Gallstones Linked with Cardiovascular Disease

16 minutes ago Health - Reuters

By

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Patients with coronary heart disease

appear to be at increased risk of developing gallstones, Mexican

researchers report.

We have found a " strong association between both diseases, " Dr. Nahum

Mendez-, who led the study, told Reuters Health.

Obesity is a risk factor for gallstones and coronary heart disease.

To investigate the possible association between these two diseases,

the researchers, based at Medica Sur Clinic and Foundation in Mexico

City, studied 119 patients with gallstones visible on ultrasound and

354 controls without evidence of gallstones.

The prevalence of coronary heart disease was close to 16 percent in

subjects with gallstones, significantly higher than that of controls

at 4.5 percent, they report in the April issue of the American

Journal of Gastroenterology.

The most important risk factors for gallstones were having a body

mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, a waist circumference of more than

40 inches for men and more than 35 inches for women, high blood

pressure, and insulin resistance, a pre-diabetic condition.

In analyzes adjusting for age, gender and BMI, the risk of gallstones

in those with coronary heart disease remained almost three times

higher than those without.

Mendez- emphasized that weight loss has been recognized as a

key factor in the control and prevention of these conditions. " Even a

modest loss of 5 percent of initial body weight can reduce, eliminate

or prevent these disorders in a large proportion of overweight

patients, " he said.

That was interesting, though I'm not overweight. The article states

that people that are of normal weight would not be as susceptible to

getting gallstones as overweight people. Maybe because people who get

heart disease are usually overweight and don't make good food choices,

and obviously don't exercise enough or they wouldn't be overweight to

begin with!

By the way, B vitamins are good for resisting sweets. They seem to

help me, once I started taking them 3 times a day with every meal, such

as a good multi vitamin with high B vitamins in it.

Namaste,

Thanks ,

I don't take vitamins anymore.

I used to take a good b-complex when I was vegan along

with many other vitamins and minerals.

Personally I think it's hard on the liver.

Now I eat what I need.

I found that drinking great quality organic green tea

helps me tremendously with my sweet cravings.

My bf can eat an entire bag of uncle eddy's vegan

cookies, I used to eat it with him, now I have

absolutely no interest.

As far as another supplement that helps tremendously

with sugar cravings, chromium polynicotinate will

literally make you turn your nose up at sugar.

But Green tea is working great for me in that

department.
