I've read that flaxseed oil, at least in adults, is actually very unhealthy

(because of the specific type of fatty acids it contributes) and can increase

the risk of diabetes and heart disease (according to Dr. Eades). I

would avoid it and stick to CLO, which is proven.

Hi Trina,

My 45 lb. 8 yr old daughter takes both. She takes one gel cap in the AM.

They are large and are 1000 mg ea.

(She is under care of the Pfeiffer Treatment Center, Naperville IL, and these

are prescribed to her along with other supplements.)

Hi

<< Hi everyone,

Now, can someone clear this up for me? I want to give my son flaxseed oil,

but do I need to stop the cod liver oil that I have been giving for months,

or can you give both? How much flaxseed do you give for a 7 yr old?

Trina:

You may want to look into this. I believe according to a recent email I got

from the Secretin egroups, a Dr Kane indicates you need to make sure your

child has enough omega 6 and omega 3 levels in place before clo. Also he

notes that you should get the vitamin a level checked prior to begining clo.

We did not and gave our son the amount indicated based upon the child Dr

Megson reported in her report to congress. (4500 daily- he's 8 yrs and

weighs 100lbs) This was not the thing for him, as he began to visually stim

like crazy. Other bad side effects noted by this Dr Kane are seizures and

vitamin a toxicity. When our son developed splits in the corner of his

mouth (one of the signs of toxicity) we stopped.

Just be cautious.

Warren,

has been a patient of Dr. Goldberg for 3 years and has made tremendous

strides with him. Elyse Goldberg checked the list of Pfeiffer Supplements to

make sure it wouldn't conflict with Dr. G's protocol or be too much for her.

Dr. G, Pfeiffer, and the STARS aba program seem to be the winning combination

for ! Since you're so close, it might be worth it to visit the Pfeiffer

Clinic. You can share your concerns with them about not rocking your child's

boat while he's doing so well, they are very a caring and upstanding

organization.

Good Luck!

Dr. Kane has a Doctorate in science (can't remember specifically what field)

She is prescribing over the counter medications which is the only reason she

is not in jail for practicing medicine without a license. There really is a

reason people spend many years going to school to study the human body.

Taking advantage of desperate parents is a very lucrative business. Kathy R

Hi Grammy Patty!

I always love hearing from you, you bring so much warmth!

In answering your question, I found that by switching you find what works best

in the long run. In CHERAB's parent feedback reports -most found the Omega 3

and Omega 6 formulas like Efalex or ProEFA better than the pure Omega 3 formulas

like DHA Jr., Coromega, or Flax Seed oil. Overall most found the ProEFA to be

the best formula-but we don't know why yet.

After 2 years-and switching many times-we personally found the two best for our

children (and us) to be the Efalex and the ProEFA-but the we also found the best

so far is ProEFA for a few reasons.

Flax seed oil is typically used for those who prefer a vegetarian formula, or

for those who have children that are allergic to fish. Flax seed oil is from

what I understand not the same type of EFA-it's turned into a long chain fatty

acid in the body-doesn't go in that way like the fish oils. (for those who

know-you can call me and tell me what to write if I got this wrong)

Until the research we will not know for sure why the EFAs are working--or for

sure which are the best in every situation-we just, for the most part, love the

results.

Important is-if you do switch formula's -make sure that information is included

in the anecdotal case report by Dr. Duby, your granddaughter's developmental

pediatrician.

Could you use both? My friend who is a respected internal medicine

doctor out of Kimball Medical Center in Brick, NJ (some of you know her.

M.D.-you can find her work number in the archives) She recommends EFA

supplementation to " everyone " and she in addition recommends using flax seed oil

in preparing food. AND she practices what she preaches and has supplemented

both herself and her baby since birth. (she added to formula when she didn't

nurse-and now adds to her baby's food)

A good thing to remember is that there is sometimes to much of a good thing with

anything-to many carrots you'll turn orange-to much water you'll drown, to many

fast food french fries and...oh wait...no harm can come from to many french

fries-I'm just being silly. Only carrots-water and fish oil you have to be

careful with. Anyway, try to stay within the recommended dosages -unless your

doctor advises differently.

And for everyone- even if your doctor thinks of fish oil as the oil left over

after making fish and chips-please let them see your child before you supplement

them with EFAs. They don't have to explain where all the positive changes came

from a week or so later-they only have to write down their observations.

*****Attached please find another copy of the letter from Dr. Katz and Dr. Agin

and the anecdotal case report to download***** Again-any

questions/trouble/comments please email me at kiddietalk@... or leave a

message at 732-871-6013.

Hope your weekend is sunny and wonderful (it's supposed to rain here-but more

fun parties)

There's controversy about it. One of the reasons is that not everybody can

metabolize fatty acids in it to what the body uses. Check out

Having said that, I want to add that I know people who are sure that taking some

flax oil improves their health.

I think they are totally different things and have never compared them. Flax oil

is consumed for its Omega-3 EFA content, which is not supposed to be consumed in

large quantities. If I consumed flax oil, I wouldn't take more than, say, 1 tbsp

a day. But I eat a lot of butter.

This was a really good article. It has convinced me to not use the flaxseed

oil I have in the freezer. I also have some flax seed in the freezer that I

can now use knowing what I am doing!
