I may always have had a wheat sensitivity (not that I ever knew that could happen), but the flax really did a number on me. My gut was burning and the bloat and pain was awful. Although I had centralized pain in mid-upper ab, I had allover ab discomfort in general. If my bladder filled just a little, I had to go empty it to relieve the discomfort. Anyway--it's over now. (crossing fingers) But I have to tell you, I really miss my wheat germ and flax in my morning cereal. ( JoyceB
