Guest guest
Hello, I've heard of Dr. Mercola talking about kefir, how good it is for you. What's it all about? Thanks, Susie
Guest guest
Lori, Can you please explain more about what exactly it is? Like I said, I know Mercola is talking about it, but I haven't had the time to research it. For one thing, I'm expecting my first grandchild at any time now. I'm stressed! Thanks, Susie
Guest guest
I am interested, but I'd love to know the process in making kefir so that I know what I'm getting myself into. -----Original Message----- From: gallstones [mailto:gallstones ] On Behalf Of Neysa Dormish Sent: Monday, May 23, 2005 6:28 PM gallstones Subject: Kefir and making your own kefir > > Now if I can only figure out where to get kefir and > > these other goat > > products... I have kefir grains. I dont have any goat milk right now but the grains made WONDERFUL kefir that I use in cooking, smoothies and straight up. It is delicious. Should you be able to purchase goat milk locally, I would be happy to share grains for the cost of postage. Guest guest
Making the kefir is easy if you find someone within driving distance of your home. All I ever did was throw it in a glass jar and pour the goat's milk over it and let it brew overnight. If it's being shipped it will probably need to be reconstituted, but it's just a matter of doing the same thing for about a week. Then it starts to grow and you can share it with your friends and loved ones. I generally brew it room temperature. My grains have been in the fridge for awhile because I've been trying to cut everything out that could be causing me problems. I'm going to try it again. The thing about kefir is it's got multiple strains of probiotic activity whereas yogurt has a more limited amount. It's quite amazing and the end product is quite tangy and tasty. You could try going here. They've got a lot of information and links and they're really prolific too so I suggest either going with no e-mail and checking the website or doing it in digest form. I haven't been there for awhile but it's a nice group of people, just like here. Guest guest
Hi Susie, what Mercola is talking about is kefir starter. It's not real kefir and you have to keep purchasing it although it is convenient. We're talking about the actual grains (that look a little like cauliflower florets) that simply sit in your milk and produce this effervescent, tangy drink. All you have to do is swirl it around a little (I don't even do that and it still turns out fine). I'm not very good at explaining things. I think someone else mentioned Dom's website and that's a great resource. I understand about the grandchild thing. It'll all be good. Guest guest
Neysa, OK I am interested and I would like some, but is yours the kind that you keep repurchasing or the kind you continue to use?
