Guest guest
My 2 yr old has been newly diagnosed w/ JRA. Occasionally she is waking up in the middle of the night and is crying. She is partly still asleep and just crys and crys and will not communicate what it wrong. I'm thinking it's her legs but not sure. I ended up getting her on the counter in the kitchen and running warm water over her legs to help soothe them. After that she calmed down and I went ahead an gave her her dose of Naproxen a little earlier. She doesn't do this every night just maybe every 3 nights or so. I would love to know if anyone else's child is doing this too? Is there anything I can do to help her sleep? I feel so lost because she is just 2 and I can't really tell how bad she feels. BTW, I love this group! It's so helpful. Thanks, (daughter 2 1/2, JRA)
Guest guest
Hi , When was having this issue. I would massage her legs until she drifted back off to sleep. When this did not work I would put a Heating pad on her legs and made sure when she was sleeping to take it off her legs. Another thing was propping her legs up on a pillow. I have tried the Creams on her like Bengay and other brands but could not continue as these can cause the skin to burn and break out on JA kid's. When she got into this as something that was to continue. We made sure we did self help stuff. HOT bath before bed. Making sure the pillow was under her legs. Then if needed a Massage. Soft music playing to relax her is always good. You can get the Nature sounds on Disc. Heating pad is another thing which was a great help. Sometimes she would rather put her legs up on my hip and she would drift off to sleep. Robbin **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. Guest guest
My heart goes out to you and . My daughter was also just 2 when she first had symptoms of JRA (dx 4 mos. later). I remember those night all too well and it just breaks your heart. Have you tried a heating pad before bedtime or hot water bottle. We would wrap it around her knee about an hour before bedtime and during storytime. A lot of moms do the bath before bed and again in the morning too. Make sure she wears pajama bottoms and not just a nightie. It always helped and keeping the joints warm is key (weird since it seems like the opposite would be true). Also make sure you only give her the Naprosyn when she has food in her tummy since it can easily cause a stomach lining problems later (and intestinal) if not taken with food. Actually Isabelle had to stop that med after only a few months because of how sick she felt on it. She was throwing up and gagging constantly. She switched back to Ibuprofen 3 times per day, then we had a steroid injection which was FANTASTIC (no need for meds for a long time), then the JRA spread to both ankles and the other knee and we put her on Methotrexate. She also had a lot of PT and now has been in a " medicated remission " for almost a year now (knock on my head). Prayers to you and I so hope that you find something that works for at night. It is a huge weight on a mother's shoulders to feel so helpless when our child is in pain. Hugs, Hadley (Isabelle, 4 yrs. JRA) > > My 2 yr old has been newly diagnosed w/ JRA. Guest guest
Hi Joann, the Natropath has decided that we should cut out all sugar (as best possible) and put her on a high protein diet, except no lamb or beef..to much acid in those red meats. so you know chicken, tuna, salmon other fish..etc.. her immune system seem all out.. anyway we will do this for 6 to 8 weeks then go back and see him again wendy Joann Bullock <joann@...> wrote: , I look forward to hearing what your naturopath says. Guest guest
That sounds great. We have cut out all sugars (fructose, sucralose, etc) and artificial sweeteners but have also cut out a ton of other things, Corn being a biggie. If she likes it, you may want to try the Rice Dream line of milks. The vanilla is delicious and the Carob is my kiddos favorite. All my best with this. Guest guest
hello, My daughter is 19 months, and she will also cry at night, and wake up from the pain. You just keep doing what you feel is best for her. Maybe she would like the heating pads they sell. I think they are called therma-care. They last about 8 hrs. I have used they on . They stick on the skin, so you can put them almost anywhere. I also like how they don't hurt coming off. hope it helps Lani -- In , " rl_ahmgt " <5063@...> wrote: > > My 2 yr old has been newly diagnosed w/ JRA. Guest guest
my holistic person had me on no sugar.... can tey stevia cause that IS a plant unlike splenda which is really a bad bad chemical. He also had me on as much raw foods as possible... raw corn was fine.. anuthing that i could eat rw but discouraged nightshade stuff.. potatots... eggplants.... there are other things because these are believed to aggrivate inflammation. I do juicing as well.. carrots, beets, some other stuff and it helps keep my stomach in much better shape since im on narcotic pain medication. I cant afford to do all of the raw stuff .. wish i could but i do as much as I can and I do feel better for it. Its nothing of a miracle but it sure does make eating process food nasty!!! When I was on it really well, I couldnt even stand the taste of most candies! I think its naturally healthy for the body nd gut... at least for helping when it comes to being on so much medication.. it helps the body keep washing out chemicals/toxins. im not pushing anything.. just adding my expereince so far... Guest guest
I believe it is the sugary starch of it that supports yeast growth in the body. Also, it doesn't digest very well. Zoe loves corn on the cob a ton and is hating that she cannot have it right now. I personally miss my bowl of grits in the morning. My natural prozac started the day of well, now I am trying to find a new substitute. Guest guest
izie, I agree that stevia is great and natural, but if a naturopath/holistic practitioner is taking Dakota off all sugar, Stevia is comparable to sucrose, fructose, etc. All these are things that we are avoiding. Raw veggies are great, and try to go with fruits with an edible skin. They are lower in sugar also. Joann _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Issadora Sent: Friday, March 07, 2008 12:52 AM Subject: Re: Re: Waking up in the middle of night my holistic person had me on no sugar.... can tey stevia cause that IS a plant unlike splenda which is really a bad bad chemical.
